Not sure why my comment is having a bit of a renaissance over a year later, but thankfully I've managed to escape The Walking Dead after season 9 ended. I think the comic finally coming to an end over the summer of 2019 might have helped. I've been a fan of the comic for ages, so that (better) version of the story coming to an end helped me feel ready to let go of the TV show. Maybe I wanted me relationship with this story to end on a positive note because issue 193 was great, and I hadn't enjoyed the show in years.

Orange is the New Black is a victim of it's own popularity/greed. The show should've only lasted about three seasons or so, long enough to cover Piper's sentence. If it did it would join the ranks of brilliant shows that ended too soon and could've told a complete and coherent story about Piper's time in prison. Instead they decided that it's so popular it should be 7-8 seasons which would be fine if they structured it a little better (like not have an entire season set during a few days), like maybe each season focusing on a handful of characters and their arcs. I'm halfway through this latest season and I don't care if I never watch another episode. I miss a lot of the old characters like Boo and Maritza, (though I can appreciate a forced shift in the dynamic like pairing Flaca with Cindy) I'm not invested anymore, which is a far cry from when I was literally cheering when Vee got her comeuppance in season 2.

She’s sort of the “everyman” white, middle class, late 20s and with a few bad mistakes when she was young. But I think she’s way overstayed her welcome. I was so disappointed with how they treated Laverne Cox's character. Finally a trans woman NOT played by a cis man (The Danish Girl and Transparent, I'm looking at you). But they made her role smaller and smaller after they had told us her story. Which was that she paid for her transition with credit card fraud. The transition was her story, and once it was told, she could go to SHU and then quickly sent to max without participating in the riot. And then they just wrote her off the show as an early release, instead of doing anything new with her. I wanted her to not be a token character, but she ended up being just that. Disappointing.

Something I also don't like is the representation of the bisexual community. When Piper's mom found out she dated a girl her response was "you were a lesbian". Some people are very uneducated though but the fact that Piper answered "at the time" is like saying that you can only be straight or gay, but it's based on who you're dating at the time. They never use the term "bisexual" and it's 100% okay to not label yourself but the fact that they labeled it "lesbian at the time" is bad representation. Either no labels at all or the right label

Felicia Astvik Her mom's suppose to be a woman coming from a time where they thought, key word here, it was one way or the other rather than both which makes her ignorance understandable. Piper on the other hand really did think it was just a one time thing making her phrasing of 'at the time' understandable. There are a lot of problems with OitNB, but this isn't one of them lol Saying "no label at all or the right label" doesn't make sense in this case imo as it wasn't done in an offensive manner so much as it was to display how "stereotypically normal" she and her family were at the start of the series. If, say, they called Lavern Cox's character a tranny rather than a woman then I think that stance would make sense. They make it clear through her being genuinly in love with both genders along with the fact her whole arc was growing as a person that's more open minded than her parents. No need to add he screaming "I'M BISEXUAL" from the top of a cliff too haha

I am still on the fence about it though considering the fact a good majority of the characters in the show are also sexually active(which apparently is something that happens within real prisons) and somewhat unhinged within the prison, Alex could have been saying that because she was burned by her love of Piper (depending on when that line was said), and again the whole "I was a lesbian before" line was said because she was in denial of her bisexuality. I'm curious how you and OP, or anyone else, would have liked the show to address her sexuality? Personally I like it when a show just sorta provides shows rather than tells something about a person like the fact Piper was torn between Alex and her fiancee (though I can understand if someone saw that as her choosing between being straight or gay). Are you guys more context people or sit down and talk about it peeps?

