“Most of the last 45 years practically every day I’ve done what I’ve wanted to do.” I filmed this in 2004 when David had given me the go-ahead to make a bio-doc, a project that was abandoned when he suggested I follow his painting up in Yorkshire instead. David lives life on his own terms, pretty much always has. Wow, who can say that?
For the film-maker this presents some pluses and minuses. You are likely to have a lively and unselfconscious subject. But you‘ll not be able to easily direct the subject or organize the schedule. Indeed, in the three years of filming, David only once agreed to repeat something for the camera. I compare the experience to shooting wildlife: plan and predict, be prepared for the unexpected, there will not be a Take 2.
Hockney is one of the few artists to have achieved early success and to have sustained that success. He has also survived the ravages of the limelight remarkably unscathed, saved I think by his enthusiasm and curiosity.
Filmed over three years with unprecedented access, A Bigger Picture captures Britain’s most beloved painter at work. David Hockney’s return from California to paint the East Yorkshire landscape of his childhood - outside, in all weathers, through the seasons - culminates in the largest picture ever made outdoors. It’s an inspiring story of a painter in creative dialogue with nature and photography, and a revealing portrait of Britain’s most popular and celebrated artist.
“This wonderful film … will be of lasting importance for future generations who want to understand Hockney’s art.” Saturday Review, BBC Radio 4

“This impressive documentary is almost cinematic in its scope… both majestic and intimate” - The Observer
