In case someone's confused that these fundamentals are so vastly different compared to all the others presented in other art related KZitem videos: The title is _"Drawing Fundamentals",_ not _"Art Fundamentals"._ So especially color theory plays no part here. If you did indeed fall for this you now know that you have work to do in at least one of the fundamentals presented: OBSERVATION!

@lonestarr1490

@@necro-claud6370 Sure, but for other art forms they do not constitute a full set of fundamentals. With painting for instance, drawing in itself is kind of a fundamental skill. Like, in order to be a good painter, you also have to be a good drawer (storing all my socks and stuff, ba dum tss). Thus, by the rule of transitivity, those are of course fundamentals for painting as well. But there's then more on top of it, like the aforementioned color theory for instance.

So, genuine question. Why preferably would you use an actual object instead of a photo for reference? I ask because, for me personally, it just unnecessarily confuses me when I look back at my reference object and now I'm looking at it from an slightly different angle, screwing up the sketch. As opposed to a photo reference, where the angle is always the same when I look at it and can better compare my observational skills by lining up my sketch with my photo reference.
@excaliblader
Ай бұрын
It's because photos are 2 dimensional, so there's a certain level of distortion when it comes to photos. You can use photos if you want, but you'll get better at seeing in 3D if you observe from real life instead

Regarding lines. I was so hung up on the technique - that you need to use your arm, or your shoulder, and make the line smooth, and not use chicken scratching. It made my sketching slow and the character poses awkward. Instead, realize that loose, shaky, or scratchy lines also have their place. Optimize the line quality for the stage of your artwork, from the thumbnail, through the rough revisions, and eventually the lineart. Only the final lineart requires that level of care and smoothness. The most important part is to go through several rough refinements, from light and loose to precise and on model.

This is extremely useful. It's interesting to note that going off of this, anatomy seems to not actually be a fundamental, because when I first gained interest in drawing I would encounter online resources that try to teach it before some (if not all) of the things you mention here. No wonder I always found those unhelpful, they were doing the equivalent of teaching you to run before you walk. This info is also valuable to me because I'm trying to draft a rework of my country's education system in order to petition the government, and the main problem I want to fix is that some areas of knowledge (formal and natural sciences) are privileged at the expense of all others (social sciences, arts, humanities, everyday skills...). In my rework, one of the several implementations is indeed slated to be drawing fundamentals, so having an exact notion of what is or isn't a fundamental helps. Sure, the logic part can't really be taught because of what you explained, but the rest is fair game. I do think more people would stay motivated, or just be interested to begin with, in drawing if they were taught the fundamentals from childhood. If an adult sees the entire learning curve from the get-go, they can be intimidated. My proposal would "hide the mountain" until one has already climbed part of it (a concept also used by fighting game players, who don't let newcomers see the mountain until they've reached a certain point). Now, a problem I'll have to sort out is that drawing is no mere theory; these skills demand consistent training (especially linework because it's a motor skill), which a single school year might not be optimized to account for. The solution I'm thinking up is one where drills for the already established skills continue to be revisited in subsequent school years in-between the new lessons, but ultimately I think there's no avoiding some amount of needing to trust the student will keep sharpening the skill on their own. Still, including a skill in the education system even if it can't be fully accommodated is better than not at all. ❤

In perspective, I know how to rotate/tilt objects with station point and placing a new "point vertically below" on either vanishing point ..but I find station points in particular a bit "not practical" when sketching... So my question is, how do you go about imagining objects that are rotated or tilted in perspective when drawing? For me I kind of just think about 2/3 point perspective when the object is at an angle, and if it's rotated.. I will honestly JUST imagine that my two lines are perpendicular to each other in perspective.. does my thought process make sense in that way? So it's just two point but the way I rotate object is to just keep in mind that those lines are opposite in the same way standard 2point/ 3 point is.. (or do you perhaps also imagine the new points below or above the vanishig points when doing it intuitively?) I dont know if that makes sense but I just wanted to explain the thought process 😅

@@excaliblader To simplify, when drawing figures, not every vp seems to be on the horizon line. For example, when an arm is not perpendicular to the ground, it wont line up cause it's tilted a bit. How do you go about calculating it? What specific perspective fundamentals do I need to understand.. in order to understand where I find the vanishing points of the figure? I'll post a drawing if im not clear enough time around thank you for your time as well!

A question i have about the Lineart part is that from what ive heard from other artists is that something that helps make cleaner lines is staying loose and putting a swift stroke since hesitation causes more shake in the line. Is it just more of a person by person thing and practicing both might be helpful. Lineart has been something i am struggling with a lot.
@excaliblader
Ай бұрын
Drawing a line faster does reduce shakiness, but the main problem people usually have with linework is the trajectory, I made a short about this recently kzitem.infoi2enCwjm4uA. The more you work on your line control the easier it'll be to draw better looking lines
