Heat and Collateral are definitely my two favorites. I love Last of the Mohicans, but I saw it as a kid and I didn't appreciate it until the last act of the movie, but loved the whole thing on repeat viewings. Ferrari did not connect with me as it felt like a good biopic for the story that it told, but it was a story I wasn't crazy about. I have a cousin who routinely trashed "Heat" when it came out. Back then,I explained that not only is it a great film, one of my favorites, but like all great art, it inspires,as well as entertains. After listening to Nate tell Neil about Hanna's background,I knew I would never feel complete unless I served in the military, worked in law enforcement, and attended graduate school. Although never reaching the elite status of Lieutenant,Los Angeles Robbery/Homicide Detective, I did all three. Decades later,my cousin is still trashing "Heat". While working a low-paying job, that he hates, with no expectation of advancement or retirement. I am very comfortably retired, and avoiding his complaining phone calls. Thank you Michael Mann. 🙏🙏🙏

Solid list but personally I've would have rated The Last of the Mohicans higher and Miami Vice lower. I was a teen when Miami Vice TV show was airing and it was absolutely magical. I've never seen a television show this cool therefore, I was expecting big things for the film adaptation much like LA Takedown with Heat (which I saw in theaters). Needless to say, I was disappointed with the film version of MV. The story lacked buildup to the climax and the antagonist was underwhelming. Overall, it was mediocre at best.

11:16 No, even after the last rewatch, its still anticlimactic creep. A Mashup of the serial material, and even not the One which i would rather watch. For a example a cinematic version of "Golden Triangle" or the "Prodigal Son" or a something out of "Sons and Lovers", i mean maybe a continuation. Another big criticism which i have about the moviei is, thats not "Miami Vice" the Movie but "Crockett and Tubs" as Title would be more a suitable. The Series always was about the whole squad, and i liked them All. In the movie, i think only Trudy was good, an the other characters hadn´t near the charme and chemistry from the series. The Most Dissapointment i had which the Movie Castillo, for obvious reasons.

My mega film buff father always thought Heat was overly stylized. I didn’t have a problem with it. I stumbled across it on cable around 2004, and it struck me as an instant classic. OK, I could had had the guys tone down the coffee shop scene just a hair, as them acting all over themselves and each other is just a biiit too visible, but everything else in it held up brilliantly through approximately a zillion subsequent viewings. Jericho Mile also made an impression on me that has persisted through the years. It is fairly linear and straightforward, but effectively conveys a certain passion and longing.

Interesting. Having subscribed to several movie and Hollywood channels, I was fearing another video of AI-generated content/images and AI-generated narration with mispronunciations and is-stressed syllables. For a dire example, viz. this lamentable, repetitive Sydney Greenstreet video kzitem.info/news/bejne/p6Ga25uqsp1ogYI A few films to add to my viewing list in semi-retirement in Slovakia - specifically, Blackhat, Manhunter Miami Vice and Thief. (Boxing- and F1-themed films hold no appeal as subjects.) I would demur on Public Enemies - watched it a while back and I find the cinematography and visual feel quite strong. Luckily Johnny Depp far outranks Lawrence Tierney ('Dillinger' 1945) in looks and in acting skill. Have added it to be viewing list - worth a second bite.

LA Takedown is an interesting watch/precursor to Heat but another (west coast) version of Miami Vice was not needed. The beginning of Takedown even shamelessly rips off the bedroom sequence of Manhunter with 'retired' cop Petersen in bed with wife (the 'hot' ocean and the soft, cool white sheets all subtext in the background). NO Way LA Takedown ranked higher than Ali and Last of the Mohicans (only Mohicans flaw is the perfect hair of Daniel Day Lewis: Where did he find the 18th century hair stylist?) If Ali is like a eulogy so be it but a well thought out eulogy can still have plenty to say. Ali movie does have plenty to say. It's Cassius Clay/Mohammad Ali over a 10 yr period with a recreation of one of the greatest fights in the history of the 'Sweet Science' mixing politics and more. I'm beginning to think Mann's Ali is extremely underrated because it is not a quick watch. But, Ali's life was far from a simple one. Miami Vice, also, was not that great a show. You can see the stylized cool (unintentionally) self parodying of Miami Vice creeping into LA Takedown. Manhunter had avoided that cool tough talking cliche 3 yrs earlier (and the cinematography in Mannhunter was just as good if not better than Vice too). Anyways, a shout out to Jericho Mile which I might have to argue was a better tv movie than Takedown. Amazing rep of prison life even with no swearing permitted in script. Peter Strauss as the protagonist (damaged though ... he was in prison for murder) always a consummate pro-actor, while Brian Dennehy does his bad guy inmate thing very well. I do need to see Collateral. Thanks for Thief reminder, too, and probably most impotantly, The Insider. Prime Video time.

If you discount a movie because of the time period it's set in, well then you've lost me. I also don't agree with you that there's only shallow characters in the last of the Mohicans, but I think that's brought on by your preconceptions. If you enter a movie determined it's not for you, you're less likely to enjoy it. On the other hand I don't like most of the mob movies or heist movies I've seen. But I don't go into it expecting to dislike it. The movie has to have characters that resonate with you, on that point I agree. So I didn't really enjoy Heat, but I liked Collateral.
