I have seen the same thing with these 22 cube powerheads. Out of the last six I have worked on five of them have had a bad upper crank seal. I have lost count of all of them I have replaced too. The puller makes this job very quick to do if you're already working on the ignition and everything is already off anyway. Nice video, Ben!

I already rebuilt the carb, also replaced the wiring harness, put in new fuel lines, replaced the fuel filter and am replacing all the seals in the lower end and the impeller... .. I noticed brown crap all over my starter and the throttle mechanism 's it look like it was spraying .. I'm guessing it's because of this seal .. so it looks like this is my next mission ..

My question is. I have a 5hp Honda outboard. Leaking oil under flywheel. I understand there’s a breather valve on top of crankcase also. Could a clogged breather cause oil to leak through seal? I’m gonna take off flywheel and see if I can determine cause. I will replace breather and clean. Then check seal with the soap test. Thanks for any information you can give me. I can’t find anything online specific to my 1985 honda 5hp.

Ben, I need your help with a 20HP chrysler motor. I just can't get it to spark at all. I gapped the points at .020 and cleaned and sprayed it all down with electrical contact cleaner. then I made sure the coil contact point was clean with 400 grit paper....same with magnet on inside of flywheel. I have done the same thing on other motors and it worked perfect. but this one still nothing. I noticed that the kill switch lead is not hooked to a button but not exposed so it should not be the problem....but I am at a loss....can you PM me? Thanks so much have learned a ton from you!

Does this engine still use the goofy oil recirc system that was used on older models? I never understood why they would remove the sealing oring, relying on vacuum from the intake to draw down any oil that may have snuck by the seal or between the bearing housing and crankcase....Yeah, I know you can't just add the oring...But this system just seems like a mistake...I could understand it if they moved the oring so it didn't interfere with the intake port, this way you would have both systems...But, I wonder how many upper seals have been replaced, when the real problem was an issue with the recirc system.... Oh well... Hi Pepper, stay warm...I layed over in MSP last week, might chilly indeed....

Is there a upper and lower crankshaft seal?
@conradts3338
2 жыл бұрын
How come no one does videos on replacing the lower seals on old outboards? Don't they wear the same? I just changed my upper seal on my 1964 Evinrude and now it runs without the choke on (nearly full) but it will not idle and it "farts" every few seconds at low speed. So since I have had the carb off five times for cleaning (literally), bought an ultrasonic cleaner, bought another carburetor, replaced all the supply lines, replace the fuel pump, I am suspecting the lower seal is bad and dreading taking on this job. Any thoughts?
@chrysleroutboarddude
2 жыл бұрын
So having a lower crankshaft seal leaking is very rare on one of these motors because they are a carbon seal. And replacing the lower crank seal is a big job the crankshaft has to be removed. Have you checked the carburetor link and sink as in the carburetor has to be fully closed at the idle position. If the carburetor is open at idle it will have a lean pop that will not go away
@conradts3338

@@chrysleroutboarddude Hmmm. My Evinrude is 9.5 Hp and they parts diagram shows the same seal for top and bottom. Hadn't considered that there was something else though if it's leaking it has to be changed. Is there a test or a symptom to look for? I'm gonna confirm that the throttle is fully closed at idle. I did some experimenting with the position of the cam follower that opens the throttle when I suspected the carburetor was the villain. The service manual I bought covers a range of Hp and years of manufacture and it is not always clear about a lot of stuff. Thanks for your reply.
@conradts3338

On this engine, you can take a plastic cover off the top of the carburetor horn and look right down it's throat. With the tiller set at idle, the throttle plate inside the carburetor is in the full down (closed) position. It doesn't start to open until he tiller is past the "Start" position. So I guess that's not it but thanks anyway.

@@conradts3338 Ok I was under the impression that you had a 22 cid motor. I have not run into a lower crankshaft seal leak on a 9.5 yet. As for the pooping at low speed it’s got to be going lean does it go away if you add choke? I know from experience that the low speed side of the carburetor is difficult to get clean sometimes

I may not be the best to answer, however if your stuck or new to all of this, I would always suggest to find the part Manuel for your motor than use part numbers to search. Most of your replacement parts will be sierra nowadays. I'm dealing with a 1953 seahorse and it's a pain to find parts. But they're out there. Crowleysmarine.com, aomc.com and even thehulltruth.com will help anyone out.. but alot of ebay and Amazon parts too. Just saying.

Ben, I watch you videos and have a question you or anyone else could please answer. I bought a 1987 8 hp Johnson 2 stroke with very low yours and like new condition. The motor starts and runs fine. There is a sticker on the motor near the gas hose connector that states use 100:1 gas oil mix. OMC had 100:1 from 1985 to 1988 and then went back to 50:1 for their small outboards. Should I use 50:1 or does the carburetor on this motor have smaller jets for 100:1 mix and would not run right at 50:1? Any advice from anyone would be helpful?