The iconic death of Season 4 was the downfall of the show because I think it signified that the show really doesn't have a full grasp on the representation/struggles of these characters and they do a really piss poor job at covering heavy-weighted issues. Too much of Season 5 was dedicated to "Oh, the cop feels so bad about killing the inmate...we should feel bad for him." The show continued to focus on Piper after her arc was done so she felt like the most boring character, lots of rehashed plots of certain characters, and a complete Flanderization in some cases. It's become incredibly aimless, boring, and mismatched in tone to the extreme. Season 6 showed the worst because it stripped away a lot of the cast (Which is OITNB's biggest asset) and the flexible setting where a lot of these plots could work. OITNB I think wants to morph into a more realistic prison story when it never really was in the first place. They say a Season 7 is in development but it really needs to end.

I agree after they killed off Poussey I didn't bother with the show anymore because it felt like nothing but misery porn like Sarah said. And yeah the whole, "feel bad for the cops" message the show kept pushing was always really gross in my opinion. Even ignoring how tone-deaf it is considering all the crap you hear about cops in the news since the show began, it doesn't fit in well with the narrative of the show as well. If this is a show about exposing the inhumane and abusive conditions inmates often suffer at the hands of cops, then the cops should be the last characters we should be forced to feel sympathy for, especially when they kill someone in a way that directly and intentionally parallels the real-life killing of someone.

Bailey did not murder Poussey. He committed manslaughter. He was unaware that he suffocating her and was untrained and unfortunately killed someone. Bailey should have been properly trained and MCC did not live up to that. The point of the show after season 2 is to show the indecency and cruelty of the private prison industry. It’s not about putting him, it’s about realizing the systemic issues of private prisons and how they affect more than just the prisoners. Also, Piper’s arc is not at all over. She’s the protagonist and her arc will end in season 7 upon releasing her memoir like the real-life Piper and then go on to become a prison reform activist, probably to show he use her privilege and connections to take down MCC.

Absolutely, they do these dramatic things but don't follow through on the arc. Pousseys death being an avoidable accident is horrifyingly real & they could have had the inmates complaint & take over create real change. They could have related inmate death to the real world & hilight how not following procedure & being shit at your job has a real negative impact on people, including death! They could have acknowledged the mistake & had a proper investigation with no victim blaming, not just a couple of staff members feeling regretful & apologizing. Recently in my local hospital a disabled person died because they had a developmental delay & found it hard to communicate verbally, once they eventually realized they had a perforated bowel, it was too late to save her life. Oneo isolated incident is very bad but once you look at the scale of the problem it is atrocious & preventable. Pousseys death was the perfect microcosm to show the macrocosm but it's almost like every event in oitnb is an isolated one & rarely grows roots with its surroundings.

I feel like so many people miss the point of following that young guard who killed Poussey. You weren't meant to totally forgive him and say "Hey he's a pretty good guy I guess we'll just call a mulligan on the whole manslaughter thing". It was meant to show that the whole issue is a complex one, and that the under-prepared staff of these for-profit prisons can also be victims in some ways. He clearly wasn't a bad guy, but his story also didn't end with everyone forgiving him. That scene where he goes to Poussey's fathers house is a great scene, because it shows how on a human level there are no winners in the messed up overcrowded prison system.

my rule is if a show hasn't sparked out by its 5th season, it's a fucking miracle. That's what made Breaking Bad so spectacular - they knew what they wanted to do from Day 1, they didn't over-extend themselves, and each season got progressively better as a result. Most other shows need to learn to quit while they're ahead.

Yeah, Americans shows always seem to go on wayyy too long. People complain about British shows only having 1-3 seasons but it's better to quit while it's still good. Watching good shows die slowly and painfully with like 10 seasons isn't fun, but it's a common thing with Americans shows: they either cancel way too early or wayyy too late.

All extremely valid points. Even if I still enjoy the show, it is definitely not without it's flaws. I liked this season as a standalone watch, but it tonally really does not fit the idea of 'going to max.' Like you said, they built it up to much and blew their load too soon by introducing the new guards in S4, and the subsequent riot in S5. Nothing in max would be able to really live up to previous encounters, like Maria torturing Piper when she snitches, Poussey's death, MCC's sadistic COs, etc. Carol and Barb were fun baddies and a decent representation of stunted emotional growth as a result of being trapped in the prison system before full mental development (I mean, they literally kill each other over a fucking story from decades ago,) but in the scheme of villains on the show, they were pretty much the most harmless and lighthearted big bads of the show's entire run. That all being said, I'll still watch next season.

