@helpmii215
16 күн бұрын
This is mostly down to the increased religious diversity (especially in different sects of Christianity) and the lack of cultural affiliation with religion which is common with many other countries and cultures. The US has a long history of religious cults and extremists from the puritans in Plymouth, the davidians in Waco, and the Scientologists in California.
@OddOwl1
15 күн бұрын
It's easy to think that most cults happen in the U.S. because some of the most infamous ones, like Heaven's Gate and Jonestown, did. The U.S's religious freedom, focus on individualism, and a huge cultural emphasis on charismatic leaders to name a few might be a reason. However Aum Shinrikyo was in Japan, and The Movement of Restoration of the Ten Commandments was in Uganda and The Order of the Solar Temple operated in Europe and Canada. Cults mostly form because they often prey on people's fears and desires for belonging or purpose, which are universal human experiences. So i guess while U.S. might have a reputation for it, cults are a global issue. Also media frenzy on US cults is one of the causes, which can make it seem like it's a mostly American problem when it's really not.

Cult steps: Step 1 : Convince people of imminent world destruction. Step 2: Tell them that they can be saved by us. Step 3: Ask them to do whatever you want. Step 4: All this ultimately leads to their end by some other major group of non-members. Sounds like most religions except that they have too many members for anyone to stand up to them.

~~~ Probably the distinction often comes down to societal norms, timing, and cultural context. What starts as a small, controversial group might eventually be seen as legitimate if it survives long enough and gains enough followers. But even then, some groups never lose that so called cult label, especially if they continue practices that are considered harmful or extreme. I guess it’s more about how a group is perceived by the wider society and less about its actual size or legal status.
@catmoonkenobi
14 күн бұрын
@jmraxg I'm just not sure how, after looking at official definitions of the words, cults and religions aren't synonymous. It appears they both mean the same thing, explained differently. It seems we arbitrarily decide what's a cult and what's a religion, dependent on whether we think society should be accepting of them as a group. The definitions of the words don't differentiate them. And that's really interesting, because it means it has absolutely nothing to do with the substance of the groups beliefs as to whether they're a cult or religion. It's a "do we think they're okay" vibe check.
@OddOwl1
14 күн бұрын
@@catmoonkenobi You raise an interesting point Sir, and it's true that the line between cults and religions can seem blurry, especially when looking at the definitions. Both involve a system of beliefs and a group of followers, and historically, many religions started as what we might now call cults. But, but... the distinction often comes down to factors like the size of the group, its social acceptance, *and the behavior it promotes.* Emphasis on the last point please!! Cults are typically viewed as more extreme, often demanding unquestioning loyalty to a single leader, isolating members from society, and using manipulation or coercion to control their followers. Religions, on the other hand, are usually more established, have broader acceptance, and offer frameworks for community and morality without the same level of control. The 'vibe check' you mentioned does play a role, but it's often grounded in the real-world consequences of these groups’ practices and how they interact with society at large.
@@StringyStringCheese I mean, what he said was true, but it would also be dishonest of people to hastily generalize it because of that. There's really no reason to assume they're generalizing Christianity, which they aren't. They're just pointing out the elephant in the room that Christianity is, by far, the most *exploited* religion (in the West). I'm sure studies would agree with me because of Christianity's impact on the West. It's common sense. The power it held, and the role it played in shaping early America. If honest people look back at the core teachings of Christianity and what it's built on, trust me, people wouldn't be quick to generalize it because of a cult that sprouted 2,000 years later. That is, if they have more of a "it's all about my feelings" view towards it, then yeah, they're going to use it to reject every argument and claim, which is the dishonest and lazy approach.
