This villain would've instantly had more depth if he was shown hesitating for even a millisecond before delivering the 'that was his mistake,' line. It would hint that he believes he's too far gone to stop even if he has regrets. It would also better mirror Hiro's lesson that we always have the choice to be good, even if grief drives us down dark paths.

For all of a dick Callaghan was with the whole "THAT WAS _HIS_ MISTAKE!" line, he's not wrong. Tadashi ran into _a burning building_ with no protection to try to find one man. If the building wasn't _filled to the brim with flames,_ maybe enough to navigate through where the only risk is smoke inhalation, then _maybe_ it wouldn't be that bad. But the guy just runs in there when there really was no other way outside of super stuff.

Plus smth even schaff acknowledged in his twist villain vid is that hans had no way of knowing that killing elsa would get rid of the snow. And he rlly didn’t have a reason to tell Anna all that; even if the kiss didn’t work then Anna might’ve still wanted to be w/ him or he could’ve figured smth else while she was still under the impression he was a good guy. I think the reason the movie gives for why Hans thinks killing elsa and Anna will give him the throne was bc Anna left him in charge but that was just a temporary thing, I doubt they’d give him the actual throne bc of that

His plan is to make it look like he's the hero who killed the evil ice witch who froze everything; with the royal family dead, nobody else to take over the throne, and him looking like a hero to the populace, he expects that the people will make him the new king. Not really inheritance so much as "there's nobody else to rule us, but this guy saved our lives and also knows how to rule a kingdom (probably), so why not him?" It could fail if it turned out there was some distant relative who could take the throne, but it's not the worst plan imaginable.

I feel like if that was the case they would have mentioned Tadashi instead of Krei when they call out the red herring at Fred’s manor. Maybe Hiro could get really obsessed with the idea because it would mean that his brother’s alive, and just shut down when it’s revealed to be Callaghan. Callaghan could actively confirm Tadashi’s death because he was in the building when it happened, with hopefully some something more tactful than “THAT WAS HIS MISTAKE”. The issue is that none of that grief was shown at all, hell the majority of people even forgot who Callahan was until the twist reveal because his character had such little presence in the movie. There wasn't any flashback or hints of him grieving or even existing after the beginning of the movie, which cheapens any emotional moment they try to pull with him and that only ended in him becoming an extremely generic super evil guy that wants to kill everyone. It's not that the concept for his motivation is bad, it's that the movie completely failed to execute the concept.

I mean, I can kinda see where he's coming from, but beyond Callaghan's admittedly somewhat drastic change in characterization (which I honestly don't think is that major, he's two different aspects of the same person - like a supervillain, which is what the film is intentionally going for), he's assuming a level of smugness onto the film that I just don't think is there. The fact that the film makes you think it's person A but really it's person B is just how red herrings work. And the fact that the story openly labels Krei as the likely identity of the masked man is meant to cause doubt in the audience's mind, because the answer couldn't be that obvious, the film wouldn't just give it away like that, so there has to be more at work here (which it turns out there is). As for his lack of concern over Tadashi's death, he likely didn't know Tadashi went into the building right before it exploded, and by the time we see him give an opinion on it, he's too overwhelmed by his need for revenge to accept that he caused the death of one of his best students. He doesn't admit that he's to blame until in the TV series, when he's had time to atone for his actions in prison. It plays into the theme of grief Big Hero 6 is going for, and how it's important to accept loss rather than obsessing over trying to pursue revenge. Unlike Hiro, Callaghan is willing to fully dedicate himself to vengeance, no matter the cost, because he's unable to accept that his daughter died (or so he thinks). It's one of my pet peeves of online criticism: a character acting illogically is not necessarily indicative of subpar writing, and believing such just leads to nitpicking. Finally, as for why he didn't use the portal to look for his daughter: he didn't know what was on the other side of the portal, and so had no reason to venture beyond to look for her. The experiment was a portal with two different doors, even Krei likely didn't think just having one door open would lead to any actual location. Besides, it had been so many years that it would be safe to assume that she died in wherever she ended up. Also, I disagree with there being "so little to say" about the movie. Like, Baymax is honestly up there with WALL-E in terms of fictional robot writing (instead of looking inhuman but acting very human, he looks somewhat human but acts like a normal robot following its programming).

