I’ve seen people saying Jace is being hypocritical with his concerns about giving dragons to “mongrels”. But these concerns are 100% valid. It really makes me feel sorry for him because he is clearly far sighted enough (far more than his mother at least) to realise that Rhaenyras claim and by extension his own will always be contested. Jace recognises that when it comes down to it the only thing he will have to ensure he can stay on the throne when his mother dies is the raw power of a dragon. And now even that has been taken from him now that there are other Targaryen offspring with dragons. Meanwhile Rhaenyra seems either unable or unwilling to grapple with this reality and as a result of this her family will suffer greatly.

Don't be too hard on Jace. He may have a low opinion of "mongrels", but he (and especially the dragon keepers) made a very good point about allowing low born dragonseeds ride nukes without being true dragon lords. Dragon lords were raised to bond and respect the power of dragons from birth; moreover, these bonds soldified the high born Valyrian's hold on power for centuries. However, I felt it was Rhaenyra's exploitation of these 'mongrels' in the story that really set the stage for the grim fate of dragons in Westeros, not just the civil war. Jace's instincts on the matter was perfect, even though he only had his self interests in mind at the time.

She almost never engages in diplomacy or treats people with respect, is constantly rude to powerful people for no reason, completely irresponsible, unprepared for rule, hopelessly naive, and just generally does not think people have value unless they are family. According to the actress of Rhaenyra the entire Dragonseed subplot is the start of Rhaenyra's developement into thinking she is some sort of God-appointed savior of the world, the Song of Ice and Fire, and thus any "dangerous" decisions she takes is mandated by Heaven and will not fail, even if her bannermen, the dragonkeepers and family are against it. She even descrived Rhaenyra's speech to the Dragonseed as a "Charismatic cult leader speech". It would be intriguing taking this route to make Rhaenyra more villanous. The problem is, the impression the actress had on that entire subplot and how it was potrayed for the viewers dont match at all. Every action of Rhaenyra always had some sort of "heroic protagonist" soundtrack that dosent fit the supposed drammatic mistake of gifting nukes to random peasants.

I think what I'm enjoying so far about how this season has progressed is how they've shown the connection between despair/desperation and religiosity. The idea that someone who feels backed into a corner will feel compelled to trust in "higher powers" even if it's illogical or uncharacteristic of them. We already see that in the books with the slave followers of R'hllor, among other examples, and here in the show we see it with Alicent first and now Rhaenyra. Alicent is always up in that Sept because she's spiraling in guilt, and now Rhaenyra is seeing signs of divine support as she fears she can't win the war. Idk, I just think it's a neat idea to explore.

I always got the impression that while the Blackwoods come off as the good guys a lot, that GRRM wants us to read between the lines a little. Bloodraven, who is half Blackwood, was a dark character, even if he is generally on the side of our heroes (as far as we know). And the story of how houses Blackwood and Bracken became enemies really sounds like it's the Brackens that are telling it more true. It seems more likely that the Brackens were the kings in the region, when we know the Blackwoods are refugees fleeing from the Starks in the North. I'm glad it got more explicit in the show, though!

It seems as if a lot of Dragons sensory information relies on scent, not sight. Just their nostrils alone are as large or larger than their eyes. Also it could be that they roar to establish dominance as it demonstrates their ability to pump oxygen into their mouths to create hotter flames. So yelling at a dragon might actually work. It’s also probably the principle behind dragonbinding horns. Ulf definitely was helped by the scent of muck and goop he was basically covered in as he got a sniffspection from Silverwing. Addam probably smells a lot like Laenor from being a fisherman and commonly dealing with the ocean. Hugh is also a blacksmith so he’d smell like Ash and Smoke which the dragons particularly are fond of.

