If you listen closely when Chris is sitting with the other family you can hear part of a song Tichina Arnold wrote and recorded as a possible theme song for the show playing from the TV. Tichina submitted it when they show went to series but Ali LeRoi and Chris Rock already had another theme they wanted (the one they ended up using for the entire run). They did keep the "Everybody Hates Chris" hook you hear whenever the episodes fade to commercial or end.

I wish I stood up to my grandmother like Chris. She and my mother had a very toxic relationship stemming from my grandma being very critical of her (just visualize not just Rochelle and Maxine, but also Debra and her mother-in-law on "Everybody Loves Raymond"). I can recall my mom yelling at my grandma when I was about eight years old. I was too young to understand what was going on, but eventually learned that my grandma was criticizing my mom to a few friends during a social event at home, "She can't keep a clean house" and so forth in front of my mom. But the nail in the coffin was in my mid-20s when my mother got into a relationship with a jobless alcoholic who she let move in with her after his mother (who he lived with) died. No pun intended. I wasn't too fond of him myself, as I didn't like that he was living off of her, on top of the fact that he referred to my mother as his "wife." My grandma constantly told me that she never imagined my mother would end up with a guy like him. In my mom's defense, she raised me singlehandedly from birth to 18. Sadly, when I was 17, she met a man (whom she became his fiancee and let move in with her all within about two weeks of meeting him) who turned out to be a con artist trying to swindle her. Six and a half years later, she met the alcoholic whom she initially rejected several times. So I guess she figured she's not getting any younger and should lower her standards, especially since it turned out that he (unlike the swindler) genuinely loved my mom and treated her like a queen. Anyway, I just nodded at my grandma's ranting, out of respect for her. Besides, what can I say when I didn't like him either. Eight years after their first date, he died of liver cancer, and my grandmother (who never smoked) ironically died of lung cancer four years later. My mom was hysterical when he died, particularly when we went to the hospital to see him in a sedated state. But when we went to visit my grandma in that same condition, it was me who was hysterical, while my mom kept her composure 100%. She didn't cry at the funeral, either, and her all-black attire looked more like she was going out on a date, e.g. dressed to impress. To this day, I wonder if this was because of either of the following: 1. how badly my grandma treated my mom's boyfriend (as well as her own daughter), on top of the fact that my grandma never came to visit him in the hospital, and basically looked at his death as a burden lifted off of my mom. 2. my mom was secretly mourning and therefore being strong for me. 3. losing a spouse is arguably worse than losing a parent. On a side note, in my entire lifetime, I hardly ever saw my mom and grandma hug or kiss.

I loved Chris in this episode! But I’m also glad Rochelle finally stood up to her obnoxious mother ! Maxine reminds me of my mother in some ways. She’s obnoxious and inconsiderate in some ways, but not like Maxine. I remember when I was little I wrote something in my journal in frustration, then my mom saw me and made me give her my journal so she can read it right in front of me. I can be difficult myself, but she always tells my dad to shut up whenever they disagree on something, most of the time he’s right, it’s just she doesn’t want to admit to it. And just like a while ago, when I made a mistake when calling in a food delivery, she told me to shut up twice in a mean tone because she was mad at me about trying to end the call early . As I tried to leave, I gave her a look of anger because I felt like she was being vicious she told me to sit down and started to threaten me if I didn’t behave. She accuses me of taking her stuff all the time as well. And whenever I or anyone else in the family wears something she thinks looks crazy, she saids “ You’re not going outside with me dressed like that ! “ 😡
