With the recent flight cancelation fiascos, it would be great if YT travel influencers posted a survey asking their subs to rank the most popular travel insurance companies based on claims theyve made. It would be nice to see which company has emerged as a front-runner.

I've actually thought about this, but ran into a couple things that made me hesitate. 1) So often I see folks recommending insurance...that they never used. This we could of course filter for. 2) Often the disappointment with insurance is around someone thinking something was covered that wasn't because they didn't understand the policy. Asking about experiences that people had where they did feel they had coverage, but where the insurance company didn't act as they should have would be better, but still relies on some trust that someone isn't just misunderstanding, and would skew results as we'd likely still see the most popular insurers represented. In other words, I'd like to see this happen, but there are a lot of considerations I'd need to think through.

My friend went on a cruise and bought the standard insurance policy from the cruise line. She fell and broke her arm in the cabin. They did xrays, put her in a sling, gave her meds and told her to get off the ship and go home, good luck.... So she found out the hard way that their 'insurance' was ONLY to reimburse the cost of the cruise. She also got absolutely NO help with figuring out how to get home, either!! What a very SORRY way to treat someone that is injured and in extreme pain!! And with the very crappy wifi we had a extremely hard time getting information and getting the flights and taxi and all the stuff she needed to get back home. I would say get your insurance from a 3rd party, NOT the cruise line, and make sure you have medivac coverage!!

Sorry that happened to your friend. The key is knowing what's covered. I think that's the biggest takeaway I want folks to have from this video. Any policy is useless if it doesn't cover what you expect it to.

Agree. My boyfriend had to be Medivaced out of Egypt. Luckily Virgin holiday insurance he had covered it. Otherwise around £40k it would have cost.

We had to argue with them because they tried to say it was pre condition not covered but they finally agreed to after many phone calls

Never judge any travel insurance broker on how good they are until you have to unfortunately make a claim, that is the true test. Read any claim reviews for the company you're considering and disregard reviews on how easy it was to fill in the forms on line or how cheap it was.

Fantastic advice. We often see people praising insurance providers they've never had to actually use. +1

I've got news for you out of a list of 10 top travel insurance companies none of the have stellar reviews especially when you look at the BBB reviews. You can see Allianz one of the top in the business have 4.5 stars on trust pilot and then 1.5 stars on BBB. It is really a shot in the dark. The only company that had exceptional reviews was MedJet but they only do medical evacuation services no other forms of insurance. I had seen review with Allianz with people waiting 4 to 6 months for reimbursement.

Key word: “good” travel agent. Unfortunately, I haven’t found one after using 4 agents. So I do my own extensive research so that I am not relying on my TA to help me entirely.

Finding a good agent can be tough, it's true. We have a post with some tips: www.cruisehabit.com/should-i-use-travel-agent-or-book-directly-cruise-line We often recommend referrals from people you trust that have had good service from their agent. Avoid the "my cousin's neighbor does this part time to get discounts" folks, for sure. This is also why we tell people to avoid booking with whichever agent is willing to rebate the most commission to pile on the onboard credit.

Thank you for your informative video. I recently went on an Antartica cruise and the trip was interrupted or delayed because of weather conditions (we had to wait until a storm passed before our charter flight would fly and had a 1 day delay and then we had to return half a day early in order to avoid a storm. I thought our credit card's trip interruption policy would cover it and filed a claim. My claim was denied because the trip interruption was due to "weather" and weather was not one of the allowed reasons they covered. What kind of insurance or credit card do you recommend that would cover this?

If a cruise line issues a voucher for future travel due to passenger cancellation, is this deducted from trip insurance reimbursement? I am not sure whether to get 75% or 50% CFAR. Enjoyed this video!

This is a great question. There are elements of policies that cover only what is not being otherwise reimbursed, and depending on why/when you cancel, a line may indeed issue future cruise credit. I'd need to defer to the fine print in the individual policy you're looking at, as it's going to come down to exactly how they word things (which will obviously depend on the insurer and potentially policy type). Sorry I can't give a broader or more helpful answer. I'll do some digging to see if I observe a trend across certain companies that I can share.

@@CruiseHabit for CF International, CFAR reimburses for “unused, non-cancellable, forfeited, prepaid deposits…”. In this case, I believe a cruise line credit or voucher offsets a claim because that part of the fare is not forfeited.

I purchased a ticket out to SC 2 years ago I purchased the ticket the day before the flight and canceled the next morning . Come to find out I received travel credit and not a refund . I have to go through AIG to file a claim for a loss

I did read something on their policies of what is deemed as a “loss” and any fare that was issued a refund via “travel credit” that went unused is considered loss. Unused is what it was considered in their loss policies

I got a complimentary cruise, but had to pay admin fees of $140 and gov’t fees and taxes of $191 totaling $331. They added a $45 travel insurance, which I’m assuming it only covers those fees since I didn’t pay for the cruise. At this point, do I even need insurance.

What do you want to protect against? If you don't know that, then you can't know if you need insurance or which policy is right for you. There is medical coverage, evacuation coverage, baggage loss or delay coverage, and so much more than just the cost of the cruise itself.

Great video. I heard about Allianz and did some research what I found was many of the top companies have terrible BBB reviews but I think that in the case of BBB reviews by the time people review on the BBB it's usually when they are at their wits end, but when you read the bad reviews you find out all of the exclusions and things that can go wrong when filing your claim, so that can be helpful in knowing good questions to ask. There was one travel company where the company kept referring to the underwriter and how it was the underwriter which was a totally different company that had certain limitations. I think the company's name was something like TinLeg. There was one fantastic service but it was only for Med evacuating called Med Jet. All excellent reviews. If I had extra money to spend or if I had a preexisting condition would probably get that plus regular insurance as they hook you up with a personal nurse to fly you back and pay for all travel expenses to have you flown back. But I have really been struggling with these other bigger companies like travelex and allianz as none of them have excellent reviews all across the board as in BBB, google and trust pilot.

It seems many folks make big assumptions on what is covered, which leads to them being upset in a bad circumstance. Understandable, but it also makes it hard to separate those type of problems from issues where insurance companies made things difficult. Our experience was positive, but I'm sure that's not universal, either. Further, to your point, people tend to leave reviews when upset - not when satisfied.

What if I’m just not comfortable traveling to my destination city, because of the political climate at the time?
@CruiseHabit

Generally speaking, you'd need to rely on "cancel for any reason" policies at that point - which cost much more, and usually only reimburse you for a portion of the cost of the trip. In other words, this would qualify as you deciding to cancel, not the trip being cancelled for a covered reason. Now, if there is _political unrest_ , then it's worth noting that some policies exclude this as a cancellation reason, while others allow it - however if it were of reasonable significance you'd likely see the cruise line (and potentially other common carriers) offer alternatives (or completely cancel).

Be damn sure you are traveling on set date, otherwise you will lose the upfront cost travel insurance payment $200-400. It is not transferable to another future cruise date.

Good tip. Some insurance companies will allow you to transfer within X days of purchase, but not all/many. This is another example of where annual policies and premium credit card protection can be valuable.
