Laws are useless unless they are enforced. I have a neighbor who has one of those vehicles with the big woofers. He will play his music 11PM, 1AM, 3AM, 5AM, etc., all hours of the day, without consideration. My house is about 100 meters from his driveway. I can be sitting in my kitchen, which is in the middle of my house, doors and windows closed, and feel the boom, boom, boom. I can be sitting in the middle of my basement and, while not as strong, I can definitely tell when he is playing his music. I know neighbors have complained to him. I know he has had the cops called on him. Nothing has happened. Sound ordinances only work if they are enforced.

A lot of it is about the timing. For example, I live beside one construction site at the Meridian Arts Centre where they do construction at 3am and 5am. Why? It’s not healthy for the workers to work those weird hours, and they’re probably paying more to have the work be done then. Why can’t they do the construction during the day? I’ve also had issues where construction sites would use the cheapest, noisiest diesel generators 24/7 because they couldn’t be bothered to use quieter generators or to plug their equipment and portable offices into the electrical grid.

@Brinn848 At least construction has a purpose. And 24 hour construction is designed to end the construction and the resulting noise dramatically earlier. But I feel your pain.
@anthonymorris5084
13 күн бұрын
@Brinn848 You misunderstood. Comradery was not the goal. I simply disagreed with your assertion that construction was worse than vehicle noise, but had sympathy for you plight. To suggest that 24 hour construction is willfully "designed to disrupt" is absurd. What you fail to realize is that there are just as many people who prefer 24 hour construction so they don't have to live with "construction desinged to disrupt settled communities and establish a normative culture that no longer adheres to the common standards of decency, or the social contract witin which the government has reasonable boundaries in respect of our peace and enjoyment of our homes and liberties." for years and years and years when the construction can be shortened. There's a trade off. When it comes to construction you will never make everybody happy, but with cars, the only people who will pay the price are the people making the unnecessary noise. But forgive me, I didn't realize this was a competition.

Our technology is lagging because of our commodified survival. One long term solution could be for us to create a human-made mycorrhizal network to ENSURE safe housing, clean water, healthy food, quality education, and full health care for EVERYONE, with a system of coming to the most logical and ethical solutions quickly, and a community builder simulator/video game to plan future development to be in harmony with the Earth and with each other...so kids and adults could earn a living wage from a place where they feel safe and loved, working towards an ensured basic standard of living for everyone, while achieving self actualization in the process.

Electric leaf blowers are quiet and safer for the operator and the neighbours. They’re mandated in other cities and I think they’ve been studied in Toronto, but Council hasn’t pushed for it yet. And the backup beepers are generally considered less safe and too noisy compared to modern backup white noise devices, but the complaints were about provincial construction projects, and the province made those construction firms above the law and exempt from any community responsibility, so the city can’t do anything about that.

@@my2iu landscapers and contractors can't always use electric. They don't always have access to outlets and also sometimes have large parking lots or areas to cover. @@pacman3556 Electric leaf blowers are cordless now. You just bring a bunch of batteries with you and swap them out as you go from job to job. You don’t have to breathe in all those toxic fumes all day and you don’t have to wear ear protection (though I imagine many of those guys don’t bother and simply slowly go deaf). We’re slowly getting to the technological crossover where only those cheap landscape companies who don’t care about worker health are the ones who continue to use gas leaf blowers.
