One of the most important ingredients in a good fight is risk or at least the feeling of risk, for example, the fight between Obi-wan and Anakin feels like there is high risk even though we already know how it's going to end and it has to maintain that feeling through multiple rewatches, by contrast, the sequel fights have no feeling of risk after the first half of the movie on the first watch through because Rey is a Mary Sue and can't lose. And saying she is strong with the force isn't a good excuse, in Anakin's first duel with Count Dooku there is more suspense than in the entire sequel trilogy combined because even though we know he is the chosen one destined to become Darth Vader he isn't at that level yet and if he had won that first fight it would have been ridiculous. I would rank all the Sequel fights at the bottom because of this. The throne room fight is particularly bad because not only is there no sense of danger but the choreography was terrible, the main defense that I have heard in favor of the is fight is that choreography with multiple people is hard which I don't doubt but I have seen even larger choreographed fights that were leagues better so that argument won't work. On a side note, the Clone Wars has some of the best fights in Star Wars like Sidious vs Sauvage and Maul and Ahsoka vs Maul.
@edgarretana8377
2 жыл бұрын
This. That’s the biggest problem I had with the sequels. Because Rey is presented as a Mary Sue with the first two films I just didn’t care about any of the fight scenes in the final film of the trilogy. I never feared that Rey would get hurt so anytime she was in a fight I was just thinking what butt fuckery is Rey gonna pull this time to win. It’s such a shame because with the technology we have now the sequel trilogy had all the setup it needed to be the best of Star Wars and it flopped due to the writing. All 3 films have some gorgeous cinematography but without good characters to get invested in the fights carried no weight.

i love the fights in the prequels, but come on. There are absolutely no feelings of risk when watching prequel duels, you know exactly how each and every one of them will end. And that's OK, just be fair when you try make an argument. Also, saying there is no risks because Rey is a mary sue, is like saying there is no risks because she's the protagonist. Of course she's going to win in the end, it's star wars. Light always wins. Not to mention Kylo was shot by Chewie's bowcaster in TFA, Rey was struggling with praetorian guard while Kylo was fighting 4 at the same time, and Kylo was was dominating the entire fight on the death star and was 1 second away from killing her :3.

@@Yoda-wf6bu "the sequels still suck though" is the logic of some of these braindead idiots. It definitely sucks the worst out of all three of the trilogies, but there are good elements that people tend to ignore because they can't form an opinion for themselves and parrot the same shit "They swing it like bats, not light swords". As if the Original Trilogy didn't do this. That's literally how Luke and Vader fought in ESB and ROTJ and are praised for having good choreography. People talk about Rey making herself open with her wide strikes yet ignore Obi Wan's unnecessary spin in ANH or Luke's twirl in ESB. It's not a sequels issue only. But then again, people tried to justify the ANH duel between Obi Wan and Vader by saying that there weren't any flashy duels at the time, ignoring that Akira Kurosawa, who George Lucas took an idea of Original Trilogy lightsaber duels from, had flashy duels for that time in the 1970s. Or the "they were old" excuse. Which is funny since ROTS Windu, Palpatine, Yoda, and Dooku were much older than those two and fought flashy. I hate how everyone clowned on the prequels and harassed George Lucas and the Prequel cast, especially both Anakin's(Jake Lloyd and Hayden), now praise George Lucas words as if they weren't harassing him to now loving the prequels cast and harassing the sequels cast and trying to justify it as it being their fault The SW community is a shitty one at best

Yeah, lets agree to disagree. The "new" duels are shit and that is mostly because of Rey. Not the actress, but rather Rey the character. She has learned basically nothing, yet manages to keep up with a man who has studied lighsaber and force techiques for most of his life. And for what reason? "Oh, well plot dictates she must be able to compete with the superior duelist, so we made it that way". Every time she swings that lightsaber, it looks like she is trying to swing a warhammer, most of the time one handed at that. And by the looks of it, its a much too heavy warhammer too. They either did not train her muscles at all (I do not want to believe that) or never gave her any fencing instructions (that i do believe). It also looks, like Kylo Ren is slowing himself down to match her insufficient speed, which makes their fights all the more horrifying.
@braunstein5645
2 жыл бұрын
The thing that makes this even worse: I am not sure if the lightsaber blade is actually laser, but if it is, then the blade is weightless! Which makes a lightsaber very light, so there is no reason why Rey should have trouble to lift it for an attack.
@MrNachtgespenst
2 жыл бұрын
@@braunstein5645 Yeah, it is a big part of why it all looks so weird. They use, well I guess one could call them "Sword-Dummies", and put the "lightsaber" over them, as we all know. Only... these "Sword-Dummies" are much to heavy for Daisy Ridley, as I already said, at least for her "fighting style"(If we can call it that). An instructor in real life and also in the movies themselves was obviously needed. They all justify her "prowess" with her having fought with a staff for years. Well why not get her a double-bladed lightsaber far sooner? Or get someone to teach her actual lightsaber forms, or have her read about them!!! (Makashi would have been a good way to counter her lack of the" right" muscles). I find it disturbing, that there are countless fans out there who have a better grip on how a lightsaber is used in battle than an actual Star Wars actress. Again, not her fault I believe, but still just so sad. :(

