Hey Mike, my wife daily drives a 1999 1500 GMC Yukon that we bought off a farmer with only second and third gear working, leaking oil, leaking power steering fluid, and leaking coolant, collapsed suspension and other problems. It drove 800 miles in that state no issues up into the rocky mountains in Colorado. I spent a summer doing all the basic repairs on it and now it runs like a champ in 9 month long winters above 9000 ft altitude and has only needed oil changes since. Put a cherry bomb muffler on it, you will love it! These trucks are tanks, check out powerstop for a new brake kit, it will completely change the feel of the pedal over the stock or old/worn feel. We can relate to this project for sure!

Good that you are looking out for the youngsters and trying to educate them on Rust issues. To tell them in the clearest way.... The most important places to look for rust are the Suspension points like where the Control arms bolt to the frame, Spring perches and pockets (at the frame) and the Body Mounts. That TAHOE looks great for being a PA truck all it's life. If you plan on keeping and fixing up this truck you should replace all the rubber bushings. I saw one of the control arm bushings was dry rotted (as expected). I'm sure you can buy a Complete bushing kit for the truck. Really looking forward to seeing future content Mike. Congrats!

I put 2 inch blocks in the back and it’s sitting pretty level, I’m interested to see what all you do to the Tahoe, hopefully it will give me more ideas of things to do to my truck. Your information is off by quite a bit. Your body style "blazer" as you call it started in 1992, not 1989. The old K5 was used through 1991. Blazer was 92-94. 2 door Tahoe ran 95-99. Tahoe has a totally different interior than the Blazer. 96-99 are the best ones to get IMO since the vortec 350 is alot better than the older TBI units.

Ok I strongly disagree with you saying vortecs are alot better than a tbi. Almost every single 350 vortec I've ever owned takes a shit around 250 thousand. I've had multiple tbi's and yeah they don't make great power but they are extremely reliable every tbi 350 I've owned has had 300 to 400 thousand miles on the body and the original 350 and I know other guys here in town that have had the same luck with a tbi 350. Hell this ole guy vern I know has a 90 1500 with over 500 thousand on the original motor because he's 70 somethin and babies the shit out of it. The only reason a vortec is better is the power and that is it but reliability goes to the tbi hands down

Love this much more than the McLaren content. My parents bought me a 95 GMC Yukon GT (the GMC version of this truck) for HS graduation and that’s what I drove through college back in 98. I did all kinds of things to that truck and back in the day, having an IFS front suspension was odd (vs a live axle) so lift kits were crazy expensive. We turned it into a pretty fun truck though with a Dick Cepek 6” lift and 35’s. I remember having one of the first DVD and screens throughout in the area. The engine is slow but does what it needs to do and as you can tell by the EPA estimates on the sticker, this was during a time that gas was never an issue. I remember filling up for .88 cents a gallon with this truck and we all drove ALOT. If I had one today, I’d LS1 swap it in a heartbeat. Nothing crazy, but that would really liven it up. Best of luck with it! That’s a great deal!

*_REALLY_* looking forward to this project!❤️👍❤️ My current daily is an 07 Tahoe (281k on the clock👍) but have owned several 90s GMC/Chev Suburbans throughout the years & customized ~ wrenched on them. Excuse my ignorance but I’m curious about your “inspections” in PA. I don’t live in, nor have I ever lived in, a state that requires them. So you’re telling me that the rust on the body/rockers will cause you to _FAIL_ ?!?? 😳😳 If this is true... that’s *crazy!* 🤔🤯🤯

Hey Mike that's just an overflow tank for the radiator. It has no pressure to it. Just make sure the radiator is full and fill that tank to where it is marked "Full". No biggie! Good buy on the Tahoe 👍!! I can't wait to see what you do with it, this should be a fun project!!🇺🇸

The 5.7 and the 5.3 were great motors. Still are to this day. Of course there’s a lot more computer to modern motors. I do like that you hit on the point in that they are super easy to work on. A simple KZitem video answers most any questions. Anyone with a wrench and a pair of hands can wrench on this thing. They’re great motors to learn on.

I've had SBC since late 80's, never had one burn coolant, ever. I know the newer 07-08 5.3l had some coolant issues. The late 90's did have coolant issues, wasnt really to do with motor design, GM used that crappy Dexcool which ate out the intake gaskets...... and Mike adds more Dexclog.

one of the first trucks that I can remember from my very young childhood was a 2000 chevy silverado 3500, same body style as this, "obs", it was a 4 door long bed, with a 454, it was white, and it was super clean! I wish I had that truck today, so many memories in that thing, it will forever be my favorite body style, and it is the reason I like chevy so much.