Regarding why Rhaenrya had the bastards with Harwin. Rhaenrya was under the impression that the only one whose opinion mattered on her succession to the thrones was her fathers and since he would never accept the idea that Rhaenrya would have bastards it did not matter. Plus she apparently thought that it was a well kept secret and by the time she figured out it was an open secret it was too late. Its also good that it was Jace who confronted her about it because he and his brothers were the ones who were screwed over the worst by that affair. Seriously his whole life people have whispered Strong behind his back and he knows it. I do love that Saera gets some posthumous revenge on her father by her bastard riding his dragon though I wonder how Hugh ended up in Westeros given that Saera never left Essos to my understanding. Something I've always liked about Jace is how aware he is of the political implications of his position and bastardy. It informs a lot about his character and motivates many of his traits and actions. We saw this in season 1 already, particularly when he struggled to learn Valyrian, but we also saw it in his attempts to present himself "royally" and as an active part of the small council this season. To this extent he comes across as kind of a perfectionist simply because he knows every mistake would be picked up on and used as evidence to undermine his claim if he sat the Iron Throne. In a way this parralels him with Aemond who also worked diligently to prove the Throne should be his. SPOILERS Frankly it makes me wish he ascended the throne, not just cuz I think he had potential as a king but also because he inevitably would have sought out mechanisms to legitimise himself, wether it be by legend or religion. It would've probably become a formative time for westeros just because he would've activly tried to define what Kingship means and is

Better episode but there were stuff I liked and disliked. 1 I love the way the Dragon masters up and quit. They're all like "This does not go with our ideals and job description, we quit!" I love their message that the dragons are the last of the magic of Old Valyria, this freehold that amazed others and all that's really left of their legacy is Valyrian steel and dragons. I love how they advocated that dragons are not just war tools and toys but rather beings who are representative of a legacy and culture that is slowly dying a painful death and that just because a person has Valyrian blood doesn't mean they deserve a dragon's loyalty and obedience. Love the scene with Ulf riding Silverwing. He just showed the pure horror of actually realizing your're riding a dragon transforming into pure joy and amazement that such an incredible thing is occuring to him. Great acting! 2. I love and dislike the whole Jace and Rhaenyra thing. On one hand I've been complaining that Rhaenyra isn't nearly given as much agency or making decisions of war, but they gave her Jace's storyline to find dragonseeds to her so finally she's doing something useful! But I do not like that they aren't given Jace a real plotline. I love though how finally we are seeing some layers to him when he confronts his mother about his bastardy. While he's never going to outwardly admit that he's a royal bastard and therefore not entitled to being an heir to the throne or a prince or a Velaryon, but he is confronting her with the mess she put him in by choosing to concieve her children with someone who was no Velaryon. Yes Laenor was gay and perhaps infertile, but the least she could have done was find someone of Valryian ancestry to be her sperm donor. I love how they showed Jace's agony with being a Targaryen who doesn't look like one. He and his full siblings looked like Harwin Strong, and it shows that he can't fully lie to himself and pretend he is a legitimate Velaryon-Targaryen when he is not. He is paying for her mistakes, and the fact that now people who in many ways are just like him (bastard Targaryens) get to claim a dragon will only further risks that nobody will accept him. I love how he's forcing his mother to see things in the long term like "Mother do you really think they will accept me as King? I am a bastard who looks like one, and even though I have a dragon, there are now other bastards with dragons." He is right though. This dragonseed idea will bite them in the butt later on.. 3. Hated the following: Seems like they don't know what to do with my beautiful girl Alicent a this point... Daemon being outsmarted by a kid of all things...Rhaena going to claim Sheepstealer (pissed about my girl Nettles)... I don't like how the trailer for the next episode hints that Helaena's suicide will be due to battle and Aemond... This is an example of bias for the Greens. The Suicide of Helaena was due to her mental deteroration and grief after Jaehaerys was killed and Maelor was later killed. She chose Maelor to die in "son for a son" and when he was spared, she could barely look at him. Her guilt for Maelor and grief for Jaehaerys caused her severe depression. If she committs suicide simply because of something Aemond orders her to do or battle... it will just be another thing for Black stans to blame on the Greens without actually knowing the real story. Maelor should have been there, I will never stop saying this. Her suicide and mental health issues started with the heinous actions of the Blacks. Her death will turn commoners against the Blacks demanding justice for beloved Queen Helaena. They probably won't even show that! It would be nice to get a Helaena and Dreamfyre moment, but not at the expense of the narrative. At this point, I don't mind the lack of action scenes with battles, but the first 4 seasons of GOT had little battles but all the dialogue and plot meant something and was entertaining. It all was perfectly developed to forward a plot. Great acting, I just want some good writing to go with it.

