I have to say that 98% of the problems on Tacoma/4Runner 4wd systems that I have seen at our dealer is due to the frozen actuator from inactivity. Ironically, these vehicles always show up in service after the first slippery road event in late fall/early winter.

Yep, I'll put my wife's 4runner in 4wd/low/rear locker/crawl control just to go to the mailbox, just to make sure everything stays working. In 7 years the 4wd has only been needed one time, so I could see where that is a problem for most people.

I have wanted a tacoma for several years now and finally bought one 2 weeks ago. My first true new vehicle. I was even more encouraged by amd to get one and I am thankful I did. The truck saves me 30 min. Everyday in commute time being able to go around traffic and I actually get to use the 4wd system everyday so I don't need to wory about the monthly on off. Not wonderful for gas milage as was my corolla but this truck is so much more enjoyable to drive. As well as I am able to explore places that my corolla could never have even dreamed of going. Thank you sincerely amd.

Thank you for simplifying this. I’m a DIYer and have always owned and kept older vehicles running. I purchased a 22 Tacoma SR 4x4 almost 2 years ago fresh from the factory. I saved for years and this is my first 4x4 vehicle. I actually read the owners manual front to back and have quietly stressed about being unable to use the 4x4 more than 4/5 times within the last 2 years. I thought I had to literally drive it off road 10 miles to maintain the system. (I knew someone with a first gen tundra who’s system seized from lack of use also) I hope to legitimately off road more, but knowing it’s really about activating the actuator puts me at ease. I can easily do what you did at the end of my commute to work once a month. Thank you

First and foremost AMD, You have the absolute best Toyota channel on the Tubes and love all You do and how You do it. I would like to pass on a very interesting if not strange solution I’ve recently found concerning the transfer case shifting problems on many of these trucks. I’ve never heard You or anyone else mention this “trick” I call it a trick because I absolutely have no explanation how or why it works , but for me it has been 100%. My truck is a 2019 sport 6 speed 3 pedal variety, so sad to say I do not know if there is any similar procedure for the automatics. The “problem” with my truck since new has been not engaging into 4 low, and when sometimes it does, it will not come back out. Never had trouble between 2 and 4 high. This was absolutely not a sticking issue due to non use. Now, I certainly understand your reasoning for doing things by the Toyota procedures, and appreciate that, and respect that, but it is not difficult at all to remove/ replace these actuators without removing and splitting the transfer case. I’ve done this many times and it is simple to do. Anyway, on to the “trick” for the manuals- when it hangs up either going into 4low or coming out, put the gear shift in neutral and fully depress and release the clutch pedal 2 times. As You are releasing the pedal the second time, you can actually hear the actuator doing it’s thing. When I was first told about this I thought “yeah right, or something to that effect”. I tried it and was and still 5:38 am amazed. Has worked every time without fail! Has to be some explanation but I sure don’t know what it is.

Coincidentally I just did the 4X4 engagement routine on wet paved city roads, driving straight, heading home from work yesterday. I would not have considered this with my 1992 Toyota Truck I had purchased from brand new. Owned it for 14 years. Never did have an issue with the 4X4 engagement tho. Hello. I wrote this comment in the transmission edition of your Tacoma series. Again, thank you for explaining that the 4H mode can be switched in and out on asphalt, going in a straight line. Helps us that can’t get to dirt every month to keep the actuator from freezing up from no use. My question is about the 4Lo and the Locking rear diff actuators. Do they have issues if they are not used regularly ? Can they be used on dry pavement as well for short distances in a straight line ? Obviously 4Lo needs to be at low speed. Thank you for sharing all of your awesome knowledge.

@@TheCarCareNut , thank you again for answering this question. Your informative videos are very helpful, and extremely knowledgeable. If I may, I suggest maybe adding a brief new one explaining this simple bit of information you shared here on the 4Lo and Locking diff a actuators. You cover the 4Hi one very well in the video. I did not ask about the Crawl Control. This I know deals more with the brakes. I’m guessing it is merely a computer thing and doesn’t have any real mechanical parts except the actual brakes, no actuator that needs the special attention like the 4x mode and locking diff. Thanks again for you continued sharing of your excellent knowledge. You have a great presentation personality, keep it up. I know, I tell many new Tacoma owners to search out and watch your videos. 10:42 I have crawl control on my TRD Off-Road. You explained very well how the truck doesn't spin the front diff and prop shaft when in 2WD. Thus I assume the CV axles are spinning in 2WD. Can I install locking hubs on my 2019 to disable the CV axles in 2WD? Even less wear and tear if we could do that. Edit: You mentioned a couple of times to engage the 4 HI periodically while driving in a straight line. As an avid off-roader, I understand why you specifically mentioned in a straight line. If you ever do a follow up video, maybe you could mention why it's bad to be in four wheel drive doing turns on a hard surface. Not everyone in the audience might have a full grasp of this concept. As always, another terrific video.