That's kinda the point of the show, that the prison system is something that makes people more violent, FORCES them to be more violent to survive. The entire show is about criticizing the systemic abuses and failure of the prison system, it even tries to provide alternatives at the end with things like discussion of reformative justice or showing how education program can really affect someone for the better. It's a bit of an easy cope out to just want to portray people who are in prison "by mistake" because it doesn't really question the prison system itself it would just say that the wrong people are there. It's a lot more interesting to show how the system itself is fertile ground for antisocial behaviour, is inhumane and doesn't help anyone.

Her death just really put me off & none of the other storylines/characters were enough to keep me watching. At this point I think it's time Piper gets released & the show ends. Poussey’s death was more powerful because of the direction her character was going. Killing a character when they’re halfway through a character arc is one of the best and most effective ways to make a death have an impact. The fact that she was a black lesbian had literally nothing to do with it.
@bloodywanker49
5 жыл бұрын
Poussey being a Black lesbian has everything to do with it??? She was literally killed off to parallel the death of Eric Garner, a Black man who died by getting suffocated by the police. It was especially upsetting for Black fans in particular because killing Poussey in a fashion so similar to Garner's real-life death so soon after it happened (a year or two at most) felt more exploitative then something meant for an impactful story. Sure you can enjoy her death or whatever, but for many people, it felt excessive and most definitely could have been handled better after the fact (the whole "feel bad for the cop that killed her!" arc was tone-deaf in every way possible).

Sakura Dropps That’s the entire point. You’re supposed to be upset when Poussey died. Viewers have a connection with Poussey that most did not have to Eric Garner. I'm a criminal justice graduate so when OITNB came out I was ecstatic! I really loved the first season, and the second season was chilling in a way that made me want to continue but the third season was so boring to me I never finished it. I found the show to be amazing and groundbreaking in the first season, but I felt like there was an arc problem, let alone a guard problem. The guards always felt nasty and like weak characters, and it always bothered me that there weren't more creepy guards, and more guards that were women or poc. Being a prison guard is a low paying, not to fun, sometimes thankless job. The people who would be choosing these jobs would also be living in rural areas, and probably are not college educated. This would be so interesting to see ignorant guards developing empathy, and becoming friends with the inmates without alterior motives. Not all guards are good people, and of course there are disgusting, sadistic guards who abuse their power and sometimes even kill or assault inmates. But there's also guards who actually like the people they work with, and it would've been nice to see a guard being nice to the inmates in the show without them being either fired, have a romantic relationship with an inmate, or screw them over in the future. TL;DR OITNB got tiring because it felt like all the guards wanted to see the inmates burn, and characters you liked never got a fucking break, or if they did, the guard had to "toughen up" in some annoying way so we could watch the inmates suffer again.

I love your videos but I gotta disagree with a lot of the things you said. I felt that the stakes were raised just in a more subtle and realistic way (taystee getting life, everyone betraying each other in the first few episodes, the guards wanting revenge on some inmates because they think they killed one of their own). Rather than having a guard make an inmate eat a baby mouse for no other reason than to get the audience to hate the guard. Instead of the guards being cruel in a brutal way most of them were cruel in a subtle way. The fact that the guards don’t care so much that they made a game out of the inmates life’s is pretty nerve racking especially with a gang war going on. Another thing is I don’t feel like the fact that the result of taystee’s trial was predictable takes away from the impact it has. The point is that deep down you know she can’t win this which is what makes her hopefulness when she decides to go to trail so heartbreaking. The realism on this show isn’t supposed to be a surprise it’s supposed to be realistic. Also the tone as been switching from drama to comedy since season 1 so idk. Edit: I also felt that carol and barb were pretty intimidating because of how sociopathic there flashback was. They weren’t as good as vee but they were still entertaining to watch.

