It involves careful observation, applying rigorous skepticism about what is observed, given that cognitive assumptions can distort how one interprets the observation. It involves formulating hypotheses, via induction, based on such observations; the testability of hypotheses, experimental and the measurement-based statistical testing of deductions drawn from the hypotheses; and refinement (or elimination) of the hypotheses based on the experimental findings. More specifically a fact that is not adequately falsifiable. For instance, gravity still remains a theory because we have yet to fully describe the underlying mechanism, while something like the 13.8B y.o. dating of emergent light from the Big Bang is an unambiguous truth claim because we can repeatably measure the red shift of CMBR
@nowandrew4442

That's not accurate. A scientific theory describes observations or, more usually, collections of observations. A theory does *not* claim to "be a fact". To be clear, science doesn't actually deal with "fact" - this is also a layman's term because explaining the scientific method to laymen has proven more difficult than explaining quantum theory... Actually everything you have said is wrong. Academic studies come after your own hypothesis but formulated on the basis of previous work in the field. It's essentially your prediction of what you expect to find when performing your study. A theory is what someone might publish after performing many such studies alongside reviewing a lot of subject matter material from others. Even this is nothing like a "fact". Hopefully it covers some points within it that may have become indisputable as facts, but a theory is only and will only ever be deductions based on ever-increasing literature in the field in question. Deductions which may later prove to be invalid if contradictory findings are published.

It's clear that we still don't understand a lot of things about gravity but it will always be a theory even if/when we know everything about it with certainty. Super wrong. A theory is a set of statements that are falsifiable, explain the collected data and can be used to make accurate predictions. Some theories are extremely solid, like evolution. Why did I touch upon religion? Because I believe that the belief systems are >75% responsible for this science-denying effect. After all, for a religious person to disprove their belief; is essentially the same to disproving what they are and has always been. Fun fact: Religious people tends to believe that science is conspiring against their beliefs, while in truth, science simply keep on revealing whatever truth it manages to uncover. Let’s substitute the word ‘fact’ for ‘real’. Evolution is clearly real. Species get selected to carry on due to their ability to survive and adapt. Other species do not get selected. We have proof of this process. The Earth itself has changed, and species that survived have changed with it. There used to be an overwhelming abundance of oxygen and species roamed the Earth in the form of giants. Now, we see similar species but smaller. The adaptation to the biosphere is proof of evolution. They gained or lost traits that brought them into the future or left them behind. If a species stays the same for 5 million years, it has demonstrated it has no need to change. If a species changes, it demonstrates an ability to improve. Usually out of necessity, OR, it changes, and becomes greater than its prior form. Even becoming competitive. Thus, the ability to change being a key component in evolution. Not necessarily changing, but having the ability to change. The cockroach was not always the cockroach.

That's not really accurate. Science never claims things to be facts. It simply presents findings, and a Theory is a collection of findings melded into a deduction - based on extensive and reproducible studies. Unless we can be sure that reality in the remotest nebula, or the remotest part, obeys the thought laws of the human scientist, here and now, in his laboratory--in other words, unless reason is an absolute-- all is in ruins. Yet, those who ask me to believe this world picture also ask me to believe that reason is simply the unforeseen and unintended by-product of mindless matter at one stage of its endless and aimless becoming. Here is a flat contradiction. They ask me at the same moment to accept a conclusion and to discredit the only testimony on which that conclusion can be based. The difficulty is to me a fatal one and the fact when you put it to many scientists, far from having an answer, they seem not even to understand what the difficulty is, assures me that I have not found a mare's nest but detected a radical disease in their whole mode of thought from the very beginning. The man who has once understood the situation is compelled henceforth to regard the scientific cosmology as being, in principle, a myth; though no doubt a great many true particulars have been worked into it... 'Evolution itself is accepted by zoologists, not because it has been observed to occur or can be proved by logically coherent evidence to be true, but because the only alternative, special creation, is clearly incredible.' Has it come to that? Does the whole vast structure of modern naturalism depend not on positive evidence, but simply on a priori metaphysical prejudice?
