"Evening dedicated to D. Shostakovich (commemorating the 70th Birthday)" Symphony No. 5 D minor Opus 47 The State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the USSR E. Svetlanov, conductor; 1976

Very exciting -- the poor brass. Spent by the end.

To perform the finale like that at an event commemorating Shostakovitch's life. What a joke. The barbarian only triumphs over the artist so long as he lives, art is immortal.

How right you are. Sounds like the score to a hurricane. Even Bernstein wasn't this freaking rude. Is there a fire in the hall or is he just in a hurry to get to the airport before the crowds trample him?

Once you have experienced the non-rit ending, you can never go back... So much more power and meaning

Little note here: The tempo of the finale is quite right, Shostakovitch himself asked his son Maxim as when he conducted it, to play it that fast. This is meant as a storm. Listen to Mrawinsky, who rehearsed the fifth with Shostakovitch, he takes the "Allegro ma non troppo" as fast as Svetlanov. So nothing "wrong" here ...

It's not right as per the score - crotchet = 188 at rehearsal 131, the metronome marking is all the way through to the end. Haitink gets close but even he is not quite there, Bernstein almost gets it right but adds a ritardando in the last 4 bars which is not called for by Shostakovich. Maxim and Mravinsky are both way too slow and destroy Shostakovich's intentional frisson.

@@Skidoo22 How can Mravinsky destroy the intention of the composer when the composer himself asked him to play it exactly like that? Or is he just destroying your intention of what Shostakovitch's intention should have been?
