I was watching "Joan of Arc" starring Ingrid Bergman last night. In one scene Joan, called the "Maid of Orleans", approaches a group of soldiers. When they see her you hear them say, "The maid! The maid! The maid! The maid!" At that point I started singing, "Everybody ought to have a maid...."...and that brought me here. :)

It's the best musical to movie translation ever! Not only is Zero Mostel absolutely hysterical, but the scenery is amazingly realistic (it's as dirty and sleazy as Rome truly was), and they cut out all the mediocre songs, leaving only the really good ones. I love this movie!

Poppa was Stationed at Camp Lejeune when I first saw this movie shortly after its release in Oct 1967 I was 8 at the time and watch this movie twice every year in commemoration to the timeline of its release....Poppa worked at the Jacksonville Drive In as a second hand job while he was in the Marine Corps and was a Projectionist there.... I can't began to tell you what an awesome time that was for us five kids. When everyone left afterwards the movie, we were cut loose on the 5 acre lot for the hour it took Poppa to close up, free popcorn and drinks till we couldn't take in another bite.... Zero Mostel was one of the best, I just miss these guys, you could actually be humored with out all the filthy dialogue and set with your children and enjoy the zaniness of these colorful characters.

We went a little overboard when we did this show...and it was hilarious! Whenever there was a commotion scene I would always shout "My leg!" From backstage, even if there was no one getting hurt on stage. "She died of an illness contracted while still on Crete." "What illness?" "The plague!" *Everyone Screams and Runs Away* "My leg!"

Best bit in a brilliant film. Just a the clip misses out Horden's dialogue with the "maid" just before the song. "...but you must know something." "Yes?" "Though you may have my body, you shall never have my heart." "Well you can't have everything..." :)

saw this when it first came out and still love it - Michael Hordern should be better know - everything from Sink the Bismarck to Taming of the Shrew and a wonderful radio turn as Gandalf in BBC's LOTR. Wonderful and versatile actor. My only fear in this correct age is that this song - and this musical - may be banished for a while
