I grew up in an IFB church/school I’m 52 and still struggle to believe that God loves me just as I am. When you are taught for years that if you don’t go to church every time the door is open, read your Bible enough, go soul winning, give money to the church, live basically the perfect example of a “Christian “ you’re not right with God and anything bad that happens in your life is because you’re not right and God is trying to teach you a lesson. I know of at least 3 faculty members in the church or school that molested girls or had an affair with a younger woman in the church and nothing was done ! They were simply given a good reference to move on to another IFB church or school. You would hear whispers of what they had been “accused” of but of course the girl was lying, in the case of the affair it was swept under the rug. For years I believed that God didn’t like me and that was why I couldn’t conceive a baby, my dad died from cancer, my sister in law died and other major things I prayed about always went unanswered, God was trying to tell me I was unacceptable and therefore didn’t hear my prayers. I literally was afraid to pray for a sick loved one because God would take them to teach me a “lesson” about how I wasn’t living good enough for him to answer my prayers. These churches and schools ruin peoples lives !

Regarding legalism and authoritarian pastors, I highly recommend the novel Wisdom Hunter by Randall Arthur. It seems to be the premiere novel illustrating the destructiveness of authoritarian leaders. It's an international bestseller. Many call it a “classic.” I understand that the author was even fired from his mission agency because of the novel.

This message is so needed. I am not IFB but my culture was exactly, point by point, the same. Guilt. Abuse. Control. Rules. Secrets. So much abuse that still has never healed. Most of my family is still immersed in this culture. The wounds are so very deep. Consider expanding your stories to other conservative systems.

Please be care to not lump all Independent Baptist churches into the same categories. There are different leaderships in other locations of the United States. Many pastors have given their lives to reach out in compassion and love to preach salvation by grace through faith and then baptize new belivers. These preachers would never do these terrible things. My heart goes out to this lady, and her sad situation that she experienced. May God bless her special and lift her up!!! Amen.!!!

I'm not a religious person. I grew up in a catholic family, but I never fit in. I was asking all of the wrong questions (for them) when I was 5 and was out at 13 when my parents got divorced. I've been trying to learn about the effects of the conditioning of different fundamentalist religions because I have a friend who grew up in that environment and has left but has a whole heap of struggles understanding the world even now. I'm also a sexual abuse/abuse survivor and have already been pissed at the world for the super light sentences on abusers because they are "promising young men" and "one mistake shouldn't ruin a man's life" while the courts and society victim blame and ask the victims what they are wearing and what they were doing to entice the attacks in the first place. The first time anything happened to me I was 11. The way fundamentalism seems to work IS a grooming process. It seems to indocternate kids and adults to expect blame to fall on females and victims as well as teach males that they not only don't have any accountability, but it should be expected that females need to satisfy their needs without questioning it. Humans are not property. I'm learning a lot about my own struggles watching everyone's stories and how much (at 42) I'm still learning to challenge how I was raised and why it is so very common to look at someone who has been abused in any way and ask that person "Well, how were you asking for it?" instead of being their ally and taking the abusers down as communities.

I went to first Baptist Hammond when I was in training for the navy. They would pick me up at Great Lakes with a school bus. Jack schaap was the pastor then. I was raised in southern Baptist churches , rather serious ones .... so nothing really seemed out of the ordinary to me at the time . I attended another small independent Baptist church in Jacksonville Florida while I was stationed there in the navy. It wasn’t until just a few months ago that I had even heard about the schaap incident years ago.... from a friend of mine who was an IFB. Wow.... it’s hard to fathom those things actually happened ..... I enjoyed my time at Hammond .... but even while I was there I’ve always been fearful of churches that size .... just seems like trouble to me. I can tell you , no behavior mentioned here would be tolerated at any southern Baptist church I’ve been to.... and I’ve seen youth pastors run off more than once just for being accused of it ....

Not all Independent Baptist churches are like the ones described on this broadcast. There are many great churches that believe in sound doctrine and love people and are kind. So please don't lump all these churches into the same categories. As far as Jack Kyle's, all I know is the things that have been shared. I have to believe that there must be some terrible tragedies beyond what would normally be believable or credible. But there are great pastors who are independent and we're not associated with Jack Kyle's or his college. I have been around some great Godly Christian people who were independent Baptist, in a different group of churches. Careful with your bundling all in the same category. God bless.!!!

Our worship is modelled on the New Testament church. The bible, the inspired word of GOD gives us the form and content. Where does CHRIST command the use of "youth ministers"? Where does CHRIST tell us that one pastor should shepherd the flock of GOD?

Not part of the IFB but I do believe they tend to overdue it with Holiness and other things which I disagree with and are more legalistic in their approach to the believers every day life, the only reason I’m aware of IFB is because of a KZitemr that has a channel called Spencer Smith but I don’t know if his church congregation is this strict in their approach seeing that the IFB is a loosely connected network of independent churches

The leadership is fully infiltrated, but there are some decent congregants in the mix. Now that exposure is really ramping up, the real Christ-followers will stop giving their time, attention & money to pedophiles & drop 501 mystery religion status. Jesus wasn't a denomination tied to the state. The Acts model of church wasn't a hybrid. There's a jursidiction problem when you're under the authority of a principality...& people wonder why their prayers don't accomplish anything. The 'church' needs to grow a serious pair right now.

I keep seeing other videos in this cache with titles like "spiritual abuse". What i went through was far more than that. It was physical and mental abuse also on top of possibly making one doubt Christian values and possibly sending them the wrong way... im a guy by the way. Should have graduated with a real diploma in 1994. I graduated in 1997 with a GED. And yes, the repetitive nature of inaction on their part was the most damaging aspect. Not just inaction, but trying to place blame on me and pretending that i had mental disability and even being basically forced on meds and going to mental doctors like Dr. Winters and given rorschach tests and crap. There was nothing wrong with me, i was miserable at school because of bullys in it!!! PERIOD. The faculty was well aware of it too, and the day i fought back i got a whipping in the office for defending myself! Rech heard the conversation! He was there listening to the whole thing hiding outside the locker room probably laughing at me! These people were sick.

She mentioned non regulated homes in the IFB. I think that thought process is flawed. The State is NOT a righteous corporation and only unrighteous, non God principles. I think though that there is room for God's people to provide accountability. Accountability should not be to an unsaved world that does not care, understand or believe the Gospel and the truths of the Bible.... I worked for a Corporation that had an open door policy that provided accountability for its employees. The answer is not accountability to an unsaved world that has disdain for any that names the name of Jesus Christ.

Both are equal victims? I was oppressed by my IFB college that had rules...this is nonsense. There must be a clear distinction of what IFB abuse is and what it is not.

The Bible is the story of Yahweh's fulfilled plan of redemption given exclusively to ancient Israelites under the curse of the Old Covenant Law of sin and death and pertains to no alive today. Today's self-appointed, self-professing "Christians" have been hoodwinked into believing they're sinners under a Law that passed away, and need a savior who said he came for someone else, who will save them from a sin that's already been removed and a judgement that already happened and allow them into a covenant that was made with someone else. The fact is, we today were never and are not part of ancient Israel's redemptive narrative, the Bible. ~Michael Bradley
