Correction: - It's wrong to say that Chinese and Japanese armor were heavier and offered less protection than Korean armor. That part came from a documentary that didn't state any additional sources for the claim. The armor in different countries were designed for various situations, and in the case of Korea, the dujeonggap was optimized for horse archery.

I disagree, armour ain't a very subjective thing, it's either protective or it ain't and it's either heavy or it aint, yes there are different circumstances why a particular set of armour is picked or designed but at the end of the day a set of Germanic Gothic plate mail will always be far more protective than a Japanese armour of the same era or even later eras wile weighing around the same (23-25kg)

Whether they used muskets I'm not certain- since by the time muskets came around full plate was on the decline(to a degree), though they still had wheelock pistols which heavily armored units would fire- and earlier sort of fire-arms were used while in full plate- this includes matchlocks serpentines and handgonnes.

There is always the same issue whenever a video about armor comes up. It's always about praising the armor of one culture only while bashing on others. For this it's praising Korean armor while bashing Chinese and Japanese armor. For any samurai video it's bashing European armor while praising their own armor. Always the same issue with non-factual claims, to see a video of a fair comparison of armors of different cultures is extremely rare to find

@@motorola9956while you're mostly correct early 12th century Japanese armor called the O-Yoroi consisted of a breast and backplate with plate sides and a Lamellar plates. Now this armor was VERY protective but it was heavier because they used thicker iron plates instead of hardened steel which also made it very expensive and time consuming, so much so that only the really wealthy samurai could wear them. But preference for this armor shifted from the O-Yoroi armor to Lamellar armor in the 15-16th century which consisted of smaller overlapping iron plates. This was because the Lamellar armor was more flexible, lighter and offered similar protection. Sorry for the dump, hope this helped

Your cataphrac armour wraps a person up head to legs with steel, how is that not heavier compare to Chinese Qing armour? Also if your armour makes you such an effective fighter, why didn't you invade Japan and China? Why was it the other way around? Haha.....as a Korean, I really do appreciate certain things that we made. But let's be honest. Japanese and Chinese armor were clumsy? Hell European are "clumsier" than their Asian counterparts and yet they offer a wide range of motion in the European armor. Japanese and Chinese armor is not even remotely clumsy. Even less so they don't sacrifice mobility. I'd rather say Japanese armor has more mobility than the Korean armor. I mean look at those arms! It screams mobility. It's obvious that whoever made this video clearly has no idea what it's like to be in the armor themselves. Let alone fight in them. All three countries had fascinating ways of doing battle and what they wore to battle.
@user-fz3rb3em5j
6 жыл бұрын
Id have to agree. and its not like other asian nations did not use the same type of armor. Ming and Qing chinese armies also utilized coat of plate/brigandine like armor. The one showcased in the video just happens to be a Korean version. Although i could say that Korean one looks the coolest but that may be because Im korean. However it is a clever design. Later versions of the armor was almost Coat like(1 piece design). Joseon army was largely comprised of cavalry and obviously the armor had to be comfortable for troops riding on horseback. it's coat like design also makes it warm to wear in cold Korean climates and it would take much less time to wear compared to a japanese or even a qing chinese counter part armor. I do feel like the Du Jeong Gap is more efficient in many ways whilst offering better level of protection than japanese armor. At the end of the day, people are going to develop the best thing they can with given resources. Good quality steal was not as prevalent & also war did not happen too often between different nations in east asia. Europeans in the other hand had plenty of good steal to go around and constant wars and clash of cultures which is why their armor developed further. As much as i like the du jeong gap, properly heat treated and well made European plate armor was the most advanced of it's kind. people think that they're very heavy and slow to move in but you can pretty much do anything in them and not notice the weight so much when fighting whilst having almost perfect protection from all projectile, blunt and bladed weapons. Whoever made the video clearly is very biased & has very little knowledge in this regard. If you have done any sort of martial art involving weapons and armor, im sure you'd agree with me

