In Spanish we use these little words a lot: me, te, lo, la, nos, los, las, le, les. These words are used to replace the people or things we are talking about.
For example, in English we say:
I cannot see Carlos or I cannot see him.
We also say
I cannot see Mary or I cannot see her.
In Spanish…
the equivalent of “I cannot see him” is “Yo no LO puedo ver”; and the
equivalent of “I cannot see her” is “Yo no LA puedo ver”.
LO and LA replace the person I cannot see. LO is -him, and LA is -her.
These little words, which often appear in Spanish before the action, allow us to avoid unnecessary repetition of the person or thing we are talking about, making communication clearer and more concise.
These little words are known as direct object and indirect object pronouns.
