Several years back I made a short, fulldome, planetarium version of the evolutionary sequence for a close binary star system. The sequence is not complete because the project started from scratch and had to be completed within the course of one semester. Development included writing a script, conferring with astronomers, writing the code to generate graphics, producing the audio, and doing the modeling/animation. It was designed to be used in an introductory astronomy class at the college level. Because of that I went to great lengths to make sure what you see is scientifically accurate. Even so, the accretion disk sucks, the resolution is low, and the audio is a little out of sync.
The entire project was done in 2007 using Softimage XSI with Mental Ray renderer. To save time, it was originally rendered out at only 1000px X 1000px for fulldome projection. The warping you see is due to the way the video was rendered; it was meant to be projected on a curved planetarium dome. When viewed on a dome it looks better.
Part 2 was never completed, but now that I have a little more experience I am tempted to redo the whole thing using better quality graphics.
