In this video, published in August 2013, I discuss the prevailing principles of effective criminal justice intervention for defendants and offenders - the Risk-Need-Responsivity Principle or RNR. Since the publication of this video, additional research has expanded on the understanding of how to operationalize responsivity in particular, but the basic tenets of the RNR framework continue to hold true and be reinforced by ongoing research. In short, research has shown repeatedly that in order to protect the public safety and to correct criminal or antisocial behavior effectively and cost effectively, interventions must be targeted and strategic based on who is at greatest risk of committing new crimes and what specific types of interventions the data reveal would be most effective for the specific individual.
In this video, I am providing the overview in my capacity as a technical assistance provider at the Justice Management Institute.
