Different size tyres front and rear is not a good idea on awd/4wd cars. Your centre diff isn’t designed to have to slip constantly. People even worry about having 2 worn tyres and 2 new tyres, never mind different sizes front and rear. Some RWD based AWD systems like 911’s are designed for a slight mismatch but generally it’s not a good idea. 👍🏻

Those tires where how it was when I bought them at the time, I do have another Evo now that’s different to the one on the video and tire sizes are all the same but different offset, usually wider in the rear for that extra grip

Sold the car man, I used to regret it but over time having a auto was super boring, was a quick car but the small things bothered me too, even taking off it sounded so off, obviously because of the auto but the sound it makes changing gears and just normal driving feels like I’m in a Toyota Camry

Appreciate the love bro, paid $20k for it, but nowadays it’s becoming super difficult to find a decent one for anywhere near that, a lot of them are now $30k and over, mine has 130000km and came with a bunch of genuine and aftermarket parts, I guess I was just lucky

They are good cars if you look after them, but the gearbox’s are crap, the specific Evo in the video had 120000km and a good service history, I got the car dyno tuned with a few bolt ons but stock turbo and spent a bit time doing roll racing, 6 months after the noticed some minor changes to the way the car shifts, a bit more delay between gear changes and clunking noises here and there, any good tuner will tell you not to push anymore than 250hp, 270hp or more will destroy the gearbox, I bought a second Evo GTA at the beginning of this year with 250000km and it blew the gearbox on bone stock power and modifications, believe me when I say a lot of GTA owners have reported the gearbox’s failing even leaving the stock standard. There’s too much information to get into today as to why this happens but changing out the gearbox on your own is a shitty job to do, gearboxes are expensive, you can get them built and strengthened for half the price of a manual swap and you’ll have happy days pushing over 350hp at the wheels all day everyday but it’s not worth it, just get a manual instead. Just be careful when buying one and make sure it has a good service history, but even then, over time the gearbox is weak and go at anytime

Keep in mind, if you want a quick car with an Evo badge, your better off with other JDM cars, the GTA is a quick car stock form but don’t be surprised when you spend thousands on modifications just for 210hp or 230hp at the wheels, it won’t read very high because of the auto but you will gain alot more torque though, the engines on the GTA vs manual are slightly different like cams and apparently rods are weaker compared to manuals, I quickly learnt that the hard way after selling my GTA for a Skyline which made twice the power and fun for half the price and effort, even then, selling a automatic Evo wasn’t as easy as you’d think, around $15k-$25k they don’t hold their value that well

Thanks for the quick response and very detailed rundown of your experience, hard to find much owner info on these ones, I'd probably look for one with a full service history and get the transmission rebuilt (unless already done) not looking to push big power figures, just a few tasteful mods if it hasn't got already, something that's nice to cruise around, while doing the occasional pull.

I'd only really take it out once or twice a week, more of a car to work on and maintain/detail as a hobby on the weekends. I live in Brisbane so it's hard to find many with low kms, importing one is an option too

@@alecmckenzie9458 if you do plan on making it reliable, while you rebuild it, get stronger clutch packs and an upgraded wave spring, the wave spring is what’s weak and damages the gearbox, unfortunately the only person that knows these gearboxes inside and out with the right parts is a guy down in Sydney Australia. He’s so well known he gets gearboxes sent in from over seas to get rebuilt, it only costs $3500 for a basic rebuild but to get it built and strengthened he will only charge a little bit more around $4500, he will do cheaper if you bring in old parts from your car like the old flywheel and torque converter, but he will also tell you while everything is out instead of going with OEM replacements get stronger aftermarket pieces such as the wave spring, once he’s done you can launch the car to the moon and it will hold all the power down

How much torque and hp can this auto transmission take?

Not a lot honestly, I’ve spoken to tuners and people that specialise in these gearbox’s and they are rubbish, if your lucky enough to pick up a GTA Evo with low km and have a good history (not abused or raced) a good tune with bolt ons can get you around 230hp-250hp, they don’t make much power because of the auto but you will get a good amount of torque, you can gain more but every tuner that knows these cars wouldn’t push anymore to prevent damage to the gearbox, torque is what destroys these boxes, the engine can handle the boost but over time it will start slipping gears and the infamous wave spring fail, mine was tuned and I never had any issues (yet) but it also goes down on how you drive it, I can go really deep and explain everything about them but it would be too long, a cheaper option apposed to a manual swap is to get the gearbox built and strengthened, you can get them tuned and modify the clutch packs to handle more torque etc… and depending on who builds it, it will handle up to 500hp, its still cheaper to build the auto for power over a manual swap but I find driving an auto is boring, I like to have full control of my car, I also need to mention, a lot of Evo GTA owners have also reported even at stock power, no mods, the gearbox’s fail, so if you imagine these guys running standard GTA’s with stock power breaking boxes and having various issues ranging from strange noises and difficulty shifting gears, just imagine how much more stress the stock box will go through if the car is tuned. I also want to make it clear there are people who have tuned GTA’s on stock unopened gearbox’s still running strong, but it’s a common problem
