When I say "Lightning Squadron", it's because I recorded it before I realized "éclairage" actually means "lightening" which is a synonym for "scouting" lol. "Scouting" is the proper translation as written on screen. Also note for the late 1980s period at 1:09 , 4 out of France's 20 tank regiments had 4 tank squadrons rather than the normal 3, or 70 tanks rather than the normal 53. These were 1er régiment de Cuirassiers (1st Division), 6ème régiment de Dragons (1st Division), 3ème régiment de Dragons (3rd Division), and 12ème régiment de Cuirassiers (3rd Division)

While I agree on a content basis, KZitem really hates videos that do not do well. So, in order for YT not to punish the whole main channel for having underperforming videos, you want a split from a reach perspective.
@BattleOrder2

It also makes it harder to negotiate for sponsorships when there are some low view videos mixed in. And I feel like with the main channel I want to put in a lot of time that may not be worth it from a financial perspective. A normal video takes at least 1-2 weeks to make, this one took two days.

Very good. Just to clarify the mid to late 80's organization: the protection platoon part of each tank squadron included an infantry platoon mounted on VABs (VAB T20/13's were mostly found in recon units, this was a ad hoc modification using scavenged turrets from decommissioned AMX 13 VTT troop transports). This was the way tank units were given infantry to help clear cities or other very close terrain. Under the prior organization (pre-1984) they were mounted on AMX 10Ps or AMX 13 VTTs, with a different organization. Another tidbit: recon units (the French distinguish between "découverte" - long range recon - and "éclairage" - more traditional recon) were fairly heavily armed: part of the unit had Milans, but the rest carried 89mm AT rocket launchers (as many in a 25- odd pax recon platoon as in a 39 pax infantry platoon) and MGs mounted on their P4s or Jeeps.

Whenever going to 3 crew tanks with an autoloader comes up, we hear objections that there won't be enough people to stand watch or do maintenance, and what if the tank platoon is understrength? The VBLs are an interesting solution. The extra troops don't need to be physically in the tanks to help out on these tasks, and they can be replacement crews. The extra armor volume needed for a human loader adds several tons to each tank, too. I can see that 4 ~60 ton Abrams and a JLTV or two would be easier to move around than 4 70 ton Abrams. This is also one of the things I think is odd about the KF51 Panther. Why have a drone operator in the tank, if the EW is so bad you can't communicate with a drone carrier a few km away, how were you going to operate a drone in the first place?

Additional different kind of vehicles only make it more difficult. You can still achieve the goals for armor protection and it doesn't take 10 tons more to protect one guy more
@BattleOrder2
Жыл бұрын
Yeah the VBL dudes help out with maintenance. Before the integrated VBL-Leclerc platoons, Leclerc squadrons had that direct support/protection platoon with autocannon armed VABs. In addition to providing mounted and dismounted security to the tanks and train elements, helping the tanks disengage, at the time I’ve read those guys were capable of acting as replacement tank crews as well (not sure if VBL crews can do this)

5:52 drones and electronic warfare will be used mostly in special units like the 13e RDP (13th Airborne Dragoon Regiment) or 1er RHP (1st Airborne Hussar Regiment). The need is less significant in so-called "regular" troops as those missions will be, if they aren’t already, assured by artillery and signals regiments.

Thanks! And they don't have extra scouting elements anymore. Starting around 2008, they were pretty much put on the same organizations. Since 2016 both Leclerc and AMX-10RC regiments have had 3 combat squadrons (leclerc/amx-10rc), 2 recon & intervention squadrons and 1 command and logistics squadron. This issue of Cavalerie from Oct 2015 talks about it: www.unabcc.org/app/download/21411275/Cavalerie+octobre+2015.pdf Although some regiments are losing one of their recon and intervention squadrons. So sad France only has about 250 Leclercs left out of 400. The other 150 seem to be mothballed/reserved for canibalism for spare parts. At least the VBLs got upgraded to the Ultima variant with more armour and new engines but due to the weight increase are no longer amphibious capable.