Interesting how the idea of pre ordination or right to the throne comes from different places. Hence, conflicting claims, hence war. It's very ironic too because Rhaenyra feels like her right is ordained by God even though her right comes from a mere man chosing her for biased reasons. Aegon's tie to and desire for the crown is heavily intertwined with the idea that this man, his father, did love him in the end while his actual claim is being born the eldest legitimate son of the king which is how right to the throne is actually pre ordained by God according to the system. No spoilers but this is beautifully emphasized in episode 8. Even with the dragon seeds, getting a dragon would feel like destiny to them. "The last rider of Vermithor was the greatest king Westeros had ever known. If I, Hugh, his bastard grandson, ride him too at a time when all the legitimate Targaryens are incompetent, does that make me the chosen one?"

Probably not relevant to the video, but would you say Rhaenyra's taste in lovers is a bit informed by Daemon's grooming? All of her paramours are older people more experienced than her in certain areas, and can do things she herself can't. Harwin and Criston were both older and combat capable. And then Mysaria is at least fifteen years older than her and more experienced in the subterfuge Rhaenyra needs to win the war. Thoughts? I would like to see a video about this, if it's not too much trouble.

I find it odd that Rhaenyra only now believes that her right to the throne is divine providence. What was the point of the white hart in season 1? What did it mean to her? And why never bring it up again?

I really did not like the Jace scene - He was the one with the idea of letting other people claiming dragons (bigger than the ones they have) - He and Rhenyra already discussed the bastard thing in season one if I recall correctly - He brings up the color of his hair... dude, you white. It was a great opportunity for the screen writers to signal: "yeah, the black cast had more significance than pure diversity quotas" which was controversial for some people at the beginning of the show (as I remember). I actually like that change because of the bastard conflict but they did not use it. - He called bastards mongrels then changes the topic about him being a bastard. It takes one to know one or what, Jace? :D BTW Jace is one of the most likable character in HOTD in my opinion, not the most interesting, but most likable.

He suggested nobles. In the book and ( in the show ) it is believed that bastards can't ride dragons because they are children of sin and the dragons won't favoure them because of this. That's why Viserys ordered to give Jace and Luke dragon eggs when the rumours about their parentage appeared - because everyone thought only legitimate "saint" children are able to ride dragons. By showing that bastards can claim dragons, Rhaenyra took away Jace's only "proof" that he's legitimate

Rhaenyra never gives Jace an answer on the issue of his bastardy because that would mean admitting that he has no claim to the throne. Notice how when Jace presses the issue, Rhaenyra avoids actually admitting the truth. And I seriously think Rhaena taking Nettles' role is the lesser evil compared to Daemon spending his final arc grooming another teenage girl. It also gives at least one of the Velaryon girls agency, which, as you complained in another video, they lacked. And as I have said before, Nettles sounds a little too YA for this franchise.
@ByTheStorm

I never exactly cared all that much for the legitimacy question when the showrunners tripped over themselves by making Rhaenys have silver hair instead of black. The bigger issue’s them lacking in their own education and coming off as posers. Which makes it even worse for them. It doesn’t seem all that wild for them who are themselves descended from the Vale to not have some genes reappear. Much like they’d presumably also have Baratheon genes in the mix as well. Them looking like they are makes sense. So the whole “seed is strong” deal was just eye rolling. Even if he’s not legitimate, if the people in power who have dragons say they are, then they are. Reality is irrelevant. On the other hand? They can easily make Nettles older to avoid that issue, since plenty of other characters had their ages changed. Not that it wouldn’t be weird for Daemon to go after yet another dubiously aged woman while having Rhaenyra. But it would be a bit better than going after someone who’d basically be the age of his grandchildren. I hope she’s still adapted because Nettles is quite interesting. One thing I was looking forward to seeing was this current two generations of Velaryons have Summer Islander descent and it factoring into the story. For a show that’s exploring themes like prejudice and questions the importance of blood purity? It’s odd that the fact they look completely different from other Valyrians never comes up whatsoever. I wouldn’t have much issues with black Velaryons if there was just even a single snippet of this prejudice of being of foreign descent that others like Littlefinger faced. On top of Corlys not being quite as pure as their Targaryen counterparts they’ve been intermarrying with for likely some years. It makes Daemon’s preference for Rhaenyra more poignant because while he likes his children, they’re still not as pure as he’d like them to be. Preferring someone who didn’t have Summer Islander blood period. I just wanted the irony or hypocrisy of it being pointed out since they themselves are from Arryns. I’ve never quite understood why some people like the change when the underlying narrative about Valyrians and their culture seems like an argument against white supremacy and being far too attached to an idealized view of the past like fascism promoted. I feel like much of that message is just lost if a faction of the family doesn’t reflect that narrative without being commented on. Having Nettles be the other side of the coin and see how looking different from the rest of Westeros and her Valyrian ancestors would affect her view on being a Dragonseed.