This video is the first of hers where I’ve almost outright disagreed with everything she said. I’m genuinely confused...did we watch the same show? Was this season perfect? Of course not. Was it as good as the older seasons? No. But it did go darker with themes of prison injustice, opioid epidemic, and other real world issues. That is the direction the show has been headed for some time so I don’t get the sudden backlash from people saying that it’s “not like it used to be.” Shows evolve, things change. Aside from the blunder that is season 5, events have happened organically within the world and characters react to those events as they should. It may be frustrating at times, and certain things were annoying (looking at you badison), but overall it’s a season that follows the story that has been set up, and is setting up for its (supposedly) final season 7. Btw, carol and barb were some of my favorite parts of the season

I feel like this is what happens when you base a show off of a book that only covered a small time period in someone’s life and can only provide so much material. The writers clearly ran out of ideas or just didn’t know what to do once they had moved away from the original story in the book. I think they probably felt a lot of pressure from Netflix to keep it going because $$$. But it’s okay for a show to only last a few seasons. Things never seem to work out when shows just keep churning out seasons with no end game in mind. I stopped watching sound season three and even then it was getting stale to me. I was surprised to know it made it to a sixth season.
@seansmith4730

agreed! i read the book in an afternoon, how the hell can you make 6 seasons out of that!? it's bound to get over the top ridiculous and stale when the writers just have nothing real left to go on. I enjoyed the book, Piper didn't strike me as the dense, annoying mess she is in the show. her ex plays a small but of course important part in the book which in the show gets dragged out to a whole new relationship. Her ruminations on prison, women in prison, class, race and injustices within all of those things were great to read since you never really get that perspective in media. the show yes has these issues but i felt like a lot of the time they were put in to get people to watch the show, not start a constructive dialogue on those things. if that makes sense?

OITNB is yet another sad example of a show that just doesn't know when to bow out. I've slowly been losing interest as the years have gone by; the last time I tried to actually catch up ended up a couple of episodes into the 5th season, and I just couldn't bring myself to watch any further. It's a shame, since I actually liked the hell out of this show for the first 3ish seasons, and still think those earlier episodes hold up more than okay. I personally was always the most invested in Piper and her story, even though I don't exactly find her likable in any sense, but I still think she was an interesting character and it was fascinating to see her internal struggles. The more exhausted and repetitive her arc got , the less interested I found myself in the story in general. And by this point I just wish and pray the showrunners would just give it up and let OITNB go. So, so many goods shows over the years have been ruined to a point where there isn't any shred of actual value left when the people running them just won't let them die. OITNB isn't quite at that point just yet, but as far as I'm concerned it is certainly headed that way, and fast.

Around 14:46 you mentioned that it’s not likely that prisoners to have a radio show but actually there is a very popular podcast inside a prison called ear hustle and they are actually actually allowed to do it

THANK YOU for bringing up the change of the show when they went to Max. like in the earlier seasons it was built up to be this living hell that no one wanted to get sent to and then when they actually went everyone was just kind of chillin and it made no sense. also I always thought it was weird that they dedicated and ENTIRE SEASON to the riot. I was not expecting that shit and how the ending seemed so uncomplete despite there being 7 wholeass seasons. most people justify the ending by saying "that's how life works you get what you get" but when almost every character ends up with a shitty arc or bad/uncomplete end, that's just unsatisfying writing (they really did do Red and Daya wroooonngg) Edit: I have a really unpopular dislike towards what Alex and Piper's realationship turned out to be and Piper as a character in general but since this is a comment on a video from August 2018 I'm not gonna go into that

To be fair... inmates generally don't get happy endings. At least not in my country. I worked at the public defenders office and it was both heartbreaking and frustrating. To me it would've been unrealistic and a little insulting if the show gave everyone happy endings. I get that the bait and switch is annoyng but that's exactly how it feels in real life. You think that person finally caught a break and that they're going to be the exception... and then they screw up or the system screws up and they end up back where they started or MUCH worse. =( I agree with all of the other points though! AMAZING video!

