I don't think she's capable of admitting she was exploited because she literally has no idea what a normal, healthy childhood looks like. She was surrounded by kids who went through the same trials she did and parents who were all in on it. As Swoop said, she's a product. Products are rebranded as "new" and "different" all the time even when the exact same product existed previously. This is no different. Character histories are retconned all the time in TV, movies, and comics; Jojo is being treated the same way. What we're seeing *is* the authentic Jojo. When the fame train eventually stops, she's going to fall apart because she's been trained to be a marketing machine to sell exactly 1 product; herself.
@PosaPunto

Wow you explained it perfectly. I couldn't describe what I was feeling about these new celebrities like there is something very disturbing and unnatural about it. It's because they're like a product, they are advertised like a product, people talk about them like a product, when they talk about themselves they talk as if they're a product, advertising themselves. Not like a celebrity. Nothing to add here.

I think you make an excellent point. Jojo's behavior isn't great, and she SHOULD know better, but with how she was raised, how could she? I think the real villains are the adults that guided her on this path, her mother, Abby or whatever her name is from that Dance show, and everyone else not letting her experience the world outside this showbiz/consumerism bubble.
@ang8491

You most definitely have to put a lot of blame on her mother. Look at all the other girls that grew up with her. Majority of them stepped back from the fame and pressure. Jojo is the only one from that show who's mother continued to push her harder for her brand, while you have Nia, Maddie, Mackenzie etc still working under fame but not to this extreme.
@tessiepinkman
4 ай бұрын
@@ang8491 Yeap, her mother is a menace. But, then again, so are all the other adults in her life. Why do people think that SHE thinks it's normal for HER to hang out with adults when she was just a kid? Why do people think that SHE thinks it's normal for adults to act inappropriately towards children? It's because the adults in HER life has made it clear that it IS _"normal"._ Everything that she's learned, from the moment she was born, is so very, very wrong. I hope she'll seek out _(and find)_ some serious help someday, because she is broken. *Deeply and profoundly broken.* I hope she breaks free from all the horrific people in her life that has turned her into this product, this HORRIBLE product. She seems, and probably IS, emotionally stunted and that's something that can't be healed - not fully. My own emotional growth was stunted when I went through several really violent and traumatic r-pes and other physical and mental abuse when I was a teenager, and it's taken until now, when I am 34 years old and have gone through 2 sessions *every* week for 4 years straight with a psychologist, to make me somewhat emotionally mature. I still have a long way to go, but I'm getting there. I see much of my _"old"_ self in Jojo's ways to express herself _(my EMOTIONAL self, not anything else, she and I are polar oposites)._ She turns 21 any day now, but she acts like a 12-14 year old. That could very well be a trauma response, OR it may be because she never needed to evolve further because everyone's always been catering to her needs. If you ask me personally, I believe it's a bit of both in her case. Though *by far* the biggest thing, and what I hope most of all for her, is that after she's gone through some HARD therapy and some *serious* introspection, she'll realize how SHE herself also have perpetuated this atmosphere and cycle of abuse and then tries her FUCKING BEST to make amends, because that's really all she can do. Her mother and a lot of other adults in her life should be in prison.

Yeah see this is why I have a hard time with it. It takes a long time to break free from grooming and when you do you realize you don't have an identity... it's hard for me to say she's abusive because that's literally all she knows. And it's what you have to tell yourself to survive or you'd unalive yourself...

For Jojo to publicly admit that she was exploited as a child, it would mean that she would have to reconsider her relationship with her own mother. Seeing how close they are and how much power her mother has over Jojo's career and life in general, well, I don't see that happening any time soon. She can't even stop to process what has happened to her
Yeah. Like, I hold some serious hatred for Rosario Dawson backing her abusive, violent monster-of-a-landlord mother at age _forty_ but Jojo is only 20. She has time, and deserves time, in my opinion, to process the fact she's in a hierarchy of abuse before I do more than condemn specific actions and pan her character broadly. If she never gets there, I'll hold it against her a few years down the line the way I do Dawson, but for the meanwhile... I just hope she gets herself sorted before she does something truly unforgivable