his pick for #5 is literally the worst star wars lightsaber duel.. It is far too over choreographed and literally has soo many points where the people they're fighting just chose not to harm rey and kilo. literally, there is a scene where rey drops her lightsaber and the gaurd just leaves his arm there to not hit her. also, 3 guards attack kilo's lightsaber at the beginning instead of him. One of the most disappointing fight scenes in Star Wars. I mean, even with the short Qui Gon vs Maul, theres suspense and real danger. that's the problem with the prequel fights. although they may have good lighting and color, there is no presented danger as people just chose not to injure eachother. it's why the prequel fights are the best fight scenes. They have good effects and they present danger. I mean, we see yoda defeated by sidious before the finale of Obiwan and Anakin. we see Qui Gon die before Obiwan fights maul solo. We see Obiwan battle Grevious, then Order 66 is commenced and the council members are defeated by sidious. we see anakin and Obiwan lose to Dooku before yoda battles him. then see the rematch at the beginning of the next movie. the danger in the prequel fights are real, and that's why they are the best fights. You don't have that danger with the sequel fights, yet you do have them with the originals; however the fighting and effects of the originals don't match that of the prequels.

I mean, it’s not great, but TPM’s final duel has multiple instances where Kenobi has to swing at Maul’s lightsaber (in attacks that make no logical sense) that are at least as silly. I personally have neither in my top 5, and both on the edge of my top ten for this reason. AoTC has Anakin offer his arm to Dooku (I really like the head-cannon that Dooku used force stun, but it is not officially supported) and Yoda never swinging a single strike that would have actually hit Dooku (actually, I think there might be exactly one). Even RoTJ had Vader randomly fall over and awkwardly grab the rail (maybe he purposely threw the fight? Still looks awkward). Star Wars choreography has always been more flash than substance, and the throne room is not especially different in quality.

You can’t always portray on screen how comics/books describe how the force abilities or saber skills worked. If you put most of that into live action, it would look ridiculously OTT. The fight between Rey & Ren on the Death Star ruins was very well put together, not everything about the sequels was trash. Besides, we can look back at the original fight between Vader & obi wan and love the emotion behind the scene (whilst admitting it looks clunky and slow by today’s standards)

The only sequel fight that ranks even close to top 5 for me is the duel at the end of 7, the others aren’t great. My top 5 duels: 5. Count Dooku vs everyone on Genosis (mainly due to the excellent lighting of Anakin and Dooku’s faces from the sabers, and it being the first time we see Yoda fight) 4. Luke vs Vader in Ep. 6 (score and story implications are excellent, plus I love the green and black ensemble Luke has) 3. Luke vs Vader in Ep. 5 (once again score and story is there, but the fighting style and use of the force raises this one to top 3 and could be my top 1 depending on the day) 2. Obi Wan and Qui Gon vs Maul (this is probably my favorite pure fight but the story isn’t as impactful as some of the others. Duel of the fates is still one of the greatest scores of all time) 1. Obi Wan vs Anakin (say what you will about the prequels, the emotions throughout this fight are very present and the choreography is second to none. Possibly the strongest story implications of any fight scene and the birth of Darth Vader make this my personal favorite fight, though any of the top 3 are hard to separate for me)

I like how Dooku vs. Anakin part two mirrored the Return of The Jedi throne room scene. With Palpatine's potential apprentice ridding Dooku of his hands, like Luke rid Vader of his hand years later. Palpatine's sitting in a space chair trying to get the younger and more powerful potential apprentice to kill the older former apprentice of the Emperor. It shows how Luke could have ended up just like Vader. Kind of reminds me of how similar the Luke hallway scene was to the Vader one.

