Van Halen is an American rock band that was formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. The band was founded by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, his brother drummer Alex Van Halen, bassist Michael Anthony, and singer David Lee Roth. They quickly gained popularity in the late 1970s and became one of the most successful rock acts of the 1980s.
Van Halen's self-titled debut album was released in 1978 and achieved critical acclaim. It showcased Eddie Van Halen's innovative guitar playing style, which combined elements of hard rock, heavy metal, and virtuoso guitar solos. The album featured popular tracks like "Runnin' with the Devil" and a cover of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me."
The band released several successful albums throughout the 1980s, including "Van Halen II" (1979), "Women and Children First" (1980), "Fair Warning" (1981), "Diver Down" (1982), and their most commercially successful album, "1984" (1984). The album "1984" featured the hit singles "Jump," "Panama," and "Hot for Teacher" and reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart.
Van Halen experienced some lineup changes over the years. In 1985, David Lee Roth left the band and was replaced by Sammy Hagar as the lead vocalist. With Hagar, they released successful albums like "5150" (1986), "OU812" (1988), and "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" (1991). Hagar left the band in 1996 and was replaced by Gary Cherone for a brief period.
In 2007, David Lee Roth rejoined the band for a successful reunion tour, which continued into 2008. The band released their last studio album, "A Different Kind of Truth," in 2012.
