I saw that deleted ending once. Back in the hey-day of late night cable movies, one night a network station, either USA Network or The Sci-Fi Channel, showed this movie and several things stuck out. Two of them was that Blair-Thing talked when he was assimilating Garry, saying "I told you. No one's getting off of this base." And then the dog running away from the remains of the base and a narrator saying in a menacing voice "Its not over". I had a nightmare which focused on this movie. I dreamt I was watching it but soon I was in it! The Thing was trying to get to my close friend & her boyfriend, K. I don't remember most of what happened other than we were running a lot & trying to hide. As I woke up I saw a bright red flashing sign in front of my eyes, JEALOUSY I had no idea what it meant as I wasn't jealous of anyone. I thought about this for several hours. I decided to go to the shop where she worked as a beautician. Another friend was sitting in her chair getting a haircut. I felt safe to tell her about the dream I had & was now very concerned for her & K. She laughed it off, not unusual for her as she was a happy person & not serious as I am most of the time. A bit later her K came in. She threw both of us out. We went across the street to the restaurant where I repeated the horrible dream I'd had. He told me, "I've often had a feeling S______ would try to kill me if he got a chance". This was beginning to look like a novel so I deleted most of it knowing no one would probably take the time to read it anyway. My dream was somewhat of a premonition, I'd had these before.

One day I came across an interesting theory in the comments, which says that Childs and MacReady are humans and none of them are infected. The fact is that each cell of the Thing is a separate autonomous organism that has two goals: assimilation and survival. Also, the Thing has increased self-preservation. And as the blood test showed, it reacts very instinctively to any threat that can kill it at the cellular level, be it fire or acid, and alcohol belongs to the group of poisons. Ethanol has toxic and deadly effects on the organism that can kill cells. At this moment, after Childs drank the bottle, he did not turn into a monster, and the smile on MacReady's face could mean that Childs had passed the "test" and he was not infected.
@petercampbell8694

The other theory is that the bottle is still filled with petrol (when MacReady made Molotov cocktails), handed it to Childs and when he took a swig then confirms that Childs is a Thing as it doesn’t know the difference between petrol and alcohol, making MacReady smile as he knows

This was the third film to be based on the novella Who Goes There by John W Campbell jr. The first was The Thing From Another World(1951) The second was Horror Express(1972). There’s a new remake in the works by Blumhouse & John Carpenter based on the complete novel of ‘Who Goes There’, which was only recently discovered. The full length novel is actually called Frozen Hell. It was retitled Who Goes There when chapters were cut out to shorten it up in order to publish it as a novella in a popular SIFI magazine in 1938, in order Mr Campbell to put food on the table. He would shortly be hired as the editor for that same magazine and stopped writing, except as editor/mentor in order to help some of his protégés including Isaac Asimov.

At the very end, you can tell who the Thing is. When MacReady is talking, you can see his breath from the cold air. When Childs speaks you see nothing. I think John Carpenter wanted people to see this. What happens after, we will never know. I hope they don't make a sequel. It will be awful, just like the prequel.

Omar, that's completely and utterly untrue. Child's breath is 100% there. See an original print, not a digital copy, and on the big screen. The lighting is different fir each character as well, but the breath is inarguably there.

I think this is a great movie. The stabbing... I dont remember that being in the movie in any way..Cutting that and the doll was a good move. But we do see her in the movie. ?? I haven't seen it in a while. . The monster didnt need to stab anyone to assimilate ...but I guess it could complicate things if one wanted to go that way with murders to add to the confusion. Women would have been nice but they weren't really needed in this version... ( I like women) the story works and is efficient . But that reminds me... some movies are log, others are cut down.... so sometimes the story is too short or too long. This one was about right... but Thrillers are full of people doing stupid stuff like splitting up... and I confess I find the clothing of the monster too unbelievable.... I can believe imitating a body but not clothes... But the movie wouldn't be as exciting if it happened in a nudist camp. I love that I have friends that use Child's and McReady's breath or lack of it to argue either way that one is the monster. I also liked the later Thing but the studio has been blamed for changing a better ending leaving Mary finding destroyed cages in the ship ....giving an opening for a sequel.. The confrontation with the monster boss was stupid. Still.. I hope we get a Sequel soon.

The only thing I can really find wrong with this movie is how it takes place in Antarctica in the wintertime, yet Antarctica is totally uninhabited in the winter that and the Antarctic winter is dark all the time, yet it is often day in the movie.

They filmed this movie right on the USA and Canada border. Stewart in BC and nearby Hyder Alaska was thier drinking playground. Kurt Russell said thier travel to and fro the old mining sight on a bus to a peak near Stewart was often dramatic and hair-raising. Stewart was chosen because of its generous snowfall per annum. All production equipment was brought in over a winding and often dangerous poorly maintained road. Be well

@@jekw23 Not only IS it established in the 1982 film, but it's also established in the novel "Who Goes There". The Thing cannot replicate articles of clothing (therefore it cannot replicate jewelry) and can only assimilate "living" biomass. It cannot assimilate plants, corpses, food or compost. The Thing 2011 is a prequel to The Thing 1982 which is a remake of The Thing from Another World 1951 which is a direct adaptation of the short story "Who Goes There" 1938. Get your facts straight.

@@jekw23 Not only are you too dense to understand but I don't have the time to explain to you why Bill's theory, albeit flimsy and most likely a director oversight, is viable without the prequel film. The fact that you don't even realize The Thing 2011 is a prequel kind of makes your argument moot.

@@franknb7827 at least you had the time to write a patronizing message explaining that you don’t have time to explain yourself. I should not have to explain that you do not judge a 1982 film based on element introduced almost thirty years later by an entirely different group of people. Unless Carpenter or Lancaster factored an element in you don’t retrospectively apply someone’s else’s plot points (prequel or not). I’ll assume that since you can’t back up your own comments you’ve realised your error. No need to respond as I know you don’t have the time.

I was born in 1982, first time I saw "The Thing" was around ten years later, and I was scared shitless and _very_ impressed at the same time. To this day I love to watch this movie every year or so. The claustrophobic and isolated setting just ring my bells, the story is quite complex (for a horror movie, especially the "Swedish camp part" adds a lot), cast and acting is superb and overall quality of the movie is great too. Of course one can clearly see it's age, but - c'mon - it is 41 years old, watch "Avatar" when it reaches this age... Definitely one of the BEST horror movies of all timies! And if you disagree: 5:25. Cheers!

The Thing is one of the best sci-fi horror films ever made! E.T. is the main reason why The Thing didn't do well at the box office and only lead to other films such as Blade Runner, Rocky 3, The Road Warrior and Annie just trampling over it in 1982?
