I liked the minimal humor. It added an extra element of ‘holy shit this really would be so terrifying if this was real and happening to me and my family.’ Adding too much comedy, even with kids in it, just doesn’t give the hopeless feeling it was portraying. Besides I was laughing in shock of half the things Momma Deadite said to the family. Just completely bonkers and I can’t wait for the next installment.

Exactly my thoughts aswell. I enjoyed the dark humour in this movie, never watched a movie like this. Sometimes i caught myself chuckle a little just at how crazy some of the scenes were or somethings the mom would say. I have never watched an evil dead movie in my life. The trailer intrigued me so i gave it a watch not knowing what to expect. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. One of my favourite horror movies i’ve seen in a long while. Big fan of this newly found world. Not many horrors i’ve seen that can balance horror, gore, dark comedy & fun all in one, also without relying on jumpscares. 10/10 for me.

Yeah I agree, I couldn’t believe how dark they actually went with this movie. They knew the tension they would instantly get from Evil Dead fans, by just adding a family with 3 young kids into the mix, but the fact that they didn’t hold back on any of them? Holy shit. By the end of the movie I was surprised even the little girl survived. This film was top notch in my opinion. And I’m a huge fan of every Evil Dead film. I really hope we get another instalment that keeps with the tone of the previous 2.

Honestly, I don't know why but the one moment that stuck out for me was the little interaction between Danny and Cassie after their mom turned into a deadite and was locked out of the apartment It's such a tiny but cute moment where the little girl reassures her big brother (who's rightfully terrified) and it touched my heart a little

My biggest complaint with this movie was the same for 2013…there’s no story development. What did the book conjure? What was its purpose? They were like “look it’s a book filled with pictures” but one thing the originals did was really lean into the “why” element more. Maybe they will when they do the movie about the “3rd book” as it set that up but overall it was like, ok…what’s the stakes? That really detracted from the experience.

I saw Evil Dead last night and loved it - weirdly I felt like this was a full return to the slapstick Evil Dead, like Evil Dead 2 with Evil Dead 2013 production value. I completely agree with your point about character development, it is the main reason why I didn't love the movie. I was expecting to like it more than the 2013 remake, but that wasn't the case. The 2013 movie remains one of my favorite horror movies. The dynamic between David and Mia is fantastic, and you get to know a lot more about them than what you get to know about the sisters in this movie. Also, the possession in this movie was way too rushed, in the 2013 film, it takes a bit for Mia to become 100% possesed, here it is almost immediate. Rise also didnt surpass the absolute brutal imagery of the remake But that doesnt mean the movie didnt have some really scary parts, the possesion with the vinyl was such a great Idea, the "open up now" scene, and a part that I though was super scary was when Ellie puts her finger on the vinyl and opens her mouth and uses it as a speaker, so unsettling

To qualify your point about the characters needing more exposition, the show easily could’ve tacked on another thirty minutes to explore more of that and include the supporting cast more to facilitate it. I don’t know why the movie was only about an hour and a half long, but they could’ve done more with it if they wanted.
@Mark-nh2hs

Short and snappy - if they explored the characters more many of the reviewer's would be moaning about the pointless character development and that's not what they want in horror as it's a horror movie and when they don't do it they complain lol. Most horror films are trying to get back to the 80s running time as many people are getting fed up with long horror films as they tend to get bogged down with exposition dumps every 5mins. Having a film going this is the family, there's a bit of tension briefly explained and then "Holy Crap" the shit hits the fan and film ends - nice and sweet lol But Evil Dead is not very deep on characterisations lol

My only problems with it are nitpicks that only apply when you compare it to the previous movies Such as how the deadites are more fragile and not as smart for example the door scene in the other movies the mother would of made herself look normal And while the movie is brutal and gory it is tame compared to the previous films

This was ok for me. Hugely disappointing considering how much I loved the past 4 movies, but this ain't bad. Few standout moments here and there, great acting, very impressive production design and cinematography. Still, this felt very derivative, its script relying heavily on homages to its predecessors at the expense of creative storytelling and use of gore (for real, this felt tamer than the other movies). I'm also conflicted about its contributions to the lore. Some of the choices made in that regard made me feel less invested in the situations. Doesn't help that the family drama is very by-the-numbers and not given enough attention to make me care about anyone's survival. There's a story here, and the actors try their best, but it felt like an afterthought. I still love Evil Dead, but this movie had the potential to go harder and bleaker without loosing its morbid sense of humor. The 2013 film is still my go-to example at a modern take on the Evil Dead story.

