In this video, we take a closer look at Navy SEALs Hell Week, a grueling five-and-a-half-day training program that pushes candidates to their physical and mental limits.
We debunk the myth that the mentally toughest people on the planet are those who can endure this ordeal. Research shows that during extreme stress, 96% of soldiers experience dissociative symptoms. In those moments, they are scared and anxious, not fearless and stoic. Mental toughness is not about throwing someone into the deep end of the most testing trials and challenges and seeing who can handle it. Instead, it's about educating personnel on a range of mental skills so they can cope with incredibly stressful experiences. Mental toughness is about accepting many thoughts and feelings and then using skills to cope.
We discuss three things we learned from Steve Magness' book, "Do Hard Things," that show what mental toughness really is and how to practically build it. Mental toughness is about listening to your feelings and emotions, accepting the discomfort and uncertainty of challenges, and having the resilience to adapt to change.
