As a long-time fan of the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG, my main problem with all of the weapons in 2077 is that they all use cased ammunition. Any gun that has an animation for ejecting spent cartridges is not in line with canon. Even as early as 2020, all mass-market firearms in the cyberpunk universe use caseless munitions. In fact, brass-cased bullets are no longer even mass produced anymore, and have to be custom made, at double the cost of normal ammunition of the same caliber. It's also kind of a shame that 2077 only has one polymer one-shot, that being the slaught-o-matic. In 2020, there are like 7 different options for disposable plastic guns in the books, and even a single-use "shotgun" that's just a shell in a fiberglass tube with a striking mechanism and a trigger.It, understandably, has a chance of just exploding in your hands and sending you off to your ripperdoc to chip a set of used soviet cyber arms because you can't afford western cybernetics.
@Maykenzie
4 ай бұрын
Lots of nuance of the old RPG was lost in the translation into a videogame sadly. My cope for the loss of caseless ammunition is that the setting as of 2077 is technically post-post-apocalypse so maybe people went back to using old antiquated relics to kill each other for a while, but that still makes no sense because then the high tech guns should be old designs and the metal pieces of crap welded together should be current. It makes zero sense why a megacorp like Arasaka for example would have modern conventional rifles like the masamune when smart-linking exists, and has now been upgraded from a literal smart neural link between your weapon and your body to aim your gun for you like an aimbot to literal smart magic gyrojet bullets that can somehow change their trajectory in mid air and home into targets, which is its own brand of stupid.
@CrizzyEyes
3 ай бұрын
That shotgun rule is actually another huge mistake. Shotgun ammunition is relatively low-pressure compared to rifle ammunition. You can make a safe and functional shotgun out of two pipes and a screw (for a firing pin). The idea of a company using custom fiberglass tooling to make such a shotgun when they could just use two pipes that fit inside of each other and a handle on the outer pipe is quite stupid.

I mean that's in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a post war environment in an independent nation, meaning they likely have regressed slightly in terms of infrastructure and supply chains, especially for the average individual. I could see two main reasons, one being lore friendly and the other being game design related; either the resources needed for caseless ammo aren't abundant enough to equip the general population with enough ammunition, whereas they might have access to the brass needed for casings. Or Caseless ammo just didn't fit the theme of cyberpunk 2077, I've heard around that maximum mike told the design team that "their guns were too futuristic" so they might have taken that advice too close to heart without any extra info to go off of.

lore-wise the lack of a unified attachment system kinda makes sense - every corp would want people to use their own proprietary system and so you'd be dealing with a lot of bulky and inefficient adapters to use attachments with guns they're not intended for. They'd also want to nickel-and-dime customers for everything which is why many guns don't have something like an integrated red-dot. Of course this hypothesis gets blown up pretty quickly when looking at something like the Nue (a Tsunami firearm), which needs a special adapter to use a sight like the Hyakume (a Tsunami sight).

I will say, its not a canon thing, but it makes perfect sense why there wouldn't be a universal rail system for attachements. If you can think of any sort of anti consumer, absolutely abusive pratcice, its probably happening in Cyberpunk. So, every gun has unique, proprietary attachments that only work with that specific model. Of course its not reflected in gameplay because that would be a nightmare, but i wouldn't put it past any of those corpos to do that.

For all the impracticality I actually love Cyberpunk's gun design. It goes for the "rule of cool" in way that is still somewhat plausible in that most of the designs would actually function or are based on antiquated, obscure designs that a nerd like me can heavily appreciate. They could have easily gone the route of just slapping random greebles on a generic magic box that vaguely looks like a sci-fi gun, but it looks like they actually tried to research different mechanisms and manufacturing techniques to make things somewhat believable

For the Lexington, the complaint about the cyclic rate doesn't really hold up when you look at guns like the Vz.61 which has a mechanism in it to mechanically reduce the cyclic rate to make the gun more practical to use. The argument that the only way to slow down the fire rate on a machine pistol is to add weight to the bolt, assumes that it's a straight blowback mechanism, which not all machine pistols are. Otherwise good vid 👌

as much as some of these guns may be nonsensical or even completely nonfunctional, i think the idea of CDPR looking at how guns from as far back as world war 1 worked, taking those design concepts and saying "how would this look and work in the future?" is awesome. one of the reasons i absolutely adore sci-fi but cant really get into medieval/fantasy is because i like looking at something and being able to picture it in our reality. the mantis blades, for instance, have all these moving parts and animations that, when you slow it down or freeze frame it, you can get an idea of how it would actually work in real life and it really helps me stay grounded in the game. are big, sword length blades concealed in artificial arm replacements real? no. can i imagine them being a thing? hell yeah. but what i cant do is see, say in skyrim, a character using a summoning spell to create a magical sword out of thin air, and try to backwards-engineer that. oh, a wizard wrote a tome full of spells, my character read that tome, and now he can summon swords from nowhere. cool, but thats not real and it will never be real. maybe i'm just picky...

