Great analysis. This movie hit hard for me because I was exactly in Joy's place at one point in my life. Nihilist, pessimistic, and eventually suicidal because nothing in the world had meaning. Then I got the help I needed, and started to find meaning in the small things around me. Now I try to be kind, and help people through volunteer work. I came to terms with the fact that the universe may be aimless and meaningless... but that's ok because I can find my own meaning through my actions. That's basically the same conclusion Evelyn reached, and the filmmakers did a wonderful job of showing that journey. I'd highly recommend this film to anyone who's going through an existential crisis.

Thank you so much for sharing. Having gone through many similar struggles of my own I completely agree. The movie is really great and delivers a very important message in a fun, creative and very emotional way.

Asians Americans that grew up in America like to see their past struggles and issues displayed on screen. Asian Americans that came when they were adults like to see whatever makes Asians look better in the eyes of Americans right here and right now.

Just watching footage from the movie I don't even wanna see it despite being an Asian. I'll stick to her Hong Kong martial arts films with beautiful costumes and cool personalities.

i avoided putting action sequences in the footage used for this since it wouldnt really match my arguments relating to the movies philosophical themes, but if costumes and cool action scenes are something you're looking for, this has a lot of those too.

Lol op didnt even describe why he disliked it. Does he find the costume design to be absurd? Thats the point. Does he this its basic? Guess well never know

@@nelsondnazariotorres8732 I will let you know. According to reviews on Yahoo Japan, Japanese people in Japan who don't care about Asian representation in Hollywood absolutely hated this movie and looked at Chinese immigrants in the US in a negative light as a result. Chinese food is considered cheap food in Japan, Korea and the US as opposed to Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia where most of the richest people are of Chinese descent and Chinese restaurants are where families go to celebrate special occasions eating shark's fin soup, Peking duck, roasted sucking pig, and other expensive delicacies. Cheap Chinese dishes have become part of the local street food and not considered Chinese food anymore, unlike in Japan, Korea, and the US like I mentioned. And look at Evelyn's clothes and hair, her laundromat which is even worse than current laundromats where you see lots of Hispanic laborers, their tax issues, the resentment of the daughter toward her Chinese heritage.

If you watch historical series from Hong Kong (mainland China went through the Cultural Revolution under communism and just opened up the country in the late 1990s after a period of cleansing and "new indoctrination"), you will see how developed ancient China was, the clothing, the accessories, manners, teachings and values. China was way more developed as a civilization than Japan and Korea. China is the way it is today because of western superpowers and the rule of the Manchus that took over China and kinda prevented advancement in lots of areas for fear of uprising by the Chinese Han majority, and also the civil war in China and communism. You have to ask why Chinese immigrants in Southeast Asia that migrated out of China before the Cultural Revolution became rich and have a lot of influence economically in Southeast Asia. What were their values? Do their descendants resent Chinese culture?