Question not exclusive to the Tacoma but maybe all Toyota 4x4. I own a 1999 4runner that made a clunking sound when first drive right after starting. I sold it and bought a 2020 tundra 4x4 and it makes the same exact noise. I was told it was normal on the 4runner. Never worried about it and it worked flawlessly for the 20 years I owned it. If it happens when you put it in drive (or reverse) it's slack in the driveline... It isn't 100% tight so you get a slight clunk or click, even on very new RWD based vehicles. I assume that's your clunk since the truck is so new, other clunks would involve worn bushings and loose bolts that you don't find in new vehicles, and they make a pretty good clunk that feels like someone bumped you gently.

I do miss my 93’ T100 it was slow, but tough. Floor mounted selector with ADD which worked excellent. I couldn’t tell if you let off the gas when you turned the drive selector dial. The manual stated that I needed to do that in the T100 while shifting on the fly. The old system felt robust particularly when I was using the snowplow attachment. Never had an ounce of problem as I engaged the system throughout the year. Really enjoy your videos. Do you recommend a pedal commander for the 3.5 in the Tacoma? At around 70k miles I had an issue where I got an error saying “2wd-4wd mode change failure” and it wouldn’t shift into 4wd. I do use my 4wd somewhat regularly so lack of use wasn’t the issue. When I looked into it, a number of other people have also had the issue. Supposedly it results when the electrical connections on little motor inside of the ADD come loose. There’s a video online (ClassyTaco) where he removes and repairs it. I did the repair, but when I opened up the ADD there was a small amount of water in it (the connections on the little internal motor were fine so I assume it was the water causing the issue). I dried it out, regreased the moving parts and reinstalled. No issues since. My question is: how did water get in there?? The breather is routed up much higher into the engine compartment, and I haven’t driven through any water high enough to reach the ADD itself. The only thing I can think of is that moist air got in through the breather and condensed? Is that possible?

Hi, great channel with clear and simple descriptions. Thank you. I bought a 2021 SR5 about 2 months ago with 35,000 mi on it. After reading the manual where it did say to exercise the 4WD system monthly I tried both 4Hi and 4Lo. After shifting into 4Lo an alarm beep tones and stays beeping until out of 4Lo and into 4Hi. Dealer tells me this is normal because the anti skid control is de-activated in 4Lo and this is a safety feature. Is this true??? Will this thing always tone while in 4Lo??? What if you are loafing around a beach or tight trail areas where you only want to go slow or pulling a loaded boat trailer up a slippery ramp. Doesn't seem right for a serious 4WD vehicle. If it is right, is there any way to deactivate the safety alarm??? Question on the Off Road: if there is really no difference between the standard other than braking, what is the advantage? Does it choose 4Lo for you when you are in sand? Can you run that in 4Lo without an alarm? Or is it all just marketing?

I totally agree with the lever over the dial. It's hard to love a system that keeps you guessing if it's gonna work or not.

Great series- thank you! I have a manual 2004 with 342,000 miles, just bought a 2022 manual off-road. Your transmission video (#2) left me unfulfilled. All that talk about the automatic transmissions, and then only 'the manual is great'.....haha Curious about your heritage- your English is so good I can't place the very slight accent? Obvious that you know a ton about cars (well, Tacomas, at least) Had to subscribe and look forward to learning much more from The Car Care Nut!

Hi car care nut! Great video!! Thank you for putting the time in to make these. I am having a problem with my truck and you may be the man who can help. My Tacoma is stuck in 4h. It will not go to 4low or 2wd. When I try to switch it just flashes the 4wd dash light. I regularly use my 4wd and it has always worked no problem. It’s a 2016 limited. If you have any suggestions they will be welcomed:) BTW I have tried the reverse neutral forward backwards on and off pavement method but nothing yet. Thanks!

Hi! Tap on the add actuator lightly as you have someone else try to disengage it and see if this does the trick

There’s also a video by a guy named “Classys Garage” where he addresses this issue. Search “Tacoma no 4wd fix” and it should come up. I know yours is stuck in 4wd but it can be cause by the same issue.

I have a 2018 Taco. We do some skiing and we get some snow occasionally. I drive in 4H on the pavement quite often. Of course I have to make turns. Should I not be doing this?

Sometimes my 2020 off road clunks when going from 4-wheel High to two-wheel but most of the time it's really quiet and smooth

I need to get to working with the 4wheel drive more. I haven't used mine since early March 🙄 shame on me. I need to find a gravel road or some off road more often to get in 4 LO

I did that with my tundra. The next thing I knew the 4lo was beeping and flashing every time I turned it on. Oh well. I ended up shifting the 4WD back and forth and hit the actuator with a rubber mallet. Then it worked again. No more flashing and beeping. 😂

My understanding is that both the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trim levels come with crawl control. Maybe you meant the TRD trim levels (not the Pro) trim levels. If I misunderstood the video, my apologies. Excellent series by the way. Also very much enjoyed the 4Runner deep dive series.

I have a 2018 TRD OFFROAD, not the Pro version, it has Crawl Control and a rear locker.