The Rey and Finn vs Kylo duel was bad, but the ANH duel was even worse. People mad that they swung lightsabers like bats in the sequels yet than two men in a retirement house fighting with sticks is better? You can use emotional baggage as an excuse, but most people watched it based on release. Meaning it was the first movie most of the Star Wars fans watched. Meaning there was no lore-built story for most people that watched it new or first and it was fresh off the bat, so there's no buildup or emotional weight behind it. Not to mention that Obi Wan in that duel acknowledges Vader as a completely different person than Anakin, stating him to be "Darth", no more calling him Anakin or having any sort of sympathy or emotion. So, it would've been the same if they removed Anakin from the suit and put someone like Barriss Offee in it Even then I don't think the emotional weight excuse can save that duel from the garbage it was. But apparently, it's excusable also because "they were old". Which is funny because Yoda was 900 years old(old for his species), Dooku was 82, Windu was 53 and Palpatine was in his early 60s and they didn't fight like old men but were more agile than most of the jedi that existed for their time The reason I have to state that I hate the sequels because I feel like some nostalgia losers are gonna want to discredit my whole argument with "you are a sequels fanboy". I don't care about the sequels. I hate how they did Luke and how OP they made Rey. But I'm not gonna let nostalgia blind me to the point I can't at least see some salvageable things from it or parrot others opinions.

Rey kicks 3 guys at once, there are guards who are just roaming around and purposely missing their swings.

Tbh I really dont get some of the placings. All the duels involving Rey and Kylo were pretty terrible, besides from the one in episode 8 where they seitch sceneries. The one witv them against the guards is a badly executed yet flashy distraction from the fact that the movie was bad in basically every way. The duels involving those two should be placed on the bottom of the list, even below Qui-Gon vs Maul, seeing as that duel actually had storytelling purpose. Secondly, although I do really like the original trilogy, the fight between Vader and Ben Kenobi should be placed lower. Yes it served awesome storytelling purpose, but the choreography was just awful. Almost as bad as some of the newer fights from the sequels. If you're ranking duels, the chorelgraphy should play a significant role, because thats a big big part of what the duel is about. If you want a good storytelling scene you could just do a dialogue, no need to do a flashy duel for that. Thats why choreography should never be left out completely. I know it served great purpose for the story and was truly breathtaking and heartbreaking moment, but it just wasnt a well executed duel in and of itself.

1. Battle of the Heroes - Anakin Vs Obi Wan. Is my favourite, that has not been topped the choreography is unrivalled from it's intensity, speed, emotional weight, high rewatchability, skill and dedication displayed I admire Hayden and Ewan for all the time they put in as it certainly shows and pays off. Combine this with a stunning set piece and momentous score, simply fantastic. 2. Bespin Luke vs Darth Vader. You can see Luke's progression but its nowhere near where it needs to be to beat Vader as Yoda previously mentioned. Luke's hubris and desire to save his friends almost cost him, while he shows promise Vader displays the significant gap in technique and power of the force toying with him. Combine this with the ICONIC reveal its a battle of mental as well as physical fortitude. 3. Duel of the Fates - Qui Gon + Obi Wan V Darth Maul. The choreography being so tight makes every strike have meaning and weight behind it as the song suggest it's a duel of fate. They way it starts and stops getting the viewer excited while allowing them to process what happing keeps them engaged without it becoming tiresome which is a criticism i see with Battle of heroes and is Highly memorable and the highlight of TPM. Honourable mentions: Mace Windu vs Darth Sidious Ahsoka Vs The Magistrate Maul + Opress vs Sidious Ahsoka Vs Darth Vader (Rebels)

The throne room scene is fantastic in last jedi. Except for the guards literally doing nothing in the back ground, guards having to swing high because the actors forgot to duck. There is literally a point in the fight where Rey kicks one dude, and three people go flying. It's so bad it's reminiscent of early Jackie Chan movies.

I love several of them and can't split the very best into a ranking. Below are my top ones today, but it could be different depending what Star Wars feels I'm looking for! As a battle set piece Kenobi vs Annakin at Mustafar. It's so desperate and emotional and raw. Then for the tension and battle of body, heart and mind, it's Luke vs Vader in Jedi. But then again(I know it's not from the movies and shouldn't count for this video but....) for sheer perfection, a sense of closure and peace, it's Kenobi vs Maul in Rebels. Brief, stunning and perfect. I went from seeing them as two irreconcilably bitter enemies to suddenly understanding they were two tragic brothers in arms. I sat in stunned silence after that one.