@@ByTheStorm on the other hand, if they made her older people would probably be saying they're sanitizing the relationship. Plus, it means Daemon has a good reason to refuse Rhaenyra's orders other than protecting a side -piece.

I think you misheard. Viserys and Daemon were Baelon's sons, not Jaeherys' and Hugh says they were his mother's brothers. That means that like Ulf, Hugh's mom was Baelon's bastard. I was so confused by the dragonkeepers not wanting to serve Rhaenyra because: 1) First of all you are a serf slave monk in a medieval society bound to her house.IT IS ENGRAINED INTO YOUR BRAIN YOUR OPINION DOES NOT MATTER AND SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN. 2.) If they care soooo much about Valyria shouldnt they care more about Val ancestry/blood instead of some random westerosi titles?? 3.)How is giving dragons to people with DRAGON BLOOD al desecration of Valyria and its values?? They are literal killing machines ment for conquest and destruction, how do they think Aegon conquered westeros, with using them as a cultural landmark to visit?? 4.)Their purpose is literqlly to do war, why would some cultish zookeepers think they have the right to not help and thereby HINDER their GOD-lord because they dont like how the said God lord uses THEIR OWN PROPERTY. It was such an illusion breaking modern union moment uggghhnnghh. I wish we could have spread the dragon taming into at least two episodes maybe instead of getting "Lock them all into a deathtrap room so they can die all at once becuae we need to save on teh cgi. Oh and one of the dragons is tamed instantly while the other is buy one get pne for free..." Also I like the self righteous Rhaenyra its just that once again it came out of nowhere. We had great establishing of this in season 1 (the hunt/propehcy) but THIS season she has been doing the opposite (seeing everybody has their own conviction/perspective w Daemon/Mysaria/Alicent) for a whole season and then suddenly on penultimate episode she is like "well a dragon was claimed, guess its the Gods" after a whole season of "men are stupid because of their preconceptions" And its so weird they wanna keep her nice af so that they can do a plot twist "villain" moment next season (episode 4 I would say 🙄) Like are they seriously telling us she is SO MENTAL ALREADY she gives a heartwarming speech amongst commoners and then without further explanation (lore/basic Valyrian) LOCKS THEM IN A DEATHTRAP UNDERGROUND ROOM AND LETS DRAGON GO AT THEM ALL AT ONCE?! How about doing it outside or idk, letting them try ONE BY ONE so that the dragon is psyched af? They wanted to save on time/cgi but made it look completely irresponsible and rushed. And I do love most parts of the show, just this and one of the crown princesses randomly walking into a territory full of wildcats and wildlings without supervision kinda irks me the wrong way

They are outside the king's authority, they seem to be more like monks, they have more power and authority, and it seems like it's like a cult-like organization like the Faceless Men who are governed by rules, more oriental style rules, they serve dragons who are like gods to them, so there's not much inconsistency here. What they don't like is that it's people outside the Targaryens who make these claims, people who haven't entered into the Valyrian tradition and culture, that's why they feel so offended.
@amorojaz27

These guys are basically priests and Andals being offered dragons is a sacrilege by their standards. They probably weren't happy about Addam getting Seasmoke because he's clearly not pure Valyrian, but I'm guessing they would let it slide because Seasmoke is the one who took initiative(assuming Rhaenyra bothered to explain that). Now Rhaenyra is offering sacred animals to peasants who know little and less of Valyrian magic and culture. I understand that in the book it was claimed only "pure" children could claim dragons. Rhaenyra is directly challenging the order of things by doing this. And as to why she handled Vermithor's claiming the way she did, I think she took the wrong lesson from Seasmoke choosing Addam. She probably thought Vermithor would look at the crowd, find someone he liked, and it would all end nice. Unfortunately, Vermithor is one of the most vicious dragons that ever lived, and clearly doesn't like visitors. Another thing to keep in mind is that Vermithor has been hibernating for over one hundred years. No one has actually seen him in action in their lifetime. Rhaenyra likely thought the stories of his ferocity were exaggerated. As to why she didn't let any of the Dragon seeds leave the cave, she was probably thinking if she let any of them leave, then she'd never get any of them back in there.