I feel exactly the same. I love the consideration put into so many of these systems even if just to give an inkling of functionality. I love imagining how these things would work and seeing how the artists put thought into how these things interact with each other. It's a small part of why I love Berserk; a lot of the highly fantastical elements are compensated for with some degree of realism without harming the story. Edit: Although I wrote "the exact same," this isn't really the case. I think it really depends on the work of fiction and what the creator wants to convey. I still prefer more detailed works, but stressing over realism honestly just makes me miserable and doesn't let me enjoy what I'm reading/watching/playing.

If I had to guess or the way I took it, the reason all the weapons feel underpowered compared to real life is to give off the sense of people are much more durable due to implants like subdermal armor. I could be wrong but I always felt like civilians would die from literally anything one shot in a vital spot but the enemies are going to be a bit tougher and I don't think it's far fetched that even the poorer enemies would have implants cause there is many people illegally trading them, the game starts with showing you a group of scavvers harvesting parts out of people. Edit: Can't say it's correct but there was video I seen explaining why shotguns are so weak at range and basically, if it could shoot further, there would be no reason to use just about any semi auto rifle even extending to snipers if you had sight and slugs and yet it doesn't have the drawbacks those guns do, it's essentially too perfect and there's no real reason to use anything else.

I think the black powder revolvers reload is an omage, cyberpunk thematically and esthetically (especially the revolver skill tree but also just as a setting in general), takes a lot from old Westerns and the western genre in general. Were in media the revolver is king, so having an old black powder revolver style reload makes no sense realistically but checks out thematically, which is good enough for me to give it a pass even if it also mixes modern and futuristic aspects

If the game was realistic, everything would either be an AK variant, an AR variant, an M9 variant, or UMP/MP5 variant. Because those are the designs we gravitated towards IRL when it came to reliability and cost effectiveness. I however love the janky and obscure designs of CP2077 taking the forefront over the normal. Guns in 2077 are like your jewelry. You want rarer, more exotic, and different designs to show off to your chooms. It’s style over substance in 2077, and nobody wants to be the Basic Bitch when you and your friends show off your hardware. Hence why the military designs of Militech and Arasaka are closer to IRL guns than the street guns we find. Because they are the ones that value cost effectiveness and efficiency. Not the street. We want weird down here.

i suspect some of the differences in just the raw stats like the Nue hitting and firing harder than a liberty or unity despite the caliber is in part a video game "make the guns all different and scale up in power for different use cases" logic, similar to how in skyrim an ebony bow will hit harder then one made with orchicalcum. If you want an explanation, i'd just go with cyber tech shoved into the gun, same way they can make a cyber arm that's 100% functional as an augmented arm and contains a rocket launcher. 11:04 also i think i might be able to argue against the universal rail system cuz all the gun manufacturers in this game are competition and i wouldn't be shocked if there's some dumb copyright shenanigans with the rail systems just because why the hell not for cyberpunk. I also wonder how much the low damage on the ballistic weapons might be affected by skills.

@BatteryAcidEnj0yer the Glock and AR platforms are far from the only functional, widely-used designs around today. The problem with basing stuff off of those old, obscure, impractical designs is just that: they're impractical. No sensible person should ever want to take an unnecessarily complicated weapon into combat. They're prone to issues and usually unnecessarily expensive and difficult to fix. As mentioned in the video, look at the Mars pistol. It was rejected for a reason and wasn't used. There's no problem with being creative in your futuristic weapon designs, but at least think about how it would actually perform/function and whether someone would actually want to use it.

Fun fact, there have actually been a lot of versions of the Malorian 3516 because the gun itself was only ever made for Johnny, and Johnny alone. He kept ordering newer and more powerful ones, eventually to the point where his final Malorian was said to have the stopping power of an anti-tank gun and needed a cyberarm to actually fire it and not have the recoil of the gun rip your arms off. The original 3516, the first ever, was a custom Desert Eagle that was chambered to fire .577 Nitro Express.

Some fun facts about Johnny's pistol from the OG Lore: It's not actually a power weapon, it's Tech, it's just always firing at full charge with that spinning piece in the back I'm guess to be a part of it's "power recycling system", like the Pillar of Autumn's triple shot MAC from halo. It's also firing telescoping flechette rounds, which come in HE or Incendiary, in a 14mm caliber with enough force to equal that of a. 577 Nitro Express. It can also hook up specifically to Johnny's "Silver Hand" for a sort of pseudo-smart weapon auto aim. So Johnny's essentially using an aimbot-enhanced, 10 round holding, pistol sized elephant-rifle railgun. I fucking love Cyberpunk XD.

So it’s totally reasonable to assume combat/defense implants are on combat soldiers. Just like how Maelstrom are weak to quick hacks, MaxTac are extremely tough against all forms of damage, they got that reinforced ribcage surgery.
