The way I see it, Alex Turner has probably realised that he's taken the Arctic Monkeys as far as he could and is content with making music he's happy with even if it means appealing to a smaller audience They covered the garage/indie rock that was popular at the time with their first two albums. They experimented for a few years with Humbug and Suck it and See and then blew up internationally with AM. Alex also went on the record that he experienced a lot of writers block when working on TBHC and couldn't really find inspiration in the guitar dominated music they were known for, hence why TBHC was such a massive change for the band When you think about it, Arctic Monkeys have pretty much already done it all at this point and don't really have anything left to prove. They can show that they can make popular rock albums while also being capable of being experimental and more creative when they want to I'd rather they continued to make interesting projects like Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino and The Car, even if the results are mixed rather than go on a long hiatus or try and poorly replicate the sound of their older albums

To be fair no one knew what to expect in 2018, there were no singles off the album and when we found out the names of the tracks and album we were even more confused. The first time listen is weird, at least in my case. I didn't know what to feel, I didn't hate it, hell I don't even think I disliked it, but literally everyone expected an AM 2.0 but we got pretty chill music and a deeper outlook on how they evolved. As weeks turned into months I fell in love with the album and listened more and more to them even in the 4 years that went by I started to like the songs I didn't even pay attention to the first time around. It's weird but that's what makes a it a memorable experience.

Suck it and See is hugely underrated and that's a hill I'm gonna continue to die on. Like I get that it's their least popular because of its sonic simplicity, but the more stripped back sound really brought focus to his lyrics, and imo it has the best writing of any Arctic Monkeys album. He just found this perfect balance between being relatable and genuine, and pretentious and abstract, without veering into the more pop-oriented hooks that AM has.

One way that I love to think of the Arctic Monkeys different styles throughout their albums is that Alex and the band are getting older and each album reflects their age in some way. With their their first two albums it bring a very teenage feel, then the next two feel like the transition into adult life. Then comes AM in which it's full adult (also with how many adult themes are referenced in the album) following this trend TBHC gives off an older more relaxed vibe and The Car sharing a similar feel to that as well. I can't wait to see where they go from The Car, but also fear the band could possibly be reaching their end point soon.

This is why I would consider the Arctic Monkeys as one of the best bands of the modern era, if not of all time. I personally feel they do not have a bad song and that although there are low and high points throughout the albums, I wouldn't say there's an album or a song that I don't like, which can't be said for my other favourite bands. I think of song wrtiting like hand wrtiting: it's almost impossibly to disguise your natural hand writing, you can try really hard to change the way to draw letters, but your natural style will always shine through a little. You can write an academic essay, or a novel, or a poem, or write something someone else wrote, but the letters are still all yours. Different subjects but the same method of delivery. Arctic Monkeys can make albums that sound very different, different tones and instruments and tempos and inspirations... but they always sound like themselves. And that essence, that collection of the four of them making music together, with other colorful characters and influences peppered in, that's the soul of the band. I think that's why I enjoy all their projects, as varied as they are. The songwriting is consistently beautiful, even if it shapeshifts every album.

The lyrics on TBHAC were his best in my opinion, like you said, very memorable and quotable. The examples are endless- "Swamp monster, with a hard-on for.......connectivity" "I've got the party plugged right into my skull" Lots of these gems interwoven with subtle observations/critiques of modern life- and what helped Alex no end was the fact he wrote some of the songs from the POV of the various desolate inhabitants of his fictional resort. He essentially discovered a new lyrical language he could use, and had a lot of fun with it. They helped create this feeling of immersion, but were also hilarious sometimes. The Car might not be as memorable , but I'm gonna cut Alex some slack, as lyrically, it's impossible to top that masterpiece. "I'm a big name in deep space- ask your mates"

Every album fits a specific mood & I feel that only few artists are able to do that. Even if it's just with lyrics, us listeners are taken somewhere different with every stage of their evolution (TLSP included). True mastery!!

As alex himself said, he doesn't want to repeat sounds, and i respect that. They literally have an album for every mood and we have to accept it, they're not garage teenagers now they're grown ups. So ofc they're involving. I love all their albums, and yeah i have favorites but i respect them all

I loved The Car. People that don't get it also don't quite catch or hear Riot Van.(One of my fave songs from WPSTIA) This sound has always been tucked in... it just slowly leaked out over time. Thanks for the video!