@a.r.mproductions5616 the thing with Abby or any teacher for that matter is that those critiques that she gave are important for her to tell her students, as that is vital for them to be the best they can be and to be successful, but how Abby gave those critiques is what is unacceptable. Instead of telling these things to work on that she told the kids, instead of telling them as feedback which shows you care about the student, she told it like she was bullying and criticizing them, and judging, and literally just yelled at them all the time and that is where it went wrong. It is important that pay attention to each thing your student is doing, especially in something like dance, and tell your student and critique them, but doing it meanly and yelling at them isn't teaching them anything; if she wanted them to fix it a particular way, she should have shown them because that is what a teacher is for. A teacher's job is to help their students be the best they can be, correct them, and show them how they should correct their "flaws" and correct what they need to work them. And body shaming them and talking bad about their body parts is not at all an acceptable thing for a teacher to do; yes it may be truth and the child should know or whatever, but again, that is the not the way it should be said and she also needs to understand that she can't possibly except young growing girls who are going to be facing puberty etc. eventually to have perfect dancer bodies, as their bodies are first working on becoming adult grown-up bodies and are constantly changing into the body shape etc that is proper for them and also the bodies she wants is what professional ballet and dance people who have been trained and done this crap for a long time, and that is not what these girls were. It is appalling to see her treat these kids this way; she may have thought she was doing it to make her kids the best they can be but there are other ways to do it; yes she prepared them for the real world and all like she said her goal was, by being strict not giving in having strict rules teaching them to not show their emotions out in a competition in front of audiences etc etc. but you don't need to be mean for it; there are ways to do this that doesn't need to contain bullying the kid; big difference between being strict and outright mean. Abby just clearly was not trained in how to be a teacher; great at what she does, producing great dancers or whatever she wants to say, but she clearly has no experience working with kids because a teacher doesn't belittle her students and destroy their self esteeem and make them feel bad about themselves.

Someone pointed out that other rebrands like Miley Cyrus and Olivia Rodrigo worked partially because they had grown with their audience so their rebrand was showing their fans that “hey you’ve grown up and so have I” but Jojo never had an audience her age to grow up with. On Dance Moms her fans were adults who watch the show and when she left she started marketing to young children. She has the difficult job of having to create a new fan base from scratch but she keeps alienating demographics that could be her fans. Her whole rebrand is how she’s an adult making music for adults so children aren’t going to be her new fans, she’s openly supports people like James Charles and Colleen so anyone who knows what they did don’t want to associate with her, her “gay pop” comments has made the entire queer community despise her. Who does she have left to get support from?

She could’ve grown with her audience but she doesn’t care about marketing an organic experience she wants what she wants when she wants it and up until the karma era she’s always gotten it so why should she think this would be any different. She is truly a child in an adult body trying to cosplay what she thinks it means to be grown up the saddest part is that no one ever helped her learn that on her own and her mother will go along with anything to grow her own back account.

I’m a trained therapist with experience in working with intensive attachment trauma in kids… here’s my take on why it may be hard for Jojo to conceptualize her relationship with Abby/with the industry as an abusive one. For some of the girls, the harm came in large part because they had a very different experience with Abby in their early childhood, before the show. The change in her as the spotlight obviously pushed her to a literal breakdown was traumatic for them in a similar way as a drastic negative change in a primary caregiver. That change creates soooo much additional anxiety on top of the cumulative traumas and stressors from the other inherently stressful and likely exploitative experiences of that specific dance moms environment. Jojo (to be clear, moreso her mother) entered into the environment after the show had been established, so to her, it was always framed as a professional relationship vs a different sort of community mentor/almost close to familial relationship that the other girls seemed to have with her. This matters for a few reasons, but the impact of jojos experience being filtered through that different narrative likely means that the symptoms (or if not symptoms than maybe cues) will show up less so in jojos relationship with herself and her immediate support network the way more typical attachment trauma of this sort would (Maddie’s, Chloe’s, for instance…. Theirs is primarily showing up in other anxiety and depression and burn out experiences type things) and will show up more obviously in how she projects her expectations of the sorts of relationships that other people should have with their workplace. This inability to recognize “professional collaborations with Shane Dawson” as additional exploitation makes more sense with that framework too of a disrupted relationship with her career vs her perception of what grooming is, which seems to be that it is a disrupted relationship with primary adult figures and with self. It also Illustrates how complex the entanglement between the harm she experienced as a child and the ways that’s causing her to, whether intentionally or not, cause further harm to others. I do feel a lot of sympathy towards her because I think she, as does everyone, deserves a more peaceful relationship with herself and the world around her… and also part of being an adult who wants to safely be in community with others is recognizing what wounds, traumas, blind spots etc one may have and working to heal those… especially when she is taking on any sort of attempted mentorship or professional supervising role over children.

I’m the same exact age of Jojo (difference of 2 weeks), so to think at the time I was taking my first steps, someone my same age was taking her first dance classes is just wild. Even the normal age being minimum 18 months is too low like I think it should be 3-5 (I was in ballet at 3-4 and definitely threw a fit everyday I was NOT ready for it).

