08 July 24
Armed with a Northern Rail £10 day ticket, bought with vouchers kindly donated by a subscriber, plus a ticket to Leeds, I set off on a long circular tour with stops off at Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly.
The extra ticket was needed for my travel on the early train over the Settle & Carlisle line to allow me to start using the Day ticket at 8:45, or soon after.
At Leeds I recorded Azumas (no 91s sadly) as well as other units at the western end of the station before getting a train to Sheffield (actually a Nottingham train).
Sheffield was much more interesting both for the trains and the location, with tunnels at each end. As expected Class 222 Meridians, Voyagers and so on. Class 66s from GBRf, Freightliner and DB Cargo represented the freight but the highlight was the Network Rail test train - I;d expected one of the long trains I'm used to at Carlisle but instead found a pale blue 153 Inspection Unit on a circuitous route from Derby to York.
My next train took me to Manchester via the Hope Valley line - the second scenic line on this trip. On entering Manchester we passed Longsight depot with an de-branded ex-TransPennine Express Class 68 plus two Nova Mark 5 train-sets also de-branded.
At Piccadilly I located myself on Platform 14, at the end of the MSJA viaduct towards Oxford Road station, through the old UMIST campus, my Alma Mater. Only passenger trains here, the Intermodal from Trafford Park, I;d hoped to see was passing through as my train from Sheffield arrived.
My plan was to take a Windermere train as far as Lancaster, record a few trains there, before getting a Manchester Airport to BArrow in Furness train to its end point and then get a Barrow - Carlisle train around the Cumbrian Coast. On my way to Lancaster I learned that the next two Barrow bound trains had been cancelled. Could I still make it around the coast. Fortunately my luck was in - sort of. Waiting in Platform 2 was a class 156 waiting for the delayed Windermere train before setting off, a little overcrowded, for BArrow and Carlisle. Once I got a seat - around Grange over Sands - the Coast line did not let me down with its fantastic views of Morecambe Bay, the Lake District mountains and the Isle of Man in the distance seen between Eskmeals and St Bees. My third scenic run!
A long day but it was fun!
