Shout out to guitar stores for tolerating our BS like this. I remember being 15 and going to guitar center with no money or intention on buying anything. Just grabbing whatever looked cool off the wall and jamming on the amps. Really helped me nail down what instruments are comfortable for me and gain a somewhat entry level understanding on operating amps/equipment.

I’ve got a friend in his 40s that is an incredible musician that used to play Go-go music in a band in DC back in the day. He personally doesn’t own a single instrument, but plays keyboards, bass, and drums equally well. He also plays completely by ear. He has no idea what notes he’s playing but everything he plays at the very least sounds like it’s perfect. I asked him how he keeps his skills up if he doesn’t own an instrument, and he said he stops at the Guitar Center that’s a few blocks away a couple of times a week and they let him play whatever he wants for as long as he wants. I ended up going there with him once one evening when we got off work early. We walk in the store, and the entire staff lit up the second he walked in. One guy said “Hey Mark, come check this out!” and they had a vintage Fender electric piano someone had brought in to sell on consignment. Mark walks over and starts ripping all these Ray Charles tunes out of it, and sounds completely FANTASTIC!! He’s playing for about an hour straight, and everyone in the store has come over to watch and listen to him play. I’m talking at least 30 people. Eventually one woman comes over and gives him her card and asks if she can book him to play at a wine tasting party she’s having at her place. He told her he didn’t own a keyboard, and she immediately asked if she could rent the Fender he was playing. They said they couldn’t rent that one, but they had another one very similar to it she could rent. Mark was like “Yeah, I’ve played that one a bunch of times…” Apparently he got booked out of that store 2 a month or so and used their rental a bunch of times. She asked him if he knew some R&B tune I don’t remember the name of, and he just played it, never having played it before in his entire life. Later on I asked him how he did that, and he going on about he pretty much has a photograph memory for music, and he sees the notes being played as a color in his head, and he knows where that color lives on the keyboard or on the neck of a bass and just goes to it. It was pretty cool to see.

My father played guitar all his adult life (I was his best student) I took him to a guitar store when he was in his late 80s and, true to form, he sat down and wanted to try a few of the axes…I put an ES 335 in his hands and he started playing standards in his Jazzy chord & melody style; head down & oblivious to the crowd gathering around him many of whom probably never heard anyone play like that in such an informal setting; quite a departure from the usual guy making noise as he butchered Whole Lotta Love on the fluorescent green Ibanez; everyone in the shop exploded in applause after he hit his last major 7th glissando; he was pleasantly surprised & humble but did compare the Gibson negatively to his beloved ‘65 Epiphone Casino which is now mine (dad played ‘til he passed @ age 95)

I probably took "shy guitar" guy to the another level. I'd researched the crap out of various guitar models online, watch KZitems, etc. Then go to the store and play one tab riff and one chord riff. If I didn't like it, I'd go home and repeat the process until I found one that did what I expected both in sound and comfort. Then I'd ask store to check out, inquire about the additional cost for guitar case, and go on my way. The entire experience would be In an out within 15 min. Being in stores like this around actual good guitarists can be intimidating. So I try to go in and out as quickly as possible. Exactly what I did with my most recent guitar purchase. I have not been back for about 5 years since the guitar still sounds great and is decently maintained.

"The Pick Thief" doesn't actually exist. What you're referring to are the Pick Goblins. They can't be seen because they instantly disappear when you look at them, and their entire purpose in life is to hoard as many picks as possible. Kazekage basic customer service probably. Honestly I’m a drummer with hardly any knowledge on other instruments, (at least at the time of hire) and they had no problem starting me right away and having me sell guitars. Probably depends on the store as well

I work at a used and rare bookstore and SO much of this transfers over. The amount of people who go straight to the antique leather-bound books and start grabbing them when there’s clearly a sight saying they range from $100-$3000…. Unless you are seriously considering on spending the money for a product: Do. Not. Touch.

Hillarious video. I remember stores where banners on the wall quoted "No Stairway to heaven, No Smoke on the Water" and more. I walked into a specialized Bass Guitar Store in Frankfurt once, just to see what they caried. Two guys were having a Blues session and the staff clearly had a difficult time. They had a Status Bass on display with the usual Traee Elliot Stack sitting right beside it. Asked if I could have a go with the Status, to which they happily agreed. Some Mark King Lines later the Blues Session was over. Staff was very happy and me as well, having been able to at least have a go with the Bass of my dreams. 😀
