ACSM's Brown Bag Series in Science: Exercise Support for People with Type 1 Diabetes Plus Sedentary Lifestyle
Presenter: Garrett Ash is a postdoctoral fellow at the Veterans Affairs Connecticut Healthcare System and Yale University Center for Medical Informatics. His work focuses on using wearable biosensors and data analytics to build interventions that promote improved lifestyle and clinical outcomes across a wide range of populations including youth and adults with type 1 diabetes, young adults with heavy alcohol consumption, and adults with heart failure. He is also the lead organizer and proceedings author for an annual series of ACSM panels to provide input toward the International Federation of Sports Medicine’s efforts to establish a global standard for wearable devices in sport and fitness.
Consensus documents present evidence-based guidelines for exercising with type 1 diabetes (T1D) but emphasize the lack of data on self-management interventions to promote them successfully and safely among those who are sedentary. I began to address this gap with in-person group interventions which indicated the need for more scalable digital health components. Therefore, I am now utilizing a customized mobile digital application and coaches internally certified in exercise for diabetes (GlucoseZoneTM, FitscriptLLC) to deliver a remote intervention that includes personalized biosensor feedback about multiple health behaviors, their potential interaction, and responsive exercise guidance.
