From director Martha Coolidge: "Our Special FX guy became an expert on popcorn (which, by the way, weighs 2 pounds per cubic foot). In order to build the exploding house, he had to design all kinds of hydraulic systems to move the popcorn inside. To get that much popcorn, we had to make half of it as we couldn’t buy that much popcorn from commercial companies in that short a period of time. We popped 40 tons ourselves on the lot for 6 weeks with huge poppers outside so the whole lot smelled like popcorn. We bought another 100 tons with a six week advanced order. When we shot on location, we stored the popcorn in 38 40-foot tractor-trailer trucks parked up the road. It took more than a day to clean up the site to do take two, so we had to go shoot other scenes in between. It was also amazing to watch. I’ll never forget tons of popcorn gushing out of that house.”

This is a lost art. No one would do this today, you'd just CGI that. Now I'm not going to be an old fart and say the old ways are better and all CGI is shit...movies evolve, that's how it is. But it does give you an appreciation for how much work really went into a movie, and the lengths people would go to get an amazing show in the age before you could just get animators to do it for you.
@jerseyjoyride1316

@@dahitmannwell I think it really shows in the actors expressions that the popcorn is real. CGI there's always those looks that don't appear to be real, because the actor can't make us believe that the CGI is real. To me, the genuine smiles in this scene let us know that the actors are really enjoying what's going on around them.

I will be praying for you, if you haven't found it already there is a much deeper purpose to life, Jesus will accept us no matter where we've been or what we've done if we just turn to him and ask. I know depression is a terrible thing but if you do already have Jesus then know that he has a purpose and reason and remember that some of the most prominent leaders of the Christian faith suffered terribly in their lives. May God give you the strength to stand up through it, even through medical assistance and may he give you the comfort of purpose to your life and security of spending eternal life with him. Hit me up if you feel like God is trying to talk to you about this and know that I care about you as a fellow person and will do everything I can to be there for you🤗🤗

Rumor has it after this event Kent left school right before graduation and joined a monastery. The others never told him it wasn’t really God. Chris Knight graduated and got the job but was fired some months later for hitting on the CEOs hot daughter. He ended up working at a Best Buy where he tells everyone he built a mega laser weapon. No one believes him. Mitch sadly became what Chris tried so hard to not become. He cracked but only because without the mega laser he had no purpose. He moved into Laszlo’s old basement place. He’s also tried to enter a Frito Lays contest even though there hasn’t been one since they stopped it after Laszlo won 31.9 percent of the prizes. Jordan graduated but started her own business manufacturing beds that have a book holder that can turn the pages to a book you’re reading. It will also turn off your lamp for you. She also will make sweaters for anyone…still based on her brother’s size. She also still hasn’t slept. Laszlo divorced Sherry and lost 50% of the 31.9 percent of his Frito Lay prizes in the settlement. She was cheating on him with a student at Pacific Tech. Laszlo is trying to move back into his old basement apartment. Mitch won’t let him. Ick, the Asian guy, started his own laboratory but sadly died when in one of his ice experiments the evaporation gas did end up exploding. RIP Ick Professor Hathaway was fired from Pacific Tech and after a congressional investigation was prosecuted but given a 3 years probation. He found a job teaching at a local junior where he was fired for sleeping with one of his students.

Fun-fact: every bit of the popcorn was real and taken from farms which were unable to sell excess that season. The farmers received a good compensation, all given free movie passes, and even had signs made which said “As seen in “Real Genius”-all of which received a boost in business the following season by mounting them on the signs on the road by their farms. Made up, but fun.

Always thought it was classy to do cast credits alphabetically or by order of appearance.

I truly believe kids where much more happier in the 70s and the 80s than today. I was lucky to be a kid and a teenager in the 80s we had good shows, movies & awesome 70s and 80, cartoons, and Rock On Awesome Music to help us get through are problems and are relationships with are girlfriends and are backups. And got to ride my bikes any were and go to the mall and play video games and watch movies. Man those where the days.

The sound track of this movie is priceless. One of my faves: "I'm falling" and "The One"
