Back at the very end of 2017 (the last day in fact), my partner and I decided to take the plunge and replace our first-generation Honda Insight hybrid with a BMW i3 REx, turning our family garage into an (almost) all-electric affair. While Rebecca, my 1969 Morris Minor still awaits electric conversion (and is off the road), the BMW i3 REx joined our first-generation, 2003 Toyota RAV4 EV as main transportation. Purchased from a dealership, it came with an extended warranty.
In addition to getting the Walton-Elliott family further off petrol, it also added another electric car to the Transport Evolved "staff car" fleet -- alongside the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan LEAF driven as daily drivers by Nikki and 'Amerikate' back in Portland.
As the newest car we've ever owned (I've traditionally purchased older classic cars as my main vehicles) we assumed the BMW i3 RExwould give us many miles of carefree driving, rapid charging on long-distance trips and (where rapid charging wasn't available) the range-extender to help us get to where we were going.
But in the past year, our ownership experience has been anything but rosy -- and we're very glad we got an extended warranty.
