My DIY Evil Twin plane now flies off of water! Thanks to my little buddy Lane for "helping" even though I didn't let him fly. :) I'm still hoping to have a good water landing at some point...
I've been interested in floatplanes and seaplanes lately and this project reflects that. The floats I made for this old depron plane are way more solid than the plane. I've summarized my float knowledge below and in the video.
Original Evil Twin video, with plane specs: • The Evil Twin - first ...
About floats:
*Approximately 75% the length of the plane (mine are 33 inches)
*Buoyant enough for the weight of the plane (mine are 3 inches wide and about 3 inches thick)
*Provide a ~1/2 inch high "step" about 1/2 inch behind the CG
*Build in a 2-3 degree up/down slope fore and aft of the step
*Extend the floats far enough ahead of props to prevent nose-overs
*Not too heavy - mine weigh ~300 grams (1.7 kg AUW of plane)
Thanks to radiocontrolinfo.com, Chuck Cunningham, and FliteTest for design information.
