Upon finishing the game, David Crane showed it to his contemporaries and boldly declared, "I have given them but ONE Pitfall Harry to complete their quest! Ha!" But they were not amused. They told him it would simply be too difficult. So after much cajoling he was convinced and spent the next MONTH reorganizing and fine-tuning the code - by hand - so that he could fit that last bit of program wizardry into the final masterpiece. But seriously, programmers of today have it made in so many ways. They have vastly superior development tools (versus graph paper, calculators and the programmer's mind) and resources within the platform itself (gigabytes of RAM, super fast processors and co-processors, etc). The Atari 2600 had only 128 bytes - yes, BYTES - of RAM and 4k of ROM (up to 8k but silicon was expensive as heck back then) so every byte had to be fought for. Some people might be wondering, as many people did when this game was released in 1982, how in the world did David Crane fit over 200 screens into only 4k of space (plus the game code and sound, etc)? The secret lies in a bi-directional binomial counter that he had devised that would output a pseudo-random 8 bit number if you fed it a "seed" byte and - here's the clever bit - would return the previous number if you did it the other way around. So when you moved to the right, for example, the counter would be advanced by one new "random" number and if you went left, that current number would be used as the seed and it would return the previous value. If you were below ground, where the scorpions are, it would iterate 5 times instead of one (underground screens equaled 5 above ground screens). Each byte was divided into bits or bit pairs that determined if a particular screen had a pit/no pit, vine/no vine, logs/no logs and so on. Genius.

Agreed. When I first saw it, after hiring it from a Video Ezy store...I'd seen the predecessors, and they were all a bit before my time. This was a great update and way to bring the series back into the limelight. Excellent character animations, environments, musical score and a nice range of weapons and enemies. I remember it being better and more fun than the 16-bit Indiana Jones game. Kind of too bad the series never really LIFTED from that point IMO...just style changes...none have been as good a game if you ask me.

im so sad that there was never a continuation after the lost expedition.. really loved that game.. im imagining since early 2000s were all about edge that if they ever were to have made one back then it would be an edgy version lol like how jak 2 and sonic went edgy xD

better than the one shown because it's the Atari 2600 CONSOLE version, but NOT better than the Atari 8bit family COMPUTER version (600-800-XL-XE-XEGS), which is THE BEST contemporary 8-bit version.
