As far as the Tamora Pierce books go, the Alanna series isn’t the best written. If you’re interested in her works I would suggest The Protector of the Small quartet (1: First Test, 2: Page, 3: Squire, 4: Lady Knight). It’s better written and personally I connect better with the character.

I looked back at the Review "The Theif" and yeah, "The Theif Lord" by Corelia Funke is complately different as it's a standalone book and not a series of books. On your stream, I made the mistake in calling it YA, when it's actually closer to Middle Grade version of "Lies of Locke Lamora" (I glanced again at the book to remind myself what level of reading it was). I believe with a little bit of cursing than the typical Middle Grade because it's set in Venice, Italy and it focuses more on the group of Orphans being a found family as the main charaters are a brother and sister runaways. The "Theif Lord" actually is the leader of these orphans, and it does have magic, but it's a little bit more of a sprinkling of it. I think you would enjoy it as a lighter read as there is more whimsy to it than it sounds at first.

I'm a little surprised at the effusive Abercrombie love, honestly. I mean, he's good - his prose style is very readable, he has interesting characters and his dialogue is great - but his plotting is astonishingly weak. His books read like a collection of individual scenes that he had in his head that don't really tie together into a cohesive narrative. A lot of stuff happens that seems to be unmoored from the core problem and resolution of the characters and situations. Fun to read, but not well-structured.

While much of "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish" is a very different entry in the "Hitchhiker's Guide" series (and consequently ranks low for me as well), it does give us things like Rob McKenna, Marvin being 37 times older than the universe, and the creator's final message to his creation, which are all EXTREMELY Hitchhiker's things. I can understand, however, if you don't care if Arthur Dent does, in a word... y'know. I adore Adams' chapter advising you to skip the Arthur / Fenchurch romance and cut to the end where there are some good bits including Marvin.

@danamytereads5304
Жыл бұрын
I agree about Fruits Basket. I only watched the series/movie, and there are things I absolutely love.... there are things that were not great. Which sucks because there are good things about this series. I like that Torhu doesn't do anything to break the curse aside just being there for the Sohmas and being kind and supportive. While it goes a bit extreme and she can be a pushover, she does get better at standing up for herself by the end of the series. We all need a Torhu in our lives! Parents in this series suck. Like...all of them. There are some that aren't as bad as other, but they're almost just as guilty for letting things happen. And Tohrus mom I guess was fine aside from her breakdown after her husbands death, I get it, but her parents story...was...oof. big cringe for me. Plenty of mangas out there are obsessed with age gap romances, doesn't mean it's good. 🤢 Akito was a great example of how NOT to do a redemption arc. Like, the complete opposite of Zuko's redemption. Just....no. Did not deserve it. It fills me with rage. Lastly, Momiji deserved better!!! 😭 By far my favorite character in the series. He dresses how he wants and doesn't care what others think of him. He stands up to Akito when no one else would (beach scene) and also calls her out at the hospital telling her what I think. She's lucky Tohru is kind, because if it were him, she wouldn't be getting off that easy and that she's lucky they aren't pressing charges. (I don't remember what all he said. It's been a while. 😛) Then, everyone pairs up except him?! RUDE. He deserves better! 😭 Sorry....didn't mean to go on a rant! 😅😅I could go on and on about how horrible some of the relationships in this series are. But then... there are still things I like. So it's one of those guilty pleasure series. 😅😛

We had very different reading years. There are only a few books here I have also read. The Gilded Ones I would agree with you belongs in good. It was a good book and I will be reading the sequel this year. I also would have placed House of Leaves in Better Than Chips, but I did expect for you to drop it in just good. I am currently rereading it to see if I still like it compared to my 14 year old self, and the answer so far is yes. And I think that is a good position for it. I disagree with you on the other three. I adore the wayward children series and Come Tumbling Down is actually my second favourite in the series. So yes, I would have put that either in Iroh or Better Than Chips because that is how much I love it. It is a flawed book but I love it still. House of Salt and Sorrows....I liked. But it took me a while to get there. I only started to like it when the horror elements started to happen, but after that I quickly fell into it. I would have placed it in good though for that reason. I also adore Christina Henry's works. I love her writing, I love she does her stories, and granted they are not the most original and she doesn't always do great with her endings, but I did love The Ghost Tree. And if I were to rank her books it wouldn't fall low on the list at all. So yeah, I would that in Better Than Chips. Let's hope for my Iroh reads in the next year.

To make an argument for The Thief--the series ages up as it goes. Book 1 is definitely MG, but books 2+ are YA/lighter adult fantasy. There's political intrigue, twisty plots, characters that know less than we the readers do but in the best way, Gen being devious, and a bunch of amazing side characters that get their time in the spotlight. I was one of the many people that started with The Thief series, asking around desperately for "more things like this" and was directed to Lies of Locke Lamora. Going the other way makes sense that it's less captivating.

Also not sure if you noticed (depending on how quickly you read each book after the other) but it switches from first-person in TT to third-person in the others! Wow, I am blown away by how many books you manage to read in a year,. I can't seem to break more than 20 or so a year these days... Truly your life is a model I will strive for when my kids have left the house and I can finally sit down and read for more than 15 minutes at a time. Anyway I am super excited at how many of these titles are new to me. I'm putting the entire top row in my Amazon cart and pick out a few to buy and start reading. I have never been able to find many other people who both appreciate good fantasy writing AND have a discerning eye for detail and quality, so my exposure to the genre has been somewhat random, limited to books I was drawn to in a store or library, or that someone recommended (both hit-or-miss), and the ones popular enough to spawn tv shows or movies that were good enough to make me seek out the original books. Finding your channel and realizing how many books you can highly recommend...even if our tastes turn out to only overlap by 50%, there's enough material to make me feel as giddy as a kid who's just discovered their parents' secret Christmas present stash.