@@SweetforS part of me understands it in the sense of… since her mom owned the studio, it’s like she’s bringing her kid with her to work, not necessarily going out of her way to get her into class. The owners of the studio I grew up at did the same with their kids & nieces/nephews. Definitely not defending Jessa’s choices AT ALL, it’s just that that part of the story doesn’t seem surprising to me. Now the fact that she was putting her in COMPETITIONS is CRAZY

I dunno. My two year old has loved to dance since she was able to stand. We're looking into dance classes because it is honestly her favorite activity. To be clear, I have no aspirations to exploit this, we're only considering classes because we think she would have a good time, and if teacher/coach anything less than compassionate toward my child or expected things that weren't developmentally appropriate, we'd be out immediately.

Did NOT expect to Gabbi Hannah dropping straight facts on this video Edit: I wanna add, until Jojo learns that her trauma was actually bad, I don't think she will change. She truly believes all that abuse was good because it ended with her having fame and money so she continued to do it to her dancers thinking she was going to do the same for them. She's in a bubble surrounded by people who tell her everythings fine. It's very possible that she's incredibly emotionally stunted and it could take her years to understand fully what happened to her. *none of this is to excuse how she treated those girls. On the note of the video of Jojo as a 2 year old: When I was 2, I participated in a beauty contest. According to my mom, she had been having a day at the mall with 2 year old me and my 9 year old brother when she noticed a little beauty pageant going on. My mom liked to dress me up at that age, so I was wearing a cute fluffy dress, and my mom thought "why not, seems cute". Apparently I, wearing a white cotton and lace dress amongst the other 2 year old girls wearing sparkly pageant costumes, toddled out on stage, almost cried, and walked away with a 2nd place trophy. Somehow. My mom says she never considered signing me up for another because that incident alone showed her how exploitative and toxic that scene was. "No little girl should have her face slathered in makeup and parade around wearing sparkly mini-skirts!" - My mom.

But above all else, we weren't FORCED to do it and my mom wasn't militant about practicing. She was of the belief that things like that are supposed to be light hearted fun. The reason she joined the pageant was because she thought it was supposed to be basically a fun parade of cute little girls in cute dresses 😭 she was high key horrified by what they're actually like.

I could've sued over and over for misdiagnosed my mother, drunk nurses, and so many other episodes that have now made me so scared of drs. True story! If you ever want my full story, please let me know. I've Journaled it all and I'm not the only victim of Geisinger medical system! Very poor care and they herd you like cattle, just a number, never ever caring about the patient. I would love swoop to deep dive this hospital that monopolized all the other local hospitals. It's disgusting! I'm soon changing hospitals even if it's out of my way by 40 minutes or more. They've almost killed my mother, brother and me. Not to mention a nurse that came into ER while drunk and playing golf. She admitted she was drunk and they didn't care. Speech slurred, an open syringe left on my mom's bed I had to point out. She was unable to work ER in her condition. I later in life due to my illnesses ended up in rehab thanks to the hospital who pushed drugs on me only to double dip by sending me to rehab they owned. Talk about frustration. I had a 2 year shoulder injury. They also falsely told me mom was dying and they tried everything only to realize they had the wrong patient and mother. I only brought her into the ER to have her eyes checked, then to be told she was dying. After they realized the mistake, the nurse was quickly removed. I never recovered from the ptsd that the hospital caused me. They're the most disfunction hospital I've ever come crossed. I absolutely have plenty to sue them and how they messed up my mental state, made me scared and I now have no faith in this hospital at all. They constantly make the front page of our local newspaper and sued over and over. I'm now mentally unwell, scared, paranoid and have no faith in the drs properly taking care of Mr. My mother passed away and I blame them and the way they blew her off as important. My grandchildren are devastated as I am. I'm off the subject a bit but I wish someone would expose this hospital and finally make them responsible! 🤬🤨🤔🙄🧐😳✌🏻🙄🎬

Cuz verbal ab**e is just as awful as physical, but I endeared both behind closed doors. You never really know what a child is going thru behind closed doors, even if the parent seems like an amazing one. Ugh ..May God bless those who also went thru it, or still currently are.. there’s help out there, you do not and should NOT ever have to suffer in silence. My older brother tried acting when they needed an extra in something that i was filming for and he hated it so my parents didnt even make him show up for day 2 of the shoot. With him only being an extra the casting people didnt care and even if they did my parents weren't going to force it. I don’t understand why she still keeps the forehead-out tied up hairstyle if she actually wants to separate herself from her old kid friendly persona. Like she might not have the big colorful bows anymore, but the forehead-forward look is one of her most recognizable features, at least to me. Makes it so when she has her “badass” dark outfits on, she looks like a kid in her parent’s clothing🤧