EXACTLY. I enjoy Schaf's work, but every so often he seems to miss the mark ever so slightly in misunderstanding or misinterpreting characters (like in his Undertale "review" video where he labeled Flowey as "trying to be edgy", without understanding that he was Asriel [the son of the king and queen] AND was soulless in this flower form) or doesn't explore every possibility. It's funny to bring it up again as a joke, but it sometimes feels degrading and a constant (somewhat annoying) reminder that Schaf doesn't like this movie/doesn't like the one villain. Oh well, it is what it is....
@thirdcoinedge

@@KraziShadowbearYeah, it's like when he claimed that Valka had no story purpose in HTTYD 2 and the film would've functioned the same without her (it wouldn't). Sometimes, he sheds light on aspects of films that I didn't previously think were that noteworthy (like with Shrek 4), but sometimes he just doesn't quite understand the more subtle elements of films. Fortunately, Schaffrillas is much more entertaining, inspiring, and open-minded than CinemaSins ever was or will be.

@@KraziShadowbear @thirdcoinedge all very true, but we mustn’t forget to give credit where it *is* due, cus lets be honest, he has over the years had some of the best ways to sum up general thoughts on movies, without doing them injustice, known to man- he is home to the rawest sum-up of anything every, his analogy of his HOP review- “Basically, this movie is on the exact same level of quality as the live action Smurf movies, except it DOESNT have Gargamel in it, and Gargamel was the only good part of those movies!, so yeah!” Now why am I bringing any of this up when I said I agree with you to begin with and this ultimately makes no difference? …eh, I just take any excuse to bring that line up 😆

Schaff does sometimes miss the subtexts of characters, even a bit. Like with his take on AUTO from WALL-E, where he called it a bad antagonist because of how little emotion it shows. When in reality, that's the point of AUTO. Hes the antithesis of the lovable protagonist, WALL-E, who possesses a ton of feeling and individualism, so of course AUTO is cold and only follows orders.

6:50 Why didn't he like Brave and Happy Feet winning best animated feature, The Boss Baby, Shark Tale and Ralph Breaks The Internet being nominated for best animated feature, Crash winning best picture, Green Book winning best picture, etc.? I at least saw his best animated feature winners video, where he ranked Brave and Happy Feet as the two worst, so I can kind of understand that. In his video where he talks about the 95th Oscars, I think he said something about Jimmy Kimmel by saying that he can't stand his smug face or something. I also know about why he didn't like Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker being nominated for best original score, because he did a video where he ranked the Star Wars scores based on each movie. And also about The Boss Baby, Ralph Breaks The Internet and Shark Tale being nominated for Best Animated Feature, because The Boss Baby and Shark Tale are some of the worst films on his DreamWorks list and Ralph Breaks The Internet is one of the worst films on his Disney list. Why didn't he like the other things?

Big Hero Six is one of those properties, (like Miraculous, Voltron, TDP etc) that has a incredibly engaging setting and far more potential than what it lived up to. The setting, the concept, the background, these college students turned heroes helping their dead friends brother. Even the bit about the nanobots was interesting. It touches on how scientists and inventors often make things to better peoples lives, only to be found and turned into different and more violent ways, like Nobel with Dynamite, or the wright brothers inventing aeroplanes. I know Disney can't go full dark on things and talk about the military industrial complex, but imagine if the masked villain essentially stole and weaponised all the tech from the science convention. Wasabi's blades, Honey's chemicals, Gogo's wheels, Hiro's Nanobots and even Baymax's medical knowhow and robotic frame. It's the attempt of these scientists putting on and weaponizing their own gear, and trying to take back their inventions from this masked man, before it's weaponised, mass produced and unleashed on San Fransokyo. IDK I've prolly put too much thought into it.

Callahan would be such an interesting villain if his goal was to go in and rescue his daughter instead of killing a bunch of innocents, even knowing full well how dangerous reconstructing the portal would be and how many innocent lives it would endanger.
@Fangria

honestly all they needed to make callahan good was make it so he explains that he didnt save tadashi because that would mean mean revealing he stole the nanobots, making it be that he was so scared of losing this shot at getting revenge that he let tadashi die. let his face show remorse when hero yells at him before switching to anger as a way to mask his own pain over losing another person he thought of like a child and refusing to accept his fault. that and inckude a scene where after seeing the true power if heros nanobits you see a look on his face like an idea, or show him trying on the nanobot control band at the expo and having the nanobots form into the portal then looking at the man he deems responsible. he had such a good set-up to be so tragic and awesome if they just gave a couple more hints
