I’d be willing to bet you’ve been told to squeeze your shoulder blades together before. In certain situations, it may be appropriate, but in my opinion, it is a way overused cue. Squeezing your shoulder blades together can make a winging scapula worse especially if you have scoliosis.
When you consider the convex side of scoliosis, it is rotated, and the ribcage rounds out further than a symmetrical spine would. The shoulder blade that rests on top of the rib cage loses its congruency causing it to tip forward and wing away from the body. It might help to think of it as a puzzle piece trying to fit into the wrong spot.
Doing scapular retractions and rows likely won’t help you much if you have a winged scapula and scoliosis.
A few months ago, I received a DM from someone on Instagram asking if I have any videos on improving a winging scapula. So, this one’s for you Colleen!
