In some cases these motors don't crunch parts.Depending on the mileage, take the valve cover off, see if you can set the timing back and restart the vehicle. If you can, a broken chain guide probably caused it. Get new guides both chains and a new tensioner from GM. Locktite the guide bolts, GM didn't. Thats usually why this happens. It seems you're a little confused about how pricing works in the automotive repair industry. Allow me shed some light on that subject for you; Labor cost is based on time ⏰️. The time each job should take is estimated by the manufacturer. That information is sold/leased to repair shops so your shop knows what is fair to charge. E.g., An engine swap may call for 7.2 hours, while a timing belt service for the same vehicle might call for 5.0 hours. That time is then multiplied by the shops Labor Rate. Let's say your local shop's labor rate is $90/hr. If the timing belt is a 5 hour job x $90/hr, then the labor cost is 450.00.

@@rcwrecker78 nah he's worth double that, he just doesn't know it yet. It's a pretty easy formula, book time × hourly rate. This engine pays a minimum of 11.3 hrs for R&I according to Chilton labor. At my rate that is 1,356 just in base labor. Wouldn't touch it for less than that because I know my worth and what it actually takes to do this job correctly. He will eventually learn he is undercutting himself.

@@do-it-dave I can’t speak for him but I’m pretty sure he knows his fees are lower than most yet he still stays his course. That’s commendable. Question. Chilton, are those standards for shops or individuals? For a shop I guess that’s in the realm of right. But, they have overhead and have to pay their tech(s). Still, I don’t feel that it takes from the fact that anyone with confidence and the correct procedure for the task can’t do mechanical work. KZitem is very informative as is the web.

@@rcwrecker78 it's industry standard whether you're a one person shop or 15 tech shop. It's what the manufacturer says it takes. Now if an individual wants to give away their valuable time at less than half rate that's up to them. But if they want to run a successful growing business that won't fly.

my dad had a 2009 traverse. WORST chevrolet he ever owned (constantly in the shop for CEL issues O2 sensors the works) one day his girlfriend at the time was getting in it after shopping and it just sounded like this.whirled over like it had zero compression. timing chain is a $3500 job for that vehicle. he had the work done, and the SAME DAY he got it back, the CEL came BACK ON for the oil pressure warning he had when he got the car and got told to keep driving it and that it was a computer issue. low and behold, he was driving it one day after all that and got on it to pass someone and BOOM! spun a rod bearing. the battery apparently died after because ALL the electronics in the vehicle shut off. we got pulled over, had someone we knew come connect a battery charger to it, and got it started. all we could hear was it knocking away. 219,000 miles and it was done for. it drove another 5 or 6 miles to the house where the guy who jumped the car lived (family friend we were going to help that day anyways) got it on a trailer within the week and got it back to the house where it sat for about a year before he decided to try it again. still knocked but still had all the oil pressure and it 100% was a spun rod bearing as it had been a little low on oil when he got on the throttle.

Those Ecotec GMC and Chevy are notorious for timing chain disaster. Number one reason: lack of regular oil changes. Also, the way those engines are built is a contributing factor. There is a higher probability for a Honda and Toyota engine to outlast a GMC, Chevy engine because of their design. Im a mechanic nyself and have seen this. But, regardless with these interference engines, changing the oil even before the time interval is preventing a disaster. Some dealerships "recommend" after 5k and even 10k with fully synthetic, don't ever do that....dont wait until you hear that pop sound.

Just had to Swap our '05 Scion Xb's Engine with an '06 Scion Engine for $450 with 137k miles, plus $1100 for approx. 15-17 hours of labor charged by the Mechanic... So 1400 sounds like a pretty generous deal, considering the horror stories friends have told me about their Mazda and Subaru Cars. Also heard Mazda parts/labor run expensive, too.

Yeah a used motor then do the timing chain and guides on that motor while the motor is out to hopefully prevent the same thing from happening again. So still going to need more parts other than just a motor to get that job done... 😂