I wonder how many of these people have actually read about the prison system experiences not just in the US but in different countries. I've known some stories personally that are downright outrageous and I feel like many people here complaining the show was too grim and therefore unreal are either too naive or got not a single idea of what prison and post prison life is.

I have a soft spot for this show because it was my lesbian awakening, and I credit it with making me an abolitionist because it was my first time seeing what prison life is like and various issues like deportation, racial disparities in imprisonment, etc. However, I did find the tonal shift pretty alarming, especially in season 5 onwards when it got really heavy and a lot less funny. :/

I was hoping the fantasy inmate thing had a bigger impact. When Luschek put the information up on the internet, I was really waiting and hoping for it to get out, go viral, whatever. But no, only one inmate found out and was thrown into SHU. Entirely disappointing. Maybe next season, but for some reason I doubt it.

I read the book first ... so I just couldn’t accept the liberties the show runners took .., until second season it was ok but once I started to watch 3rd season that’s when I had to stop ... haven’t been curious since ... they escalated Piper’s adventures to a fictional levels .., just couldn’t anymore

It really did feel like Max was just regular prison, it didn't feel any more intense. I mean, when I heard they were going to Max I had visions of these relatively nice characters being thrown in cells with female versions of the characters from Oz and it just wasn't. I'm not saying I wanted a main character shived every week because it is meant to be a comedy/drama but... I mean... maybe just one in the first episode to show that this is actually a very different kind of jail than the one that we're used to, it might've helped justify the whole idea that this is meant to be a scary place to be.

You got Netflix to watch _Orange Is the New Black_ and the show terribly disappoints you more and more? Oh, my. 😯 I hope maybe _Stranger Things_ or some other Netflix show might help mitigate the disappointment somewhat. 😞

I agree with your assessment, Sarah! It might be a case of the show writers running out of ideas, or what was once a novelty is struggling to stay fresh and relevant. Like "Supernatural", the characters have become more unlikable than they were intended to be on the onset of the premise. It's been going on for a little too long at this stage.

It's too bad the success of this show got to the heads of the show-runners that they are still willing to keep it going instead of putting out of it's misery already. They should have quit while they were ahead.

Yeah I bailed at the season finale when the riot began just because I didn't care about the outcomes by then. My favorite character weirdly wound up being Pensatucky though. She's somewhat pathetic but also from up to where I saw was getting a half decent redemption arc and more development than I expected. A sad but interesting character that reminds me of my home state of Florida. Also the panty selling thing was weird and I just kept having flashbacks to the That 70s Show clip where panties are raining down on Eric as he cheers because that's pretty much what Piper had become.

I kept watching after Poussey for Taystee only. But I feel like killing Poussey in the way they did and then sentencing Taystee to life in prison/the death penalty is just too much. While they're trying (i guess...) to raise awareness for what prison is like, this doesn't DO anything for the cause. Like, if you tell the audience that even with BLM behind you, you're still gonna spend your life behind bars, what's the point? It falls flat, and imo it's disrespectful to the audience bc this shit happens to real people & those real people need hope, not misery porn made off their situation.

The part that gets me the most about the seasons/episodes post-riot is the fact that it was all for nothing. I can’t tell if I love the writers for writing such an emotional conclusion that is fairly true to life, or if I hate them for never letting any of the characters, especially Taystee and her group, get their time in the sun, getting to achieve all these demands. They never get that.

So this probably lacks realism, but I thought the point of the inmates' lives getting "easier" as they went from minimum to maximum was to show just how close the Litchfield crew actually were to each other in spite of all the fights and issues they all seemed to have with one another. There are always glimpses throughout the show post-prison riot that show the OG inmates basically holding each other in high regard. At worst, the unspoken respect between them is apparent. Furthermore, it showed just how crucial familiarity was in an environment that made the inmates feel so vulnerable.
