I remember he often played in the same Men’s Opens tournaments as me in Orlando, Florida and he would always win them easily. As far as how out of practice he is, no one ever won a set against him in these tournaments and he played against people above 5.0. I’m also a 5.0 btw.

And even in his prime, he will hardly get even 1 set from a top 50 player, man really show how hard going pro in sport is.

That's just ridiculous. I know he's been playing pickleball at a high level and all, but still, for not playing for a year that's just insane. Thanks for sharing the match!

@@DillPlays i think I’ve watched before but mostly I’ve followed you on IG I think. I live in Japan and am a probably(?) nearing 4.0 (really don’t know b/c they don’t use any objective ranking system here and I didn’t play in the US). Anyway always enjoy your content. Your skill is inspiring. You just play so clean. Not sure I’ll ever get to 5.0 but hoping to hit 4.5 level! 💪🏻

Been waiting patiently for this one! Did not disappoint. You can tell even with the rust Medina is a beast! There were a couple passing shots that just did not make sense 😂. Dill you were no slouch out there, technically won the 2nd set in fast 4 format 😂. Forehand was ripping I liked it!

They did not make sense to me either hence my reactions in multiple moments in the match LOL. Next time I will play better for sure and yes we played a short set and I was able to get a couple games under my belt

Wouldn't say it looks like he's not trying, more like he's very stiff, awkward, and out of practice. Which would make sense if this is the first time he's touched a racket in a year. For me the fact that he still manages to win the first set so convincingly despite how uncomfortable he looks hitting the ball just highlights the sheer separation in level between pros and high level amateurs. Really interesting to watch, I definitely haven't had the opportunity to see a pro hit like this before. Thanks for uploading 🫡
@james-tennis
Жыл бұрын
Nah I think he wasn't trying, at least on returns. Just sliced every return back easily when usually the serve pace didn't warrant that.
@andrewfinkelsteintennis1915
Жыл бұрын
That's what really not trying looks like! He's just blocking the ball and playing a lot of shots well below his capability. He's lowering his level and still dominating.
@baller7387
Жыл бұрын
@@andrewfinkelsteintennis1915 Don't think I agree with that. It's incredibly difficult if not impossible to intentionally look awkward/out of practice when playing tennis. And playing like that certainly isn't what "not trying" looks like. The far more reasonable and logical explanation is that, as was stated in the vid, he hadn't played in a year and was very rusty
@baller7387
Жыл бұрын
@@james-tennis I would agree that the slice return may not always have been the best option, but it was effective enough in this match. If I were to speculate, I would say he was returning that way bc he felt more comfortable doing so. On the whole, for me his movement looked a bit robotic and he was very upright. I think this is part of the reason why he had some issues with timing and wasn't getting much power on his shots over the course of extended rallies, although he did hit some nice flat winners with solid power. He just looked like someone that hadn't played in awhile, which checks out considering he apparently hadn't played in a year, lol
@nsebast

I think he plays more pickleball than tennis nowadays that's why he's so rusty. If he plays tennis regularly, Dill will have no chance winning a set.

I remember Jhonnatan Medina since the time he was a coach at a Hiawassee Tennis Club in Orlando…when he still had long hair…😂. He also used to play some prized tournaments in Florida, and he was a beast…His calmness, court and ball control were incredible. His slice was something else. He barely knew me, but every time that he saw me around he used to say “hi Spaniard!” Very nice guy. Good luck Venezuelan! Say hello to your brother as well.

@@DillPlays Which is really sad. The Tennis Federations need to do a better job supporting the players on the tour. They need to realize that the ALL THE PLAYERS AND NOT THE TOP RANKED ONES keep the sport alive and in the minds of the public. Without all of them tennis is nothing.

Very strange techniques from the Ex ATP guy. One minute he swings like Ivan Lendl (esp the backhand), then the next back to more modern time. The way he approaches the net is also weird, it looks like he is thinking about the 'kitchen' line or something. Don't play pickleball folks. If it does this to an Ex ATP, imagine what it will do to you!