Actually, the Joseon (Korean) army tried to make a full metal armour instead of felt ones like this, but gave it up after all. Ryu Seongryong's "The Jingbirok" (柳成龍, 懲毖錄 (류성룡, 징비록)) was compiled in the 16th century. This book says as follows: "Japanese soldiers were skillful in handling swords and spears. We were unable to defend ourselves against their attack, because we did not have any hard, and efficient armours to guard ourselves from their attack. Therefore, we planned to build a prototype of body armours made of thick iron, with the intent to make our soldiers wearing these armours penetrate deep into our army's territory. However, as these armours were too heavy to wear, we abandoned these armours after all." In sum, the Koreans once tried body armour made of metal, but gave it up because most of them did not have enough physical strength to fight on those heavy ones. Consequently, when they once encountered the Japanese soldiers face-to-face on land, the Korean soldier, together with fabric/leather armour he put on, were supposed to be hacked into two with Japanese swords. Such a fabric (or leather) thin armour, even though some gilt-bronze spike studs were attached all over on it, had to be almost useless against the fierce stroke of Japanese heavy and huge swords. In fact, "The Jingbirok" (referred to above) says, "(Meanwhile,) the Japanese soldiers were infantrymen. Their swords were extremely sharp, and were 35 to 47 inches long. They furiously wielded these swords right and left to cut down riders and horses altogether. Therefore, there was no way to repulse their fierce attacks."

When Military textbook of the Joseon kingdom were direct copies of Ming dynasty, when Ming was the main force that drove the Japanese out during the imjin war that’s why they are stone pillars all over Korea at thanked Ming for the “remake of the Korean tributary”, same reason why you used the Ming calendar 200 years after the fall of the Ming dynasty to the Qing, same reason you tried to train 100000 troops to assist overthrowing the Qing and bring back Ming and failed. How insecure do you have to be to make stuff up like that😂

korean armor dujoengap is very similar to the Chinese armor of the Ming dynasty Qing dynasty, how does the Korean version offer lighter weight and more protection? If you only know Korean history and understands little about others stop the comparison game. It is so cringy to look at, and you should be shamed by your audacity.

Hwacha Nation answer my question if we both have the same type of armor how is the Korean lighter than the Chinese one
@hwachahistorychannel1617

It's not the same type of armor. Each country is suited for their needs. Korea usually fought northern cavalry nomads, so they needed light, arrowproof armor for cavalry. Chinese often fought infantry, especially peasant rebels, and needed heavier armor for infantry for use against spears, but was not as good for anti-cavalry archer combat.

If you ever played Mount and Blade you'd know what he was saying. There's many different ways to do warfare, an army of horse archers will out pace and rain arrows on an infantry based army until they are weak enough for the lancers to clear the scraps, unless the infantry creates a phalanx and forces cavalry to ride into a group of troops.

Ah hahahaha! I got a very fundamental question here! If Korea had such an armor in those days, why did Chosun soldiers wore crappy armor? What happened to Great Korea???
@OfficialMINIm
7 жыл бұрын
It is the same case it was for the Japanese. High ranking samurais with money could afford great lamellar/scale armor with iron plates. The rest of the common soldiers wore cheaper armor made of tatami, wood and thick paper. It was the same thing for the Koreans and any country in medieval times. Armor was extremely expensive equipment. Now I know what you're gonna say next. Then why did the Koreans lose to the Japanese when they invaded by force? It's because in the time of the invasions, Korea had corrupt governments and weakened military and the country didn't exploit the riches that were brought in from outsiders like the Japanese did earlier. this video talks of armor and armor alone. Much of Japanese armor were made from Korean technology stolen/transferred from kaya/baekjae daynasties in earlier periods like 4 to 6 century.. Now again I knew you're gonna deny this. But truth is, Japan had very little iron ores and they were poor in quality. They developed quicker in Korea
@OfficialMINIm

And that my friend is historical fact.. Every culture has its golden ages and its ups and downs. There's no need to put another down. It's all in the past now. Korea just happened to have more iron ores and influenced by the Chinese more so. When people think of warriors of Asia, people think of the samurais of Japan. Korea had very advanced technologies which made great weapons and armor. But a lot has been erased and stolen by the Japanese when they invaded. Because the Japanese couldn't bare to have anyone more superior than them nearby. Just like the nazis. It's unfortunate past
