Meanwhile it’s likely that you are doing other less severe/immediate forms of self-harm during those times and maybe not even recognizing it as self-harm? I could be wrong, but I wonder if that is the case. And THAT is why the original video about different types of self-harm was created-to help people understand that self harm is not just a black and white, narrowly defined set of behaviors.

I do that with eating too, I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I'll go without eating for let's say a week, and then I'll eat something and feel pretty good afterwards but then I'll be like "why am I eating??" "I was on a roll I could've set a new personal record" and then I'll feel guilty and stop eating for literally no reason besides when I do eat, I feel guilty. Does any of that make sense to you guys? Things such as starving yourself or overdosing on tablets but knowing it won't kill you I think should be considered as self harm as I think the intention is definitely there. The issue with having such a strict definition is that there is many people who do things to harm themselves without breaking body tissue. Ofc this is just my opinion, love your videos ☺️☺️

I also wanna put here that I think that things such as eating disorders are not self harm, as typically the intent is not to harm oneself. I have a “strange” form of self destruction . I’ve starved, but it was short. I eat a lot less than usual and I hate my body. When I get overwhelmed I end up with a pair of sewing scissors in my hand, since they are so small and dull, they do not break skin, I don’t bleed and no scars stay. Not at all. The whole point of the video was to highlight that there are more ways to “self-harm” than the narrow definition of cutting or burning oneself, or other ways that lead to immediate damage to body tissues. That’s an extremely narrow definition and leaves many with the impression that their mental health may be more intact than it is, simply because they are not choosing those methods to harm themselves. It’s more about the intention-are you deliberately trying to inflict pain or suffering on yourself? I think that with more indirect methods it can still be intentional, although less conscious than more directly harmful behaviors.
@elizabethtodd27

I would argue that these examples *ARE* self-harm, BUT they are definitely not Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI). In general, NSSI and "self-harm" are used interchangeably, but NSSI is a very specific type of self-harm. That could be why they used such a generic definition at the beginning of their video.
@Danielle-nz9tn

i get there is a difference between self injury and yadda yadda. but you should realize that its not just self destructive behavior and such. the negative affects of forced insomnia and sleep deprivation do cause PHYSICAL damage to a person therefore classifying it as self harm or self injury. It doesn't matter if it takes time to show, bruises can take awhile to form but it's considered self harm? I don't understand. And please explain how over exercising isn't considered self injury when you are physically hurting yourself immediately. By making yourself sore and causing pain to the muscles and joints? Basically what I'm hearing is that if you don't cause damage to your body within 2 seconds of hurting yourself, it's not self harm? That's just plain stupid. There are a lot of ways that are self harm but because they don't want to go over all that cause it's too much work they'll say it's self destructive and shove it to the side. Thanks for letting me know.

This type of misconceptions made me start on sh at quite an early age, ever since I can remember I’ve had self-neglecting habits no one ever bothered to change. After researching and asking myself why I was that different from other kids I found dozens of websites comparing or even calling my self destructive habits to self harm, after that I just straight up started self harming and ever since then I haven’t been able to stop. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have started sh later in life if I didn’t found that article but a kid should never have to feel the helplessness one feels while self harming
@Danielle-nz9tn
3 жыл бұрын
It seems that your harmful and neglectful behaviors as a kid were not recognized and/or not addressed and that this led to you moving to more severe self-harming behavior such as non-suicidal self-injury? To me, that speaks to the importance of recognizing that anyone engaging in any kinds of behaviors that are harmful to self are AT RISK and need help immediately. The label “self harm” is appropriate for a wide variety of behaviors, not only the most specific and severe ones such as cutting or burning or otherwise damaging one’s physical body tissues. It’s the same reasoning used in definitions of child abuse, which is not only physically injuring a child but also severe neglect, such as not feeding the child or tending to other essential needs.

I would argue that some of these are a form of self harm.. However ! I understand that you've used a more specific definition and they have not, which in turn, does actually make all the difference in which it is or "isn't" a form of self harm. I think had they changed the title, it would've been okay. I also think it's safe to say that the terms self harm and self injury can be and are used interchangeably but I also think they have their slight differences (self harm-harming the body deliberately) (self injury-deliberately causing injury to the body). However, they both can be used when talking about the same/similar subject, I think it just depends on the person you talk to. I think this was a good video overall, it definitely has some educational components and I can see that you tried to be as accurate as possible. This reaction is definitely more opinioned based and that's fine ! I relapsed after reaching out to my loved one about my urge to selflharm... his response was simply ‘that’s childish’ so I was offended and maybe was ranting, he just said ‘sleep well’ and hung up... so I went to bed... at 6pm, just so I wouldn’t see him if he came home from work... and relapsed because emotions were too severe and medication didn’t work soon enough and I had the knowledge I need to wait for them to work instead of taking extra. We should train ourselfs not to let any kind of talk, not the words, nor the tone spoken, nor the intention of what is said, hurt ourself. Not even loved ones are save all the time with interactions so train to keep that protective wall of dissolving the words and their (unintentional) weight. Train that protective wall as a breathable bandaid too. Dilute the words that Might hurt without isolating yourself merely just in case someone might hurt us.

I’ve seen people discussing eating disorders and whatnot, but I wonder what you think about using sex as a means to harm yourself. Does it count? I would say yes, especially if you’re letting someone be rough or inflicting pain/harm on you without getting pleasure from it yourself. I know it’s not exactly self-inflicted, but for me and many others this has been a way to let harm come to oneself and seeking it out. Like, if you let someone unintentionally harm you, is that self harm? Other examples: jumping in front of a car (without suicidal intent) or letting an animal scratch you