The main thing for me about their new sound is that 2007 Arctic Monkeys is a band I would absolutely love to see in a massive arena, surrounded by people dancing and jumping and losing their sh*t, whereas 2022 Arctic Monkeys is a band I'd love to see in a smaller venue with dimmed lights. They are like two completely different bands. There's a strong disconnect between the atmosphere they evoke. And I understand why the people who buy tickets to their concerts (which we know is where the real money is) may feel less pleased with their new sound if what they want is to see a rock band bringing the house down at a festival. Having said that, I love each and every album, TBHAC hasn't stopped blowing my mind yet, and The Car makes me impossibly emotional even though Turner doesn't want me to, lol. But, yeah, I understand the discontent too.

I love that I can listen to Arctic Monkeys whatever mood I'm in because every album has such a distinct tone. I was travelling alone when The Car came out and damn the vibes were exquisite. Humbug is still my favorite album though

Arctic monkeys bring in a new set of fan base with every album they release lol but I really like how changing their sound is. I'm a fan of the Beatles and I have come to appreciate the evolution of a band's sound. Props to them for the courage to experiment and not care about the public perception

I don't think that there is anyone who thinks change is bad, no matter which "era" of the Arctic Monkeys people most connected with. It's more that not liking their most recent project is automatically dissmissed as "tasteless/ being a hater". I don't know but to me "it's not my thing" is a very valid feedback to any music project.

Every album after Favourite Worst Nightmare was a “grower” to me… took me a few spins to come around to it, a few more spins with each subsequent album, too. But I think I’ve just come around to ‘The Car’ today, listening to it in headphones and really paying attention to the lyrics. This is why Arctic Monkeys will forever be my favorite band… there’s always something to discover and finding ties back to the beginning is the best part.

The proof that they are very versatile. They went from being my favourite band, Humbug being my long time favourite album ever, to hating the sound of AM, and TBH+C, I absolutely stoped listening to the band and now I'm enjoying The Car. I grew old with the Arctic Monkeys, their songs carried me during all my teenage heartbreaks, my ups and my downs, my emo/punk phase. And I think that is the case with a lot of ppl. Even with all the success they've had, they're songs still hold a very special place in our hearts.

Oh man a tame Impala video then this now? You're going right into my top 5 artists with these recent vids and I love it! Also I loved the car, I can see why people don't like it given its a sharp turn from most am albums (with the exception of tbh&c) but I love that Alex has brought the band into a new sound/style rather than banking off the sound of AM because of it's popularity like I see a lot of musicians do nowadays. I hope the band continues to stride through new territory and expand their sound, it keeps them fresh and adds an extra level of excitement with new albums not knowing where they'll take their sound next.

Thanks for this! I gotta say Humbug is still my favorite record thus far, but each of them has something special, WPSIA is an awesome debut, Favorite Worst Nightmare's creepy vibes are haunting, Suck it and see has some really moving lyrics, AM is a tour de force and drinks from many different genres, TBHC needs full attention to be appreciated, and now The Car. As you say, I also wonder where will they move next?

when tbh&c first came out i was so surprised with how much their sound has changed, but i fell in love with that album as soon as i listened to it. given how tbh&c shocked a lot of people, it was so difficult to predict what the car was going to be like, but i knew it wasn’t going to disappoint. i can’t judge people for disliking their last 2 albums cause i understand people having a hard time accepting change. but i’m honestly just so proud of AM, seeing how far they have come and seeing how much they’ve changed, just doing what they feel like is right to them unapologetically is just so inspiring. i’m just so proud to say that they are my favourite band honestly and i cannot wait to see what they do next.

Whether I like their music or not, I'll always respect a band/artist who wants to try new stuff and don't care much about commercial success and aren't beholden to their original fans. I've seen bands/artists abandon their original fans to chase commercial success, which I don't respect. I respect chasing new artistic ventures which can leave fans behind as a byproduct

A lot of people didn't like when the Beatles changed their sound either but it's evolution. People grow and tastes change but the art remains unparalleled when it comes to AM. I feel absolutely blessed to have enjoyed all of their phases with them. AM has been the soundtrack to my life since 2007 and it's been a treat being able to grow with them. 🙏🌹
