For those unaware, the reason the playoff brackets begin in 1933, despite the fact the NFL began in 1920, is because the NFL would crown the team with the best season record as the champion with any kind of playoff game or championship game. Also, only in the 1950s can you have a championship game between the Browns and the Lions 😂🤣
@sportshistoryinc
Жыл бұрын
DAMN you did the Lions and Browns DIRTYYYYY bro, but yea thats all 100% correct, although I wish they had started them in 1920 just to see what could've happened!
@Larry_Harvilla
Жыл бұрын
The reason the playoffs even started in 1933 was the extremely positive response to a hastily-scheduled 1932 playoff game matching the Portsmouth Spartans (two years away from moving to Detroit and becoming the Lions) and Chicago Bears. Ties were discarded when calculating winning percentage in those days. This meant the Spartans' record of 6-1-4 and the Bears' record of 6-1-6 were identical, and both superior to the Green Bay Packers' 10-3-1 mark (.857 to .769). No tiebreakers were in effect, so the league had to scramble to put on a "Playoff Game" to determine the 1932 champions. Da Bears ended up winning the game 9-0. This game was received so positively that the NFL made it a permanent fixture beginning in 1933.
@robertsprouse9282

@@Larry_Harvilla, it officially went down as a regular season game, a tiebreaker such as what used to be employed and treated as a regular season game until recently in MAJOR LEAGUE Baseball where its now gone strictly to tiebreaker criteria lists, thus when PORTSMOUTH lost, the team that was in third, GREEN BAY.. moved up to second place in the final standings, and PORTS. dropped to third= .769 pct for GB, VS. .750 PCT FOR PORTS. Later, the league changed it to an exhibition game as far as any stat records were concerned, but still awarded the CHICAGO BEARS the title. By the way, when both teams played each other twice before during that season, they tied both contests. That was important because the old tiebreaker had been head to head but if there was a split, the winner of the second meeting head to head, won the tiebreak. Tying both games rendered that second game method moot. That changed the very next season when a division playoff tiebreak game was added even if there was a sweep or a win and a tie in the head to head= see the 1950 season when the Cleve BROWNS were swept by NYG and the L.A. RAMS were swept by the CHIBEARS, but both CLEVE AND LA beat them in their conference(from 1950-67/68= to a division) playoff. That game also was the last game in which the passer had to be at least five yards behind the line of scrimmage when they threw the ball. When CHIBEAR Bronko Nagurski received a handoff and ran toward the o-line, he stopped when he couldn't find a hole, and threw an option pass to a wide open receiver named RED GRANGE FOR A TOUCHDOWN, three quarters after RED was knocked unconscious= in the first quarter!! THE SPARTANS put up a squawk, saying BRONKO was not 5 yds. behind the line. In addition, it was the first time in pro football that the goalposts were on the goalline, and not the endline. They returned to the endline in 1974-75.. Finally, it was the first pro game with hashmarks, exactly 10 yds from the sidelines where they stayed until...they moved inward to 23.5 yds. from each sideline in 1972-73's season. It was the only NFL regular season game played on a sixty yard field..and it had rectangular until the sidelines at the "corners," endzones which had oval roundoffs at the sidelines where they met the endlines= like a hockey rink, although the field was bigger than a rink. There was a good reason for those differences. It was played on a hockey rink's arena floor of concrete where a charity funds raising exhibition(preseason) between the Bears & ChiCards had been played two seasons before. They expanded the field to a virtual 80 yds by having a rule that once the ball wound up or penetrated the opponent's 10 ydline, the offense had to move it back 20 yards. For instance, if a play took the ball to the opponents defensive 7 yard line, the ball would come back the first time of penetration on a drive only, to the opponent's 27, the latter created a pseudo but virtual 80 yd. goalline to goalline field. The endzones were about 8 yds to the corners, and 10 yds to each endline from the goalline. All of that was done in response to a blizzard-like hard snowfall in mid- December that drove the game from Wrigley Field home of the BEARS, inside to CHICAGO STADIUM, the now extinct arena home of the NHL BLACK HAWKS(NOW SPELLED BLACKHAWKS) on a Sunday night, Dec. 18th, to be exact. The goalposts were moved up because the fear was that PAT attempts would hit the backwall and ricochet back on to the field of play and hit and injure players or patrons in the stands. Field goals and drop kicks for PAT pts. OR AFTER FAIR CATCHES, although they allowed pooch-punts, were not allowed. Punts and kickoffs, and passes sometimes went in the stands, one hit a sign advertising the BLACK HAWKS, and one hit a stadium organist. Rarely did any kicks stay inbounds to be returned, only one was returned during the whole game. The hashes came about when the field was so narrow, 45 yds wide, that the old rule where the ball was snapped where it was downed unless the off. team did not want an unbalanced o-line, in that case the ball was moved in 10 or 15(I cannot remember) yards from the sideline while the offense was penalized a down, akin to golfball placement drop penalties when the ball cannot be retrieved up a tree or is buried well underwater; well, that old football rule was scrapped and all snaps came from the hashes, or inside them. The field was that concrete covered with tanbark(usually from leather-like tree bark such as hemlock trees used in leather tanneries) mulch leftover from the circus that had just left town. It was also covered with the smell of buried elephant dung, and broken elephant tusks left over from the circus, a smell so bad that one of the Bears vomited on the field, lol..and there were circus fans' cigar butts, too, on it. On one play a SPARTAN was running wide open toward his endzone about to score a TD, when he tripped on something, and fell=Portsmouth did not score at all.. The Bears got their other three pts on a PAT and a safety when SPARTY in their endzone fumbled the ball out of bounds behind the goalline. From that point forward after the game, the NFL dropped the NCAA's rules that they had been going by, and created their own rules. IT COMPLETELY CHANGED PRO BALL= HASHMARKS, POSTS ON THE GOALLINE, PASSING FROM ANYWHERE BEHIND THE SCRIMMAGE LINE, AND OF COURSE, THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, AND the HEAD TO HEAD TIEBREAKERS CHANGE until 1967-68. And..the NFL RULES ADOPTIONS over the NCAA's.. Other than that... lol.. Oh, one more thing: PORTS. passer/ wing halfback Dutch Clark a HALL OF FAME GUY could not play because the college he basketball coached for, COLORADO COLL. would not let him leave without breaking his contract with them, because they had a game vs. WYOMING U. that day.. lol..that absence helped creating passing so bad that there were only 5 completions and eight picks between the two teams.

For anyone curious why there were 8 playoff teams per conference for the 1982 season...There was a players strike that shortened the season from 16 to 9 games. The NFL decided to expand the playoff format in an effort to recoup lost revenue from the regular season due to the 57 day strike.

Interesting how it took until 1981 for all participants in the AFC side of the bracket to be former AFL teams. Pre-Merger NFL teams in the AFC bracket until then: 70: Colts 71: Browns & Colts 72: Browns & Steelers 73,74: Steelers 75-77: Colts & Steelers 78,79: Steelers 80: Browns Even then in 1981, the Bengals and Dolphins were AFL expansion teams, so part of the original 10 who were merged in. For this to happen to happen again in the current NFL, the Bengals and Titans (former Oilers) must win their division and either the Bills, Jets, and/or Patriots must win the East or be Wild Cards along side any of the Western Division squads. 1991 was the only time that only the Original AFL teams were in the AFC bracket. This will never happen again as long as the divisions are the same.