I am completely on your side, my only caveat is, if it's to make sure it's not a today problem and to teach accountability. As a teen I regularly wanted to quit orchestra because I was a teenager and did not feel like it. But I made a commitment and the money was spend so I had to do it till summer break and I was so happy I did and signed up again after summer. On the other hand when we got a new choir instructor whom I disliked from the first day (her music taste was horrible) it was a few weeks till summer and I made the same deal with my mom. I made a commitment and if I still wanted to quit in a few weeks when summer starts I could, which I did. If I would have disliked her for a good reason and not just her taste I could have quit immediately. That I know because in a different choir I got screamed at by the teacher and came home and told my mom I'm quitting because of it and she was absolutely fine it. So believe the child but also teach responsibility and dead lines, but honour them and don't move the goal post!

Child labor laws need to catch up with modern times. Between the exploitation of kids on reality TV, Tik Tok, KZitem, and similar sites, the family vloggers, and the parents humiliating their children for views, we need new laws protecting kids from their parents who are profiting off them! I feel like there should be a neutral advocate in charge who does not profit in any way from the kids. Someone who can override parents like this and actually look out for the best interest of the child. There should be laws protecting kids from parents on social media (i.e. Ruby Franke). So many adults are taking advantage of kids in that industry - the only way to protect them is with someone who doesn't benefit financially responsible.

But it was definitely a choice, I begged my folks to sign me up, but there were kids in my dance classes who weren't there by choice all the way through high school. This is probably a controversial opinion but i think it's ok for parents to push younger kids maybe under 13 into certain things as long as the parents have good intentions. Like i was a very very shy kid in a family of extroverts. I'd much rather read than see the sun when i was little lol. My dad didn't force it but he heavily encouraged me to do sports. I think was a really good thing for my social skills. Of course a 13 still isn't an adult who can consent, but I think at that age you do need to start respecting their autonomy and boundaries. And hopefully you can have productive conversations with a 13 year old instead of just forcing them to do things lol

I also have fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and chronic migraine disease. We, as human beings, are not meant to experience illness or pain on a chronic level. I absolutely love your outfit Swoop!! I would also like to say that my biggest issue with Jojo is her unwillingness to confront her own shortcomings when it comes to her social circle and media literacy. I have no problem with a 20 year old star not knowing the history of music or fully comprehending the actions of the people around her. But the doubling down when she does see she’s wrong is what really makes me lose sympathy and patience for her. Also she’s now an adult and that means she is now in charge of her own actions and the amount of forgiveness people will have for mistakes drops dramatically when stars go from child to adult stars.

I did competitive dance for 7 years, from age 9-16. I knew people who did it /almost/ as young as JoJo. I think the question needs to be if the kid themself wants to do it, and if they are able to back out if it’s something they aren’t interested in anymore within reason. For example, I told my mom at 16 I didn’t want to compete anymore. She told me that after I finished this competitive season that we had paid for, I could quit. But that I needed to finish the season. If I had been in severe distress, I know she would have let me back out earlier. She also had no monetary incentive to keep me there, all scholarships I had won were discounts for future competitions and intensives. I don’t think we will ever know if JoJo really wanted to continue, and if she really wanted to compete at 2 years old. But that’s just my take on it.

Well this teacher would SCREAM at her family members when i was there learning to play, and it was scary! It wasn't directed at me ever, thankfully, but even mom (who was there witnessing the whole thing), eventually was like, "i know you like the piano but this teacher shouldn't be yelling like this in front of her students." Yes i never learned piano past that but, I'm glad my mom intervened.

1:20:00 As a person who lives with MS, arthritis and foraminal stenosis at age 47 and continues to wake up and work as a NYC public school teacher every day, thank you.

There's an interview clip of Jojo talking about how Abby's yelling caused her to self harm by pulling out her hair, which is why she has a bald spot. It's sad how she thought being treated like that was a good thing and thinks she's doing them a favour by perpetuating the abuse she went through

Not quite what she said. JoJo had a stress rash in that spot which she itched all the time which killed the hair in that spot.

The gabby Hanna bit jumpscared me. Heartbreaking when the worst person you know is making great points.

this was posted exactly as I was getting off of a phone call with my lawyer about my 12 year long legal battle over a 3x-surgeried spine injury. your affirmation could not have been better timed; it literally made me cry. your work and affirmations are so important to so many like me. I hope you yourself are listening to your affirmations as well. ypu deserve them just as much as we do. thank you for this and for everything always.

Hope all works out for you. I got a spine injury 13 years ago. Now I have spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and no discs in my lumbar. But I have a feeling that's small potatoes compared to your battle. Best to you ❤❤❤
