Fascinating. Before I was a Christian, I suffered from autobiographical and self focused thoughts. I attributed it to ADHD, but since I changed, so did the symptoms. This was even a long time after doing psychedelics.

This video is disturbingly relevant to my life currently, in a good way lol. I left Islam years ago and since then my intellectual wellbeing has increased. I know longer had to stress about reconciling contradictions and defending antiquated claims, I felt free from the duty to be an apologist. But unfortunately my mental wellbeing deteriorated since then. Maybe it was because I was younger back then, but nevertheless my religious days, before doubt crept in, were a much happier time. I had a life narrative I followed and every moment was imbued with meaning, every question had an answer. After my deconversion, I felt alone and like I was drifting aimlessly in a void. I had a tussle with nihilism and at one point it almost got the best of me. I can’t deny that some days I would ask myself why I had done this to myself, why did I go out of my way to tear down the religious veil that was shielding me from purposelessness? But I always concluded that given how my mind is, it’s insatiable thirst for intellectual stimulation, this fate was an inevitability. The pandemic really hit me hard mentally. Any distractions I used to make me temporarily forget about the hole in my spirit were taken from me because of the lockdown. For two years I had to truly be with myself and face what I tried to hide from. Its been hell these past few years, a lot of depression and suicide ideation, and now I’m taking meds for an anxiety disorder. But recently I’ve gotten into idealism and pantheism/panentheism. It’s gradual but I do feel a spiritual reawakening. Things are clicking for my rational mind and for the first time in years I noticed how I’m unconsciously recognizing God in my reality. It’s a subtle change but has done wonders in giving me a sense of transcendence from my current circumstance. I no longer feel completely bound to the temporary, now I can once again fill my mind with hope and desires for the future. I guess I am one of these intrinsically spiritual people you speak of, and I’ve been unknowingly starving myself of vital nourishment for years. I tried materialism but instead of explaining things, it personally led me to dead ends. Now I feel like I’m on my way up again and no longer feel trapped in space and time. Pardon me if this seemed a bit rambly, I was typing this while being half asleep lol

I would recommend you to read the Bhagavad Gita even if you don't believe in god it has very practical applications to combine spiritual life with materialistic life. I have been reading it for the past few months and found it really helpful in exploring my consciousness and to get more out of my material life without really having any kind of belief in a higher power outside of me

This is such an amazing deep dive into such a common phenomenon that many of us truly take for granted. My wife and I are both non-believers but she would like to say that she is more spiritual than religious while I am in outright atheist but I understand a lot of what goes into that mode of thinking to make one want to take on that label of spiritual. I'm an artist but I have also studied in science in the University and I train and teach gymnastics as well as mixed martial arts and I love to dance. The flow state is definitely something I find myself in and I have also been subject to maladaptive daydreaming. I feel this video speaks to me so deeply on so many levels. Thank you so much for sharing your insight on this topic.

I need to thank you. I had a problem understanding atheism. I was even aware of the bias of the philosophy in the enlightment times, where epistemology was first philosophy. But still couldnt manage to grasp something about atheism. I still couldnt grasp how someone could not be spiritual. I still had juxtaposed the meanings of my concepts that verse about language and the 'spirit', I didnt have devolped the idea that there were biological factors and thus, language and the spiritual capacity were still together. With this in mind, now i can see atheism with new eyes and feel sad and guilty. I was understanding and enjoying the explanation, but I really felt it when you mentioned the examples of the guys waking of from the matrix. They were so radical about something they didnt even have the capacity to perceive. I felt so sad and guilty for not considering such scenario. Like, these people have been through life: "what the hell is everybody talking about", literally because they do not feel the 'spirit'. And i couldnt understand because i was assuming the experience was natural and i cannot un-see it. I was still thinking it epistemologically despite knowing it wasnt enough. I was trying to work out a thesine at school conveying topics similar to this, like, i was trying to discover for myself what was philosophically behind this "spirit", by writing the investigation. Your argumentation helped me immeasurably, so systematic, not like old metaphysic times, but in the sense of the fluidity between topics and how you relate them, is my favorite way of understanding and studying philosophy, like grasping multiple disciplines and elevating it to a meaningful whole. This has helped me on a life level, makes me see my own spirituality better, in short, i get to know myself more. I dearly thank your effort.

This video elegantly articulates many of the incomplete thoughts that I've been trying to form ever since I started rediscovering spirituality through a neutral lens since my deconversion from Christianity. Amazing job, this is the sort of content that isn't just entertainment but informed nourishment for the soul. If I were a Christian I would say you are doing God's work, but to me this work is much greater than God ever was.

@@Clickle which Christian narrative of God? A magical sky daddy that will listen to all your problems like in Protestantism? A reincarnated human like in Mormonism? An almighty being that uses natural processes such as evolution to create humanity as in Catholicism? Or the source for all being that fills the hierarchy of existence like in Orthodoxy? The last one is my favorite and seems to make the most sense with its more mystical and philosophical interpretations

I have a question: apparently, a person with schizophrenia would be less spiritual because it would be harder to enter the flow state and thus self-forget, however, the delusions of a schizophrenic person almost always have religious elements attached to them and grant a greater meaning to the life a schizophrenic person (assuming the schizophrenic person doesn't commit suicide quickly). Does this contradiction have more to it than my understanding?

