In my experience, just be patient with sewing with denim, and do lots of practicing stitches on scrap fabric as you go along. It took me many practice runs with the topstitching thread, to get the tension right on my machine to reduce the appearance of loops on the underside. Topstitching thread is tricky! But so worth it. It looks amazing when you get the hang of it. Also helpful for cheaper domestic sewing machines like mine, is to reduce the thickness of layers of denim: lots of trimming as you go, also consider using thinner fabrics for things like hidden facings. My red floral cotton remnant used for the facing of my most recent denim skirt makes me smile every time I put it on (no one can see it, but it’s my secret when putting it on).

I would love to see a video with tips about sewing with corduroy. Everything I read makes it seem like corduroy is difficult to work with. I have some chunky cord fabric that I would like to use to make a chore jacket or jean style pants, but I've been holding off until I figure out how to work with it, especially how to press it without crushing the wales. Thanks for your videos!

This video was really helpful. I have some denim that needs to be used. In the future, I would love to learn more about double gauze. I completely ruined some last year by picking the wrong pattern.

I second the motion on the corduroy, but I have a fine wale that I would like to make a long button up skirt to wear with tall boots for fall and winter. Teach us all the tricks, please! Thanks for your videos!❤

How do you get the washed effect on the seams of your denim if you plan on changing/ altering the look of the hems?

If the denim contains elastane, would you switch to a stretch needle?

Generally I stick with a denim needle whether the fabric has stretch or not.

This is super helpful! Wheres does Chambray fit in? (Is that even denim?!) Talking about chambray: is Hayley's shirt a Friday Company Donny shirt in Chambray?! 😍If it isn't a me made, can you suggest mods to the Seamwork Natalie to make something similar to that?? Many thanks 🙏

Great minds think alike! I was also wondering about Chambray!

Chambray is usually a lighter weight and it's a plain weave, not a twill weave like denim.

Haley is wearing a vintage top, but if you made the Natalie in a chambray I think you could get a really similar look!

Thank you for an interesting and informative video 😊 - but this does feel like another channel that forgets, or ignores, that men sew too 😢

I'm sorry you're feeling left out! We love men who sew. Our patterns are primarily focused on women, but we do have a handful that are designed to be gender inclusive: www.seamwork.com/catalog/filters/gender-inclusive

Hailey, you remind me so much of a teenage friend I had 45 years ago. She was adorable, and so are you. Stay fresh hearted my dear, and keep on teaching.