I had a woman bring 3 kids all under 11 in the seats next to me and I could see and hear them periodically where they were asking her to leave and she didn't listen. Don't be that parent. Side point - movie is LOUD. 2) Semi-surprised the movie didn't get slapped with a NC17 during the rating process and have to be chopped a little. Not to say it's worse than anything else in the franchise, especially the show. The violence against kids just takes it to that extra level of nastiness. @@JustinQuinn623 The ending scene? It was the intro leading to the beginning of the movie?

I personally prefer my evil dead dark and horrific, 1 and 2013 are my favorites for that reason, so I’m glad they didn’t go back to the comedy!

I agree. Wasn’t too keen on the 2013 one but I love the original

My brother and I actually really enjoyed the fact that there wasn’t any humor in this movie. Especially since our last visit to the theaters was scream 6, It was a breathe of fresh air that this movie was taken completely seriously.

Tbh the movie had few suspense and tense scary scenes but they tried to bring a lot of gore and blood in this one to terrify people which doesn’t work much and grosses you out after few moments .the real scary movies are ones which doesn’t bring a lot of gore and blood but scares through tense atmosphere and edge of the seat moments and jump scares which is why the conjuring is one of the best horror movies for me because of the tense atmosphere throughout the movie and jump scares and horrifying edge of the seat moments without much of a graphical content .Directors should take cue from conjuring on how to create horror movies .Gore and blood are fine but showing it too much makes it gross and subdues the scary element of it .Evil dead franchise is known for its mix of scare and gore which is the theme but you need to have a balance although the climax has bit of tense chill moments .

At first I thought you said: "Also the *head of the Dead-Eyed* demonic presence in this film is...?" 🤔Then I thought nope - may be *deadite?* Gawd! Googled, and saw *parasitic demon* is what that is!! Now, that made the rest of your views flow so much better thank you!😉😊

Your review made me realize your background needs a copy of the Necronomicon on the table. Also, SPOILER the vinyl mentions it being one of three books. Curious if a now likely sequel will explore of of the other books or if it would be the third one to this one and the one Ash encountered.

Just went to see it today and as a seasoned horror veteran who's seen many gruesome and grotesque movies, I had to leave the theater midway through to avoid regurgitating my popcorn. I don't know what exactly it was about it but it was shocking.

I just saw it and loved it, but I had a different negative. I thought the wraparound story was unnecessary bordering on confusing and distracted me from the main plot.

Personally my only gripe with the film is there was TOO many weapons. To me it made sense that the little girls Staff she made was gonna replace the Kandarian dagger form the first one and I will say I was surprised that it wasn't the case and it still lead to an effect and gruesome kill. But in the isolated cabin in the woods they didn't have weapons as abundantly so it added more tension and then you were excited when they found the chainsaw, the shotgun, the dagger hell even a fucking pencil form the first one. But in this one the set it up to easily there's always a knife laying around or some kind of sharp glass or stick even the brother set his sister in fire which was supposes to cleanse the spirits which I was loke "ok this is nit how that works but ill go with it"

Great review! I had fun seeing this with my sister but I felt like it was missing something. I didn’t care for the design of the final creature either or the whole reluctant mother part. I do think the actors who played deadites were awesome, especially the mother. They had personality 😊

Went to go watch this on sunday, got completely ruined with a group of teenagers who talked the whole time and were obnoxious. For what I could enjoy it was really great, but its probably gonna have that bad experience tied with it forever for me. I wish people would stop going to the movies if they aren't actually gonna watch the movie.