I've never met a spiritual person that wasn't narcissistic, malignant, maladaptive, neurotic, promiscuous, submissive in a presentation, and wilfully ignorant. Who I've meet eventually their presence disrupts group activities and cause dysfunction. Who've I've meet behave like a drug addict searching for peace and paradoxically are always disturbing the peace by always pointing out peace and making a celebration and objectifying it. And they're cult like behavior is a turn off. Occult and parapsychological fanatics. Maybe those are the ideological types but I never meet a spiritual person that was healthy in a group dynamic. And they don't shut up.

I know what you are talking about...I know those types too and I would argue they are not the genuinely spiritual kinds. I don't know how it is in your case, but all such people in my life turned out to have some sort of personal disorder or fighting some sort of mental illness...and I think when it comes to narcissists especially, given how spirituality (just as the maker of the video has pointed out) brings no moral accountability with it, manipulators will dress up in the robes of spirituality, as it has become a very fashionable piece these days. I think a genuinely spiritual person would not make a big deal out of his/her spirituality...it would show in subtle ways and only for those who actually know them personally...or at least that's my experience.

Very good video. however while people with PTSD are not capable of self forgetfulness (or actually its just harder for them) they are capable of mysticism just as much as those who don't have that problem. Now that might suggest mysticism and self forgetfulness are not that closely related. however what I find much more likely is that mysticism because it is connected to self forgetfulness mysticism helps in bringing out self forgetfulness and self transcendence in those for who it is harder to achieve such as those with PTSD. However while I do agree that there is both biological and evolutionary reasons for spirituality, spirituality is more than just antidepressant that evolved only for this specific reason. I don't know if God or Gods exist however there are things that can't be measured simply by our five basic senses. and every assumption is just that assumption scientific evidence gives validity that this assumption is correct however we can only evaluate certain portion of information so while scientific evaluation increases the chances of something being a fact it is not necessarily the objective truth or a correct interpretation of the truth. lets take something as scientifically absolute as second law of thermodynamics. which states that isolated system always goes to state of increasing entropy. Now as far as we know that is true however even here we have some uncertainties. for example our understanding on what that means was incorrect. because it was understood that meaning of it is that in absolutely all cases electrons find themselves in lowest possible state of energy that there is no temperature lower than 0 degrees Kelvin and that heat always goes from hot to cold. And while in most cases this is true there are exceptions to that. there are temperatures lower than 0 degrees Kelvin even if that does not mean that electrons move in speed lesser than 0 but rather than the temperature is kind of infinitely hot however under those circumstances electrons actually go to highest state of energy rather than the lowest as it normally is and heat travels from cold to hot in this very rare exception rather than from hot to cold as it does in every other known instance. what I'm getting at is there is always more to learn and even things that seem absolutely impossible from a completely rational point of view and make perfect logical sense given information given aren't always true and probably never a full picture. And we will never have all information that exists because that is impossible (at least that is what I believe, although if you are both nothing and all maybe you may get all the theoretical possibilities as well) also because it is almost impossible that humans are ultimate point in evolution there are things we are not capable of understanding but that does not mean that they don't exist (or that their existence is scientifically unsound) Also definition of supernatural can be understood in more than one way. the world super means above or beyond natural means nature. but does it mean beyond all things that exist or does it mean beyond all things that we know exist. there are instances where people who lost their sight were able to predict locations of lost objects that they never encountered themselves with more than 85% accuracy. even if they had no information about the objects possible location. now there is probably perfectly logical explanation for something like that even if the person had no visual auditory or olfactory information about it and not enough secondary knowledge to figure it out they had sense in their brain that normally isn't used that has awaken in them quite possibly because their loss of sight therefore need to rely on different sense. now from certain point of view this could be considered supernatural and at the time it was she was actually believed to be a heretic and other nonsense because of that. and even now no one knows how she did it even if most likely it is something perfectly natural its just beyond of what we know as nature. same things can be true in case of spirits

Wrong. You're manipulatively selecting material to construct a frame that you want. You're quite right that the universe doesn't care about our wars. Read that again. It doesn't care about our loves and friendships; about the smiles of babies; about the victims of auto-da-fés or pogroms - not even the Final Pogrom; about the sufferings caused by smallpox, etc. Speaking strictly for myself, I am very grateful that the allies cared enough about personal concerns to fight two world wars. Hitchens argued on personal angles for the Iraq war, and Faisal Saeed Al Mutar testifies to the improvements brought about by the war. Distracting us from victims' personal sufferings with transpersonal gobbledegook is among the more effective tools of evil people like Hitler and Stalin. There is a vast difference between on the one hand sharing the wonderful news that there are no gods as Hitch did (how atrocious of you to purloin his eloquence), and on the other spreading the "good news" (eu angelion) that a virgin-born water-walker wants slaves to obey their masters, children to hate their parents and vice versa, and that the end of the world is coming within the lifetime of his audience. That difference is yet another thing that the universe doesn't care about, but more and more humans thankfully do. As Nietzsche wrote: "There is not enough love and kindness in the world to permit us to give any of it away to imaginary beings." (Human, All Too Human.) Or, I add, to give it to terrible connections our ancestors drew about the universal "breath" not caring about the sufferings of our mental "breath". But I'm wasting my effort here, aren't I? You don't appear to read late comments.
