Situations like Da'Naia's are why being single isn't an insult and being married isn't always a flex. Just because someone is married doesn't mean they're in a GOOD marriage! They're plenty of wives out here being lied to, cheated on, disrespected, embarrassed and generally mistreated. I hope black women learn to love themselves enough to stay single until they find healthy, loving relationships.
@jones2277

THIS! some people's grandmas had marriages like this throughout their youth, which is why i don't think the number of your years of marriage means very much. it's the quality, not quantity. i have an aunt who testified about her mother sticking with her abusive dad through years of abuse and cheating as if it was a triumph.

I’m soooo happy for her walking in her freedom and healing! Not many women make it! Praying continual protection and strength around her mind, peace and joy in her heart, abundance in her spirit! Morale of the story: No matter how handsome a man is, never compromise your self-respect. Never chase a man. Never move to a different state to follow a man. Never tolerate disrespect and cheating, especially before getting married. Have sexual and emotional discipline. Heal before seeking a new relationship. No matter how painful it is to walk away, do it! The probabilities of turning a cheater into a good husband are extremely low don’t think you can change a man.

I honestly feel so bad judging Da'Naia. And this interview has shown me how we have become too comfortable with social media. Too comfortable commenting. Judging. Speculating. Her story is the same story of so many Black women walking through this world. Hurt. Rejected. In pain. Simply seeking love and doing whatever they think they can to secure that love. I don't know if she will read these comments but I apologize personally for participating in the hate train. I can't even imagine how it feels to have your worst days, your lowest point, broadcast to the whole world. I pray Da'Naia finds true love and happiness one day. She's a funny, intelligent, brilliant woman who deserves it. Derrick on the other hand... I pray that God has mercy on your soul. I am not a quiet person. I have to talk things out. But, I do shut down when I am ashamed of myself. I lose my words. I cling to stillness as my thoughts race. My ex husband benefited from my shame. So, for me - it’s about creating safe spaces and having people I trust around me to preserve my energy and allow me to restore myself and find my words, practice my voice. Trauma is such a thief. It goes for broke. It steals everything you allow. So, I’m constantly addressing it and protecting it from stealing my confidence and joy, which is hard to get back. It’s been 5 years and I have times when I’m triggered by the oddest things, situations and people. I’m set to write a book about my life at that time, I’ve procrastinated on writing because I am forced to relive that dark part of my past. Today - I will find the words and shame the devil.

We've all gone through being played, lead on, cheated on, lied to, disrespected and/or staying much longer than we should have. Even in little doses, like if the situation-ship only lasted 6 months. For me, I remember my intuition telling me that something was not right with him but I let my feelings keep me hooked to him. Then I learned that just because we have feelings for someone does not mean that we have no choice except to endure disrespect.

But let’s be real the appropriate knowledge and idea of “healing” just became popular and the thing to do in the past maybe 5 or more years. We are usually told to go to church, find God, pray and get married so you’re not living in sin. So when a person is raped, and have daddy issues you go to church and try to be good, you pray but you don’t learn how and what healing is. So in the meantime you are expressing these traumas and getting in relationships that you don’t really know why you are even drawn to that person. I for one know that marriage was shoved in my face as the thing you have to do but no one ever talked about healing. In the black community families don’t talk, so although she was an adult you don’t know what you don’t know until you learn.
