Namath could still throw some, but he couldn't move to avoid the rush. in 1977 the Falcons and Bears exposed this, so the Rams elected to start mobile Pat Haden for the rest of the season. To be fair Namath admitted to playing with a torn hamstring vs the Bears so he wasn't healthy. But still it was a reach to try and get an established QB way past his prime to try and lead them to a SB. SI writer Paul Zimmerman was a Jets reporter back then and when was asked before the signing he warned the Rams' GM that he couldn't play, and that he only looked good in practice without a fierce rush. But the Rams wanted to sell tickets. Despite these facts, I enjoy looking back and watching Namath on the Rams tor trivial time-travel purposes and memories of simpler times.

He played from 1974-77 on an unrepaired severed hamstring….a cripple teetering on his pins….nobody realized it till he hobbled into end zone vs giants in 74 when was still real good……… here you can see the great arm and the very shaky legs

Namath was Rodgers (talent wise) before Rodgers. Look at Namath and that arm and grace (highlights). He wasn't as good obviously but talent wise...he was oozing talent.

Namath was so smooth.... and had a cannon when he was young. You'll never see quarterbacks today that can pull a great fake like these old timers used to do.

As an L.A. sports fan, it frustrates me that L.A. teams no matter what sport have a tendency to go after star players that are past their prime or on the downside of their career. So frustrating.

Part of the showbiz side of sports. Also seems like a lot of of older athletes want to end their careers in sunny California after toiling for years in buffalo or Detroit

I was 12 years old when the rams brought Joe Namath over from the jets. Even at that age I knew it was a BIG mistake. His knees were a mess by that time. That game against the bears was brutal. I think it was a monday night game. He got sacked so many times. I like Joe Namath a lot but it was just not a good fit. I can remember the rams bringing in Bert Jones, Steve Bartkowski, Dan Pastorini, Dieter Brock. One washed up QB after another. Ugh.

3 TD's? That was the extent of Joe's "highlights" with the Rams?

I remember at that time reading in a football magazine when he joined the Rams "has Joe Namath gone from Broadway Joe to Hollywood Joe?"

Namath with the Rams (4 games 3 TDs 5 INTs) was worse than Roman Gabriel with the Eagles (53 games 47 TDs 37 INTs). However, equally as bad as Johnny Unitas with the Chargers (5 games 3 TDs 7 INTs).

I remember watching a "This Week in the NFL" back in '74 or '75. Namath and the Jets were playing the Bills at Rich Stadium. Typical windy Buffalo game. Namath stepped back to throw a pass down the middle (crossing pattern) and the ball just sailed on him. LOTS of zip, but the ball just took off, a horrible overthrow and pick. by 1974, Namath's knees were SO ravaged that a) he could not push off his right leg with any degree of strength, and b) by that time he could not stomp into his throws with his left leg. You can have a gun, but if you do not know how to use your legs to get a throw off, you are done. Worse, if you have knee issues - especially on both knees! - you'd be hard-pressed to win a flag football game, let alone play successful QB in the NFL. A few examples such as Bill Nelson, Steve Bartkowski, Ken Stabler and, more recently, Teddy Bridgewater were QBs whose careers were severely curtailed/affected prematurely due to severe knee injuries. As Howard Cosell so eloquently stated: "The knee. It's always the knee."

Hate to see former greats hanging on too long. I wasn't a Jets or even a particularly big Namath fan but it was painful to watch him on that MNF game against the Bears. They should've taken him out much earlier. It was like praying for Willie Mays to catch a flyball in the '73 World Series...

My father took me to my first NFL game a year earlier when I was seven years old. It happened to be Joe Namath's last game as a NY Jet. Pictures I have from the game are my only memories. We sat third row in end zone seats. It was a miserable cold day with the Jets losing 42-3. Sitting directly behind us was a woman who turned out to be Namath's girlfriend at the time. I, being an irresistible cute young boy caught her attention and she invited us to join her in the locker room after the game to meet Joe. I do remember for some reason the fans rushing onto the field after the game was over. I don't remember anything after that but I do have a black & white photo of me standing next to Namath, seated in front of his locker while taking off his knee braces. According to my father Joe really looked beat up and wasn't really interested in entertaining any guests. And that was it. If I didn't have the picture I never would believe it happened.

They played 6 preseason games back then? That’s crazy it’s not worth getting hurt for a preseason game. Thank God they shorten the amount of preseason games.
