Banks' song about his orderly life was meant to demonstrate A) how oblivious he was to his home (because he was working himself into an early grave providing for that wretched family) and B) how when he was there to run things up until the coming of Mary Poppins, things seemed to go smoothly because _he made them go smoothly_ when he was there. And thanks to her, he's now able to see how things are when he's not controlling them.
@Doctor_Odin

It was essentially enlightening the parents with a heavy focus on the father (because tradition / relatability) the dangers of distancing yourself from your offspring and what happens when you do. With the song being a means to demonstrate his gullibility in still believing that he can control them while being a stranger to them. The the end result of the movie has them all happy content and orderly. when he stopped being a stranger to his kids.

In case anyone cares, I recently saw the play Mary Poppins and the situation with Mr. Banks is much better. At the behest of his kids he gives a loan to a worker instead of another banker and might get fired because it could cost the bank millions but it turns out the "banker" was a con man and he ended up making them money. For anyone watching this, if you have never heard of Peter Ellenshaw and if you enjoy art or love the Mary Poppins film, do yourself a favour and do a quick Google search for Peter Ellenshaw and Disney matte paintings. Ellenshaw was a genius in the artworks he made over the years, including film matte backgrounds. In Mary Poppins, the background scenes he painted included the English park background at the film beginning, side and top painted extensions to the interior bank scene at 10:41, basically the entirety of the lamp lit London park scene that Mr Banks walks through on his way to the bank after the earlier 'run on the bank' scene, virtually the entirety of Admiral Boom's house and rooftop with only a small part of this being physical props for the two actors to stand on/interact with. Peter Ellenshaw's work was, and is, incredible.

Most of your nitpicking was about pacing, and honestly... THE MOVIE NEEDED IT. The pacing without those long scenes would make the movie exausting and too quick, long scenes like that helps you rest and take what happened a few moments ago, especialy the Feed the birds song and Mr. Banks's long walk, since before those scenes things were hectic and chaotic. This video should be 15 seconds long and that 15 seconds should be for the intro to the video because this movie is practically perfect in every way

Mary Poppins wasn't there for the kids. She was there for the parents.

Good rule of thumb. Most of the time you don't really have bad kids. You have parents who don't know how to help their kids.

Agreed. That's how you can easily tell whether someone understood the premise of this movie or not.

I remember liking Bedknobs and Broomsticks much more than Mary Poppins as a kid.

What about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? These three were my childhood! They all have good actors/actresses and catchy songs. I literally just sang Feed the Birds to some kids I was babysitting; so yeah I'm one of those ppl that absolutely adores all 3 movies...

Totally agree. Mary Poppins never appealed to me when I was a young'un, but I absolutely LOVED Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

You know how in some videos, like this one, he says “id remove all the sins if...” well I seriously wish a movie would have such a huge plot twist and he’ll say that line and 2 seconds later it happens, that would be amazing