Okay so just so everyone is aware… there is no choreography that is better or faster than when Obi-Wan pressed Darth Maul immediately after watching his master die. Obi-Wan shows so much aggression and in doing so was able to cut Mauls saber in half. The second those laser panels that were keeping Kenobi from being able to help his master were deactivated and he squared up with Maul… up until he cut the saber in half, that choreography’s speed has never been matched to this day…. 24 years later.

@@almightytm2399I understand your point but even so, the choreography is just too bad compared to the prequels, if it had had just a bit of smoothness and didn’t look like they where sort of flailing around it would’ve been decent. @brandonaumiller3997
3 жыл бұрын
@@diamondscar5818 I agree with the flailing but I disagree with your last point about Kylo being able to wreck Rey. Their first fight, Kylo is a more refined fighter, but he has just killed his father and he has also just been shot, putting him physically and mentally off balance. It levels the playing field for Rey, who, while unrefined, is still strong with the force. In TLJ they don’t fight, and by the time you get to the force awakens she has been technically ‘trained’ by both Luke and Leia and even still, she wins the fight on the death star ruins with a cheap shot after Kylo takes his guard down. Now, does this mean Rey is not a Mary Sue or an OP character? No, she is still all of those things but I just think that Kylo losing all his fights against her is not completely immersion breaking because she has realistic advantages in all of them outside of her being over powered.
@diamondscar5818
3 жыл бұрын
@@brandonaumiller3997 Being strong with the force doesn't equal lightsaber skill, quote from Luke in the new mando episode: Talent without training is nothing, e.g. every player who becomes good at a video game starts out playing horribly. As for TLJ and ROS, TLJ was almost immediately after TFA, so she should still be almost the same skill level, in ROS while she has been trained by Leia, her training pails in comparison to the years of training Kylo has done from such a young age. I know she wins from a cheap shot but still she shouldn't be matching him until that point. It literally makes no sense. As for him being weaker and mentally unstable, the sith use their pain to make themselves stronger, and also it wouldn't make a difference, with her lack of training, Kylo would need to be literally unable to lift his saber to lose.

Man I was disappointed to see force awakens and rise of skywalker so high on this list. Force awakens dual completely misunderstands the force by allowing Rey, a complete beginner, hold her own against Kylo and even beat him with the force to grab the lightsaber! (Doesn't matter if he was injured, he could still stand and swing a lightsaber). But Luke, the son of the chosen one, had to train with obi wan for a good amount before he could even lift the same lightsaber out of the snow without another force user to beat. Rise of skywalker completely cheapens the force by letting ppl kill someone then say oh wait jk lemme just bring you back from the brink of death. What even were the stakes of their dual? It was so forced.

1. Kylo was shot by a gun that made 2-3 stormtroopers fly into the fucking air, into his chest, Kylo was also in great emotional pain after killing Han and we all know emotions can win, or lose you a fight in star wars. Rey also knows how to fight with a staff. Also the point you made with obi wan is pointless, because when New Hope was realeased, force users didn't have the abilities to make things fly, George made that up while making empire strikes back. 2. No it wasn't forced at all, the duel had great thematic meaning, it was the duel of the fates Kylo was trying to get Rey to the dark side and Rey was trying to get the artifact, after he destroyed it, Rey just went into rage and out of the rage she left herself kill him after he was disstracted by his mom. Also her healing him was a metaphor for him becoming good again? She literally killed Kylo ren in that moment, when she revived him, even the scars she gave him were gone and her reviving him made him realize that even after he wanted to kill her before he was distracted she still cared for him and then one of the best scenes in star wars happened, Ben and Han having a conversation mirroring they conversation in tfa.

@@dankestgarbageoninternet2099 1. Everything you said was true, but that doesnt matter when it comes to force using which was what the original comment was about. 2. You completely missed the point but alright. It was about the fifth movie and the scene on Hoth, where Luke is trapped in the cave and hanging upside down. I dont even know how you went from that to episode four but alright. Its just sad to see what Disney has done to this franchise. The movies they released are just trying to beat each other for the title of worst Star Wars film ever, the plots are stupid and terrible, have waaay too many coincidences even for a Star Wars movie and the character writing and evolution is just atrocious. Paired with the fact that Disney doesnt understand lightsabers or the force at all makes for a terrible outcome. Rey is WAY too overpowered, she learns quicker than Anakin at a way older age which makes no sense in two ways. She should never have survived her first duel with Kylo, or at least gotten severely injured like Finn.
